Blueberries are my favourite fruit too 🫐. I planted a bunch of Blueberry varieties 5-6 years ago that have never done well. Finally learning how to look after them and your video is very helpful, thanks heaps!!

I yanked out some super electric blue hydrangeas last summer. I planted blueberries in the spot but they went CRAZY. So, I had to pull them and place in pots. The good thing is that now I understand that I have acidic soils and can use it to mix with coco coir for other potted plants/berries.

I just use 50% peat moss 10% pine bark and 40% native soil mix it all together and my blueberries are happy. I also use Espoma Holly tone every spring it keeps the pH low and has everything the berries need.

I appreciated your video. Thank you for your hard work. It would be nice to know what area of Texas you are in. And your mic maybe needs a new place on your person so the audio is not affected so much. I know everything costs money, so I hope your vlog grows more and more. God bless you and your business!

I really like your set up and your video. My blueberry plants are new this spring. I have two rabbiteye hybrids (the hybrid part is highbush). Pink Lemonade (the ripe berries are very pink) and Summer Sunset. These pots are side-by-side. I have six southern highbush in pots as well. I am having trouble keeping the pH down in my planting barrels. I used mature compost with equal parts peat moss. I also added a good amount of perlite and sand for drainage. Except that the compost and peat which were supposed to be acidic aren't. I'm using vinegar to adjust the pH. This doesn't work all that well, and it decomposes in a day or two with my hard water. I did use the Espoma sulphur but this can take months to be effective. Something about heat and bacteria. So I also added a fertilizer with the appropriate bacteria but I still am not getting the pH most of mine need. Most of the plants are showing growth, but the two that require the lowest pH aren't really. My zone is 9A. I bought the first bush laden with berries. The nursery person told me it would be easy to grow. Complicated is more like it. I am enjoying the care though, and the stray berry.

Good video dear...Love that set up..Id like to do it that way, but the cost of lumber now is crazy..Im battling PH, and praying the soil drops with everything ive added..I want those delicious berries to grow big and fat..lol..I have Krewers, Titans, Premiers, Georgia Giants, Tiff Blue, and Alphana ...To be honest i spent way more on the holes, than the plants, crossing my fingers

Thank you so much for this video. I'm up here at the Tx/Ok border zone 8 (they say 8 now) and I have had a very hard time with blueberries. I've successfully grown everything else....well, accept for hydrangeas...those are acidic too, I think. You explained this well. I am going to have another go at this and order more. I only had 2 plants the first time, I think I may order 4 starter plants this time. It's cheaper that way, just incase I just don't have the green thumb for BB's. :) ~Kelly

Great video! Thanks for the tips. I have a couple of questions; 1) to confirm, y'all live in Texas, right? 2) I planted my first blueberry bushes last week & it was basically just roots and 1 stem. The stems have gotten brown and the couple of leaves look to be dying. Should I be concerned?
@TXgardenandhome

Hmm that doesn’t sound like a good sign. It could be stressed from being transplanted, so I would make sure it’s getting plenty of water and sunshine and see how it does over the next week or so.

Can u please let me know what type of soil u use. I understand we need to use peat moss, pine bark and acid based fertilizer. I bought a blueberry plant and I need to plant it. Also please let me know the size of the pot we need to use. Do we need to move them inside during winter. I live in Johns Creek, Georgia .Thanks for your time!!
@TXgardenandhome
@TXgardenandhome 3 жыл бұрын
I used my native soil and mixed in the peat moss. Though I would highly recommend getting a soil sample done to make sure your soil is acidic enough when you plant. I did not need to move my plants in the winter. You can check the hardiness by looking up the plant variety online. When we had a hard freeze, I covered the plants and they were ok.

Thank you! I used a combination of peat moss and native soil with compost. I would definitely test your soil though because our natural soil isn’t acidic enough. If you are growing them in containers I’ve read that you can plant them in all peat moss if you want. I didn’t do that here because my boxes were a little big for that.

Those DIY chemistry kits really suck, the PH tester never worked for me either, just quit using them. Just got a Highbush (Legacy) and the store had a rabbiteye (Brightwell) and I thought it may not be that great in zone 6b. Had my soil tested at a university and the PH was 5.6 two years ago, just bought a big bag of Hollytone because it has sulfur in it to improve the soil. Planning to get several varieties of blueberry and some Honeyberry to go with grapes and the backyard orchard.
@TXgardenandhome
@TXgardenandhome 3 жыл бұрын
That's awesome! I'm thinking about doing grapes too. Might be a project for next spring. I'm also planning on getting the soil tested by the local ag university. I hope to get that done in the next month or so!

Peat moss is not a truly sustainable product so it's something you have to weigh the costs/benefits if you want to use! For me, I only bought a small amount and I plan to keep it in the garden for a long time.
