Planted a Pink "Dwarf" variety and it grew to be 8 feet tall and equally wide. Our soil is a Black Sandy soil of ~ 5.5 Ph and we receive ~ 50 inches of rain per year.

Thanks for your kind comments, it is great to know you are finding our efforts helpful. When you get a chance, take a little while and try to rewatch this video and see if you can replicate the points that David makes... For instance, check the drainage and if unsure dig a test hole, fill it with water and and see if it drains away. Then if you haven't already, top dress with a generous layer of composted leafmould or pine bark, they have fine fibrous root systems that love the cool, moisture retentive properties of this organic rich material. If your plants look yellow and lack vigor check the pH level - it may be too high! Another thing you might want to do is solicit help from your local garden centers. Here's a link: grownbyoverdevest.com/retail-locator/ that will help you find the ones that carry our plants in MD, and if they are not run of their feet at this time of year (try to visit at quieter times... i.e. early mornings, mid-week etc.), they should be able to give you good practical local guidance.

Here's a link to our website that will give you more information on the Encore's that we ship to the garden centers in the areas where they are suitable: grownbyoverdevest.com/splant/?_sfm_genus=Azalea I didn't emphasize it in the video, but one of the other tricks in growing azaleas, is to plant ones that flower at different times.... early, medium and late flowering ones will give you extended color periods, and if you are able to work in some of the autumnal ones (like the one pictured in a Philadelphia suburb garden) then that will extend that even further. Beautiful as they are..... I tend to look at them as timely feature plants that take their turn in the spotlight along with other seasonal items, which is why it is good to compliment them with other shrubs, perennials and grasses.

@@OverdevestNurseries - Hello David - I live in South Central New Hampshire in zone 5 but not far from zone 6 which is in Northern Mass. Last year, I bought two Encore Azaleas because they are so beautiful. I re-potted them in a slightly larger pot than they arrived in and they bloomed all summer long. So in August, I decided to do an experiment. I kept on in the pot and took it indoors for the winter and the other I planted it in the ground. My house faces Southward so I planted it directly in front of the house where it would be protected from the north winds and covered it real well. This Spring, in April, I took the covering off and to my surprise it had survived the winter. It did lose some leaves but is growing them all back. So when I saw this, I bought six more Encores and am now placing them all as close to the front of the house as I can to protect them from the North winds this coming Winter. All of them are the short varieties and I am mixing some miniature Butterfly Bushes and some Catmint with them. Hopefully, I won't lose too many Encores this coming Winter.

Begin with a small area and just one or two plants, try to follow the cultural points we mention in this video (and elsewhere on our channel) and then be patient!!!! In a short time, you will be surprised how beautiful your plants and areas around your home will become. Then as your confidence grows, you can enlarge on your projects, and in no time at all you will be helping and encouraging other "would be" gardeners to enjoy the incredible beauty and satisfaction of having beautiful plants flourishing around your own little piece of paradise! if you haven't already, you might consider subscribing to our channel because there's lots more videos like this one coming.... and also, try to build a good relationship with your local garden centers - you should find that the experts there will be a tremendous resource.

It's another selection from Peter Girard's outstanding hybridization program. It posses the qualities that made this breeding line so successful...., large, full, plentiful flowers, and improved hardiness and resilience, and it flowers a little later than the main flush of evergreen azaleas, so it helps to extend the display period. What a beauty! 🥇💕This Is georgeous! I wish you to enjoy this beuty for many, many years. I didn't manage to save a few azaleas because of the lies I got from the florist. Now my first Azalea lives outside, it'sDecember, the new year and it is still blooming. I learned a lot by myself, now I still don't know, considering that it is a double Azalea from the greenhouse, probably Japonica,that's why my question is, should I cover it all winter or not at all or in strong wind, frost. My zone is 7 and can go to 8.

Thank you. It is nice to know you are finding our content helpful. If you are concerned about your plant you could try erecting a temporary "breathable" screen around it using something like hessian burlap to protect it from searing winter wind. Or alternatively lifting the plant and repotting it, so it can be overwintered indoors in a cool, frost-free and reasonably well lit room. There's a lot of truth in the old saying "horses for courses", so if you are looking to grow azaleas outdoors you would be better to start off varieties that are specifically selected for outdoor conditions. Here's a link to our website that will help you scroll through the various options: grownbyoverdevest.com/plant-search/ including the Encore types that rebloom in the Autumn to give two bursts of flowering. grownbyoverdevest.com/splant/?_sft_plant_cat=encore-azalea

Take a look at this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rnLMg5umn9uso5osi=Uyaf5-qVmsDIxtKJ (which was filmed in the same garden at about the same time) and see if that is what caught your eye? If so, this video (and others here on this channel) will provide you with a lot more information. Like the rest of our plants, we (and the experts at the various centers) select only the best performers for our region - so after you've had a chance to do your research, that's where you should be able to find them. If these are not the "purple flowers" you are inquiring about - let us know the approximate time point in the video and we will try to help you identify them. They are so beautiful. Where can one find seeds for them? I did a search for them but I only see nurseries selling the actual plants. Any idea why? Thank you.
@OverdevestNurseries6 ай бұрын
They take a long time (and are not easy) to grow from seed, and even if! And after many patient years of nurturing them, you manage to get a plant or two, you won't know what you are going to get until they flower! So, that's why trying to grow them from seed is not practical and why buying well-grown nursery plants is the best investment😉 Remember, when you buy a healthy, nicely shaped, superior performing variety; what you are really doing .... is "buying time"! It's an almost instant effect, and one that increases as the plants and grow and mature. It's actually an investment that increases in value and brings reward and satisfaction as the years pass. Especially if you plant them in a prominent place that will make your home look more inviting, should you ever decide to list it for sale. That's why realtors like to take pretty pictures of the outside of homes with nice curb appeal. It can be satisfying (and a nice challenge) to grow some plants from seed, but selected cultivars do not come through from seed and ones like these Evergreen Azaleas are better started as professionally grown specimens like you would find at our partnering garden centers: grownbyoverdevest.com/retail-locator/. They have fibrous root systems that stay near the surface, so they usually transplant well in early spring, if they ever have to be moved. But, in your case, I would suggest that you just keep "topdressing" with plenty of organic matter (examples are mentioned in the video) light layers spread annually (or twice a year) over the top of the root area. This will help keep the roots cool and moist and they will root into it. In this way, you are simulating the effects of leaf fall in nature.

