I’m in San Antonio and larkspur is a MUST here... along with poppies! I’m turning my backyard into a native wildflower garden. I’m also putting in some raised beds for veggies. I just turned 74, yesterday! I used to have a landscaping company but age has slowed me down. So I’m reconfiguring things into bite sized sections that I can handle with limited help. I find your videos most inspirational! Just found them this morning! Happy birthday to me! Lol 🎉🎊🎉

I just discovered them recently - your video is beautiful ! I got the seeds as I love anything that I can just sow into the ground especially early spring . I’m in zone 6b and it’s April 20 so I just sow them now. My area is a lot cooler too so hopefully they will germinate and grow !

I have Larkspur in my pollinator garden where there is almost no soil and more little pebbles. Last year some came out and I cannot remember that I put seeds in, maybe they came from a wildflower pack that you can get in a Dollar Store and this year I had so much in my garden that it was unbelievable, I guess they are self-seeding and the most intense beautiful purple flowers. Thanks for letting us know they are poisoning. I have to get more seeds with different colors, maybe I will put some compost in this autumn. BTW I live in Ohio and we have the same climate. Last winter we had such a bad cold coming thru over Christmastime and I thought most of my flowers will be dead. Thanks so much for your video :)

when I cold stratify, I wet a paper towel, fold it like a book, sandwich the seeds in the middle and place the whole thing in a ziploc sandwich bag in the fridge. A week later and the seeds are germinated, so that may be a good tip to get earlier germination. Planting the seeds out today in MA and probably some a bit later. experimenting with fall seeding timing zone 6b

That was a great video with good discussion. I am in Zone 8 Virginia Beach area. I put my larkspar in the refrig in a damp paper towel probably 3 months ago. Forgot about it!!! Took it out today 12/29 and the seeds have sprouted. Help what should I do now??? We have mild winters - current daytime temp is 50-60 until about February. Might get a few 20 days then March brings seasonal spring. weather.

Hey there it seems I might have missed the boat with sowing these seeds now in March in New Jersey. How long do they flower for before they head to seed?
@TONYAwiththeflowers4 жыл бұрын
I've seen some people say they'll flower all season if you keep them deadheaded, but I've never had that happen. I can usually keep them going about 4-6 weeks before they start looking rough. As for sowing, there still may be time to direct sow. It may work in your garden. There really is a lot of trial and error with these hardy annual flowers. Good luck!

Do you use netting to support them up? And would you recommend using weed Barrier and burning holes to put them in?
@TONYAwiththeflowers4 жыл бұрын
In my experience, they don't need any netting. I also direct sow them without weed barrier. They bloom so early in the season, I haven't noticed very much competition from weeds. Hope that helps.

Can you plant them in late summer for fall blooms in central Ky (I know you'd be familiar with that climate!) LOL
@TONYAwiththeflowers4 жыл бұрын
I've let them self-seed in late summer before, and have never had the seeds actually germinate until the weather cools. By then, they go ahead and overwinter and bloom in the spring. If it's possible, my best guess would be to make sure to cold stratify the seeds before planting. Sorry I couldnt help!

I bought a pack of pelleted delphinium last year from local BIG BOX that I tried twice to germinate but no luck so far, so this Tues I saw the new Ferry Morse display in same BIG BOX store and bought the larkspur pack. Just put a flat of 70 seeds in fridge and will hope they have life. Johnny's says keep for 7 days in fridge then germinate at 55-65 for 2-3 weeks. I hope I have enough cool weather left for them to bloom in AL, near FL border 8B. I thought for most cold stratifying, you need the seed moist but this video you implied you put seed pack in dry?? I have shaded back porch where I can keep temp cool but 3-5 degrees above ambiant temp or put flat inside on floor right next to outside door if outside gets too cold. Do you think pelleted seed helps or hurts germination? If the delphinium was as big as the larkspur seed, it was big enough not to need a pellet imo!
@TONYAwiththeflowers4 жыл бұрын
Both of those seem to really love cool temperatures. I always refrigerate my larkspur seeds in the packet dry and then direct sow in fall. Also, germination time is very long. I've found that it can take over a month. Good luck!

Can you confirm (not sure if I misunderstood): you sow in September and they germinate that fall? Or they stay dormant until spring? I'm in zone 5 so I would probably want to make sure they don't germinate before winter. Thanks!

They should germinate and establish a root system, overwinter and should grow stronger in early spring

That sounds so cold! If you live somewhere that gets a lot of snow cover, that might really help protect hardy annual plants. Often mine really struggle because we rarely get snow, just cold and rain.

If they are winter-sowed flowers, why do the seed companies send them to the big box stores for display in February?? I bought a packet, only to find out its too late to plant them, for best results 😭😭
@TONYAwiththeflowers4 жыл бұрын
My local store always sells seeds at the wrong planting times. Very frustrating!Sowing will depend where you live. If your summer is mild, they may do well direct sowed as soon as soil can be worked. Here in my zone, I have to direct sow in the fall because its gets hot so fast and plants don't have time to establish. I would go ahead and sow them as early as possible. They may still do well. Good luck!
