I really love this shrub and planted one in the front yard. Deer ate it completely and it died, I thought it’s deer resistant plant but in my garden it’s not. Bought another one and planting in the backyard.

Very helpful video. Thank you, Jim, for tips, especially for pruning advice. My Globosa is round and on a long stem. After 5 years grown a lot and obstructing the path, so will use your tips in early spring to shape it back.

Thanks, Jim. Our globosa tripled in size over the last year which is awesome, but, they've overgrown a smaller space near our driveway. Thanks for the tips on how to prune them to keep them "in place".

I just planted one of these and absolutely love it. I've seen them grow larger than the little ball and they look very interesting. We nicknamed it the "cousin it" plant after seeing a large one in a catalog. Thanks for giving me more information about keeping it happy.

Is there any way you could do a video on trimming these back ? I have purchased many of them and for the most part the majority of them will be left alone. I have two on either side of the garage that need to be pruned a little . Then I have 3 under a window that will need to be kept at 3-4 ft. I love these plants

Appreciate your videos. We install a lot of drip irrigation and pop the emitters on the root ball. It sounds like you're suggesting to keep the water farther away from the plant to promote root growth. That makes sense.

I planted one last year and it was doing so well until a tree hit my house. Then the tree guys dropped a heavy branch on it and broke off a number of branches then the roofers put a tarp over it to protect it. Well that ended up burning it. I cut the burnt parts off but wonder if it will grow new branches and fill in?

Just bought one because it's so soft! Also the blueish green hue is very pretty. I'm looking forward to the gold highlights in the winter. My idea for its future is to make it a bonsai. Do you think this is feasible?

Your video was very informative. We bought 2 of them back in 2020. The problem were having to the center of our bushes are dying out. The center looks like a dead Christmas tree. I emailed my pest control company about it. I’m thinking the technician sprayed it with some kind of pesticide. Is there anything that I can help it or should I just replace them?

Thank you so much for your informative videos. We recently planted three dwarf Cryptomeria Globosa Nana. Two are beautiful, but one is turning a yellowish color and has brown foliage on the top tips and some on the bottom tips. They are all planted in the same garden, receiving the same water and sunlight, and the other two are gorgeous and green. Any ideas? Thank you!

This video was quite helpful in my gaining understanding of this plant. I planted several of these a few years ago in a newly landscaped area and they have been low maintenance and beautiful. One of my favorites. Due to an early, very deep freeze last year, almost an entire side of several of these plants turned brown and remained that way for the summer. There is new growth on the brown branches. I would live to save these, but I’m not confident in pruning away all of the brown. It would be a significant portion of the plant and might ruin the shape. Any advice?

Great video, thank you. I planted three of them below a window several years ago and they are beautiful. Unfortunately, I didn't trim them and now they are six-feet tall and blocking my window. Is it too late to give them a big shearing? Can I do it now, in early October? I'm in Central VA, a warm Zone 7.

I was given a cryptomeria globosa to bonsai. I know this is an old video and you probably won't respond, but I think it would make a beautiful bonsai. I just don't know much about them, so I was hoping you'd have some advice. Okay, you said it can take some serious pruning after it's well established, but what if I'm keeping it in a pot? I planned on pruning it back and removing some limbs but keeping it in the nursery pot for a while. I planned to repot it in late winter/early spring into a large pot (and slowly work my way down to a smaller pot over the years) then another less intense pruning and wiring after recovering from the repotting. Do you think it can handle it? It's a pretty old tree that was used for cuttings its whole life. I already cleaned up the bottom around the trunk and it seems to be doing very well after that (about 2 months ago) and has probably grown a couple inches since. It was free, but I'd rather not kill it by doing something wrong or doing something at the wrong time. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance!

I put one in a bonsai pot, with a soil mix that isn’t very acidic, i fertilize with organic in spring and fall. But now I’m worried I should have put more bark and Peet in tha mix. Should I repot in spring with something more acidic, or wait for it to show me signs of struggle. It wasn’t labeled as cryptomeria, so I treated like juniper. But maybe it will acidify with time. Just wondering how important acidic soil is for crypto’s

I love this plant and I really want one in the front of the house. Sadly, it gets mostly shade in the front of the house in Atlanta, GA. When summer comes around, it may get a little bit of sun, but not a lot. Do you think I can make it work? Will it just not grow as fast or will it die? I want a short, low-maintenance evergreen here that will not grow and block my daughter's window on the 2nd floor of the house. We had to remove the kousa dogwood because it got to big, was scratching her window and the house and was a bit out of control. I love this globes nana cryptomeria and really want to make it work in this eye sore spot in the front of my house. :)

I have 5 cryptomeria in my front bed that are about 3 years old, and I love them. They've been really healthy in part shade, until this year. Two have begun turning brown. I cleaned out the beds and realised the shrubs felt really loose. I added compost around all, fertilised with evergreen slow release stakes and added fresh pine needle mulch. Is there anything else I should do?

I am, I never post videos, but I’ll try to remember to next time I work on it. It responds well to pruning, and the branching is pretty amazing for a conifer. I put in a brown Chinese pot about 4” deep and I think 15” by 8 or 9. The winter color of foliage matches the pot, I love that little tree.

Great video! I just added one of these to my flower bed in March, it seemed to be doing well, but now the tips are all turning brown evenly around the entire plant. It gets full sun and watered with the rest of the garden every few days. Do you know why, or have any tips on how to save it. This is one of my favorite non flowering additions that I would hate to loose. Thank you in advance!