Thank you, it is great to hear you are enjoying our efforts. Everything you see..... is there in reality, nothing is manipulated. As David says, "we're not making sleek, sophisticated movies, just good down to earth, practical "warts and all" information. And what's more, it is perfectly possible for you to achieve similar results too! Just check in with your local garden centers and follow David's guidance, and you can't go too far wrong. To answer your question, the plants you see in this video, range from ones that only a few years old (white ones in David's garden), to the large, mature (multi-colored) ones that are probably 25 + years old. The neat thing about these evergreen types is that they look wonderful at all ages! As you will discover when you see them at our partnering places: grownbyoverdevest.com/retail-locator/ 😉👍💚 We make sure they are healthy, well-shaped, bushy, vigorous specimens that are ready to settle in and thrive, and as you've no doubt noticed, as they grow, they just get better and better!😁 Have you subscribed to our channel? If you haven't, you might like to think about it, because once you are subscribed, each time we post a new video (which we are doing all the time), you will find that they will turn up automatically in your feed. Ive just bought a Azalea plant it was sold as a house plant could you tell me if it could be be planted outside please im in the UK.
@OverdevestNurseries8 ай бұрын
You can plant or put it outdoors temporarily, but except for very sheltered and mild locations with minimal frost, it is unlikely to survive and prosper if left outdoors in winter. These (Rhododendron simsii or sometimes called Rhododendron indicum) types are tender and intended for greenhouse forcing rather than garden performance. Our advice is that if you want to grow Azaleas outdoors, it is better to select proven performers like David profiles in our videos. We hope this helps to answer your query. Have you subscribed to our channel? If you haven't, you might like to think about it, because once you are subscribed, each time we post a new video (which we are doing all the time), they will turn up automatically in your feed. @OverdevestNurseries Жыл бұрын
We don't grow any Satsuki types because they are not hardy enough here in our Mid Atlantic and Northeastern region: So our experience is limited, that said the culture is similar to the tips and suggestions that David lays out here int his video, they enjoy the same conditions: light shade and moist, rich, well-drained soil etc. and be sure to mulch them regularly too. Hope this helps. Have you subscribed to our channel? Then when you have a chance, you might like to visit some of the partnering garden centers:grownbyoverdevest.com/retail-locator/ that carry our plants, because that's where you will might be able to see the plants for yourself. In addition, we would suggest that you think about talking to the experts at each of these centers about possibly planting a selection that flower at different times too. For instance you might like to consider early, mid-season and late flowering ones because this is a good way to spread the periods of flowering and counter any ill effects from unseasonal weather too. Finally, to ease your disappointment (perhaps), it is not unusual for a recently planted specimen to apparently flower for a short period - during the planting process. The stress of transporting plants, moving them in and out of different temperatures, light levels and moisture levels in the pot, and then in your garden, can often cause them to curtail the initial flowering period. Once they settle in and get established in its new home, we would expect the flowering to last longer, especially of you have it is a sheltered location out of the wind. So, don't worry to much about what your plant did this spring, the important thing with any new plant is to make sure it is healthy, well shaped and ready to grow in its new home. The test will come in subsequent years. Have you subscribed to our channel? If you haven't, you might like to think about it, because once you are subscribed, each time we post a new video (which we are doing all the time), you will find that they will turn up automatically in your feed. What brand of aciduc soil can I buy in the market. How can I make acidic soil? I live in Ipswich UK

It is made from the bark and by products of trees that live in lime free areas typically coniferous species Pine, Spruce etc. I am sure there are several brands in the UK and I am a bit of touch with them now, so the best thing is to ask at your local garden centers, they will be able to guide you.

Yes, many of the plants that David features in this video are growing in sunny spots, although if you look carefully, you will see some others that are in dappled shade too. If you want to grow your plants in a sunny spot, be sure to follow David's suggestions i.e. incorporate plenty of acidic organic matter during planting time, mulch and of course, water well until your plants are established and then periodically too, especially during any prolonged hot, dry periods. Hi David, wonderful video. I love azaleas. Unfortunately all of my deciduous azaleas are not blooming. They just have leaves only 😔
@OverdevestNurseries2 жыл бұрын
Huh! Wonder what's going on.... Some of the questions you would ask yourself is are they making buds and something is happening to them before they get to bloom? Are they being pruned at the wrong time? Are they getting too much shade? They are natural woodland plants but if they are not getting enough light they will stretch up and not flower well. Is the soil conditions too rich? Are they making too much rank growth and haven't reached the flowering stage yet? As you can see, there are several reasons why this might be happening, so besides scrolling through our videos, and subscribing to our channel (if you haven't already), and visiting some established azalea collections (and comparing any differences), you might think about getting a local knowledge expert (i.e. garden coach, master gardener) to take a look and see of they can diagnose what's going on.
