don’t forget to check for the root flare before planting! I lost a magnificent Bloodgood Mplae - after a decade of gorgeous growth… simply because the root flare was buried (a.k.a. planted too deep). It was planted correctly with the top of the container soil above soil level, but it turned out the root flare was actually much MUCH deeper in the container.
@cejanuary93783 жыл бұрын
What should you have done about that? Buried the plant higher above soil level?
@maryanne.86243 жыл бұрын
I should have removed soil until the root flare was visible. just bought two smoke trees at Lowe’s, had to remove more than 4” of soil… if I planted as-is, it would’ve died within a decade.

Something else to consider is that most Japanese maples are grafted. It can be easy to confuse the grafting fuse for the root flare, so make sure to look out for that

I know this video is old so hopefully you’ll see this question- Recently planted a blood good Japanese maple in the front yard about 11ft from the front corner of my front porch. We wanted it to be close enough to the house to sort of “frame “ it since that side of the yard is very empty, but far enough away that it would t grow into the house. My thought was that at 11ft away, even if it ever got to be 20ft wide it still would not interfere/overtake the house.. However after watching this I’m hoping we didn’t make a mistake...thoughts?

I am in south-central TX (zone 8b) and I planted a Bloodgood Japanese Maple in February this year. When I planted it, it was in afternoon shade, but I forgot to take into account that the sun moves over summer. It is in almost full sun now. The leaves were ALL green up until this week, when they all shriveled up and dried off. Why were the leaves green in full sun? Too much sun in too hot of a climate? I need to save this tree. It was planted ~2 yrs ago and has gotten 2 feet taller but has spread out like a bush versus a tree. The tree is probaby 5 feet tall but it is probably 8 feet in diameter. Should I cut the lower branches off to encourage growing up vs out? I can send you a picture if that would help. I'd appreciate any advice. Thanks, Chris

The weeping started having new foliage last week, now it’s died back.

Lost all 3 but purchased an Emperor 1 at a local nursery and still put in my protected area over from the roots left from one I had to remove. It will take a while to get all the roots out. Will be covering it completely during the winters now which will spoil the view but can't stand losing another one. It will look stunning after I transplant some peonies to flank it leaving plenty of room for the tree roots.

Alice Eads Japanese Maples do not like wet feet so you will need to create adequate drainage before planting. Talk to your local garden center to find out the best soil amendment to use with the clay. Clay alone, especially in a generally wet area, is going to choke the tree out.
