When I got this coral bark 3 years ago, it was just a stick. I watered it regularly and I swear I didn't think it would survive. But three years later, it thrived and filling out nicely. Right now, no leaves but the color of the bark is bright in the sun. Stunning.

I’ve learned if you keep the roots area shaded, by tall grasses for example, the Sango Kaku tolerates heat MUCH better

I bought one about a month ago from a nursery that had recently been hit by a tornado. Most of the plants and trees were a little worse for wear, so I got it for a steal. Only $25.00 for this tree! I'm very excited to watch it grow.

@Clint Cannon I live in zone 8b southeast US. It doesn't have the stunning red bark you would expect to see in colder climates, but it is healthy and growing well. Right now it is about 5ft in height with light green leaves. The tips of the leaves are tinged in a crimson color. It get morning sun and dappled afternoon sun/shade.

I just got one for free because the store was going to throw them away! The leaves were wilty so I drowned the heck out of it in its pot. Let's hope it survives and thrives. This tree has been on my wishlist. Today was my lucky day!

I just bought 2 of these to put in my very large flower beds. I'm very excited to have a chance to grow Japanese maples. I needed something with a green or yellow foliage, as my house is a dark red brick, and needed something to stand out, these are the ticket. Your video was super helpful, thanks for the planting tips.

Hi there I’ve moved to Vancouver WA 3 years ago from Hawaii and boy there is a lot to learn. My red bark maple’s leaves are browning at the edges and the bark is turning white more at the top. It maybe some hot summer days or am I over or under watering? I like your KZbin sight as it’s very informative. Thanks!

We got one of these cuties planted in our backyard last March (zone 7b). A frost surprised us after that and burned all the leaves. Now it’s showing black areas on it’s beautiful bark. Looks like necrosis 😭 Is it dying? What can I do to help it?
@PTA1989
@PTA1989 3 ай бұрын
Did it die? They don’t tell you they are sensitive to poorly drained areas and cold/freeze areas. If exposed they develop die back, wilt leaves, and fungus (black areas) etc.. I will never buy a coral bark again living in zone 6a.

Very helpful video. I've had my coral bark Japanese maple for 6 years and it was doing fine until this summer. Recently alot of the leaves starting dying and turning crispy where I had to cut them off. I've checked it everyday and have had to trim more and more. Its getting smaller and smaller. The last couple of days it seems to be doing better but I'm worried. I love this tree and don't know what to do. Any suggestions?

Thank you for your video. I have had a coral bark for a couple of years (in the ground). Over this summer the leaves were orange. Now that it is fall they have shriveled and died but are still attached to the stem. I believe on one branch the leaves died before they did on the rest of the tree. What's the likely problem and is there any hope for it? Thanks.

I have a new one still in a small growing pot. It has one long, wheeping type branch that is leafing out on the tip and several little leaves coming out close to base above soil level. I'm wondering about cutting off part of the long branch. It doesn't look like it will ever form a straightish trunk.
@tazmankb26
@tazmankb26 5 жыл бұрын
I would cut the long straggler. The ones coming from the base need to go for sure as they are probably coming from the original graft (the root base) not the desired tree part.

Just discovered this video. A landscaper installed one of these in a less-than-ideal spot (though it seemed like a good idea at the time), but it's absolutely flourished. Problem is: I have no idea how to prune it, now that it's about 20ft tall. A pro looked at it, but wanted twice what the tree cost to prune it. The area it's in is about 8' wide, so it's looking tall and skinny. Should I top it somewhere along the main branch? I'd like to not have to kill it.

I have an Emperor 1 in full afternoon sun in Georgia 8b and leaves look perfect . My Orange dream is in much less afternoon sun and it’s leave burn and look a bit bleached on the top of the tree . Japanese Maples are so variable in their sun tolerance . Tamukeyama and bloodgood also seem to do well in afternoon sun here .

Hello Jim you have great short videos on maples. I have been on the internet of course searching for the correct answer that I'm about to ask but the answers all over the place. I've bought a few maples this last summer and they are still in their planter boxes and very root bound. I'm in Fort Worth TX and am wondering when is the best time to plant these trees and the exact process if possible...

Hi Jim, couple questions. I planted a coral bark last spring then came a late frost here in the Charlotte area after it had budded out. Most, if not all the branches turned black and never leaved out again. I planted another one this past fall and it seemed to do well. The branches turned a very vivid pink, including the trunk. Now since we've been having all this very cold weather, and snow, some of the branches are turning dark towards the blackish color. Should I be concerned?

Question regarding pruning and health of tree. I just purchased a Japan Maple Coral Bark tree that is approx. 8 feet tall. It's leader or main central stem that goes straight up from the trunk is cut-off midway tree's height (4 to 5 ft). The tree has other lateral branches on all sides. I'm concerned that tree may not grow it's full projected length of 15 to 20ft in height. The sales person at the nursery said not to worry as other lateral branches will continue to grow up and sideways to fill the canopy. Is the sales person telling me the truth? Will the loss of leader stem drastically slow tree's growth? Please advise.
