Great video! Hyacinth has a special place in Persian culture. It is one of the seven items that we put on our new year table spread. It is called Sonbol in Farsi and is symbolic for renewal as Iranian new year starts on first day of spring.

I received a beautiful hyacinth as a gift from a man I was dating. We lost contact on decent terms but I couldn’t believe the fragrance that filled my room when it bloomed. I have had the bulb in water since December 2022 it bloomed New Years and in November 2023 it started growing new roots. No luck past that. I’m determined to get it to bloom again. Because I love plants and because I really adored that man.

As much as I like the bulbs, I’d happily swap them for the weather you get in Southern Cali! You could always try using the fridge instead? Hi, I just found you and love this video and I watched your later one where you took them out of the dark and they are growing. Can these bulbs be stored and re-used again? If so, would someone use the same system you used by putting them in the dark and leaving them be? I'm referring to using them again and again for a house plant and not planting them outdoors. I just bought a Hyacinth in bloom and trying to learn how to care for it.
@niallgardens
@niallgardens 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Juanita! Thanks for the message. You can regrow hyacinths year after year, but unfortunately because they're prepared specifically, they're not going to perform the same again. At best, their flowers will be small. That's why I recommend planting them outdoors. However, if you want to try them again next year I would make sure they're planted in compost so that they get nutrition, give them some plant food while they've got green growth, and then when they die back, I'd move the pot into a cool dark dry spot until the autumn. Hope that helps!

I'd just refresh it every week or so, just to keep it fresh

How much sunlight is too much or too little?

For indoor bulbs, they're not too fussy - so I would say regular indoor light but fairly close to a window should work perfectly.

Why do they flowers inside the leaves for me? The flower doesn’t rise above the leaves? Is it because no dark time?
@niallgardens

Yeah it sounds to me like they needed the few weeks in the dark and cool first 👍

It's actually a small banana plant that was given to us by a friend! Thought it looked cute in the pot!

such a controversial choice, id be one of those people cautious about Hyacinths, I think the scent can be a bit overwhelming . And there is something of the granny about them. (no offence to grannys, some of my best friends are grannys) but maybe ill have a look at them this year , find an unusual variety. After all it was only a few years ago that no one really like dahlias and hydrangeas , and now everyone loves them.

It is controversial isn’t it?!! That’s why I chose it... for me, they’re a total guilty pleasure plant, like cheesy pop music! 😂 But I think if you get a classy looking variety and plant it in a really nice way they can still be a showstopper. You make a very good point of Dahlias and Hydrangeas, trends come and go don’t they...

Oh yeah it sure is! It’s an offshoot of a much larger one and we were given it by a friend who grows quite a few tropical plants. It’s growing SO fast, like SO fast! I absolutely love it!

How to get real hyacinth bulbs?
@niallgardens
@niallgardens 2 жыл бұрын
Depends on where you live and at what time of the year, but my immediate thought would be garden centres and online bulb suppliers
