@BrianM-440412 ай бұрын
If you keep it under the temperatures at which flavonoids, terpenes, volatile organic compounds(vocs), and other cannabinoids evaporated or vaporize, then you're generally safe. It's always losing some throughout its life cycle, and it's constantly replacing them with new ones nightly. The key is to harvest when the production outweighs the degradation. That week when it stinks to high heaven in the mornings and at bedtime is usually early when the trichomes are mostly clear or a mix milky and clear and lasts into the middle of the milky stage. After that it begins to diminish slightly and if left long enough into the ambering stage may even become unpleasant, harsh, or bitter. The curing process plays a huge part in these processes as well as gasses are expelled, and fermentation occurs. Bacterial and fungal action also play a part in flavor. The exudates in the rhizosphere alter many functions in the plant. There are some who even believe moon phases affect the taste, chosing to harvest during the new moon or a full moon depending on their goals. Companion plants can affect expression of terpenes as well. Brix levels may affect taste and smell. Moisture levels when harvested, wet or dry trimming, etc can factor in. Tobacco is generally cured first then dried later, the opposite of how cannabis has traditionally been treated. Some Asian cultures fermented it wet as well, such as in Thailand. Slower dry and cure without mold can lead to a unique flavor. I think we have a lot to learn about drying and curing still. I typically dry at 70 and cure at about 62% rh. My peak flavor is normally at about 3 to 5 weeks of cure time after anywhere between 5 to 10 days hanging in the dark with a light breeze in the room, at 70 degrees and anywhere between 50 and 65% humidity. I'm willing to try some other methods such as fermenting, wet cure, water curing, burying, etc. I'd love to see you e explore that topic in depth. Dr Bruce, Luna all-day, Brandon rust, Jeremy Silva, Kevin jodrey, and many commercial master growers have differing ideas and questions yet to be answered but all have presented some evidence that perhaps we aren't all the way there yet and there may be a better way. I'm fine with it being dried old school, but I'm always open to ideas.
@BrianM-440412 ай бұрын
I've also dried at lower temps and actually found that at 60 I seem to lose a little smell and taste compared to the warmer dried stuff. It must never go over 72 to 75 during drying though or it loses quite a bit and becomes harsher. I've fried a batch or two over the years and it sucked. 65 degrees f is what I aim for, Incidentally, I just always seem to end up around 69 to 70 lol it works okay but I have to really regulate the temps like a hawk during summer.

If terps volatise with heat, lower temps would preserve terps. However, tricombs need light.
@BrianM-440412 ай бұрын
In order to produce trichomes the plant needs a certain amount of heat, light, water, nutrients, CO2 and oxygen. Trichomes themselves are more of an 'armor' for the cannabis plant. It's a defensive mechanism against extreme temps, drought, pests, etc. this is another good reason to Include chitin in your soils. Chitin triggers a similar response on a smaller scale, or even sometimes dramatically.
@chrisdomingo91432 ай бұрын
How would you explain this on an outdoor grow ?
@BrianM-440412 ай бұрын
@@chrisdomingo9143 the plants are able to produce trichomes and terpenes faster than they can degrade from heat and light. It's a defense system of the plant. It's also how it propagates itself. Plants grow ideally outside, the only advantage of indoor is stealth and ability to regulate the climate.

Fyi regarding drying/curing with canatrol. Highter temps/warmer air means it can hold more water vapour, thus slowing the drying process. Higher temperatures does not mean a faster drying process its more to do with water vapour in the area drying in. I do not understand why people think higher temps mean a quicker dry. that is a misconception. Thats also why canatrol has a good product because he understands that.

Genetics is the biggest factor by far. You can grow bad genetics in the most optimal environment and it'll still have minimal flavour. If you grow a plant with great terps in an ok environment, you'll still get a tasty product. Unless you know someone with great cuttings then the only way to get good genetics is pheno hunting.
