I disagree with frequent hair trims. That's why my hair wasn't getting longer! I take excellent care of my hair, get it trimmed about once every 6-9 months, and it's now at my waist. I bought into the 6-8 week trim schedule, which simply cut off almost all the growth.
@am11566 ай бұрын
This is so true. Not until covid when I had to resort to cutting my own hair (twice and so much easier than I thought) did it finally reach the length I desired.

Hair grows about a half a inch a month if you go cut a inch or two every few months your not growing your hair one hair dresser said every 6 to 8 months is just fine.
@rosamoreno47946 ай бұрын
I get a “micro” trim every 6-8 weeks and my hair is down to my waist, it maintains that length. Regular hair trims maintain the hair youthful and all one color, again making my hair look youthful. I am 47, have been getting micro trims since I was like 30, consistently. I made that a priority along with my facials. Everyone flosses their new cars (debt), I floss my skin and hair.
@am11566 ай бұрын

I’ve never really had issues with hair growth per se, but my hair used to get super scraggly after a certain length until I started sleeping in a silk bonnet at night. It’s really helped me reduce friction as I sleep and my hair is able to stay healthy while growing long. I cut it about 2 times a year to refresh my cut and it’s been enough. I do use heat almost every time I wash it, but I’m washing at most 1 or 2 times a week and I always use heat protectant. I used to only oil my hair after I washed it, but now I’ve started oiling my hair on my non-wash days and it’s made a world of difference for my 2A hair that’s needed a lot more moisture than I’ve given it my whole life because I treated it like straight hair. If you find that the oil is too heavy, try putting the tiniest bit in your palm and rubbing it all over your hands like you’re lathering soap (including in between your fingers and back of your hand) before applying to your hair - that seems to work for me. I got an oil that every review said was too heavy but I loved the smell so wanted to try making it work anyway and that method does work for me 😂

I have a really good hair product recommendation for you, Dr. Ellis! It's called La'dor Perfect Hair Fill Up. It's specifically for damaged (bleached hair). I don't have bleached hair but I do use Nizoral because it's been recommended by other derms because something to do with testosterone on the scalp making the hair growth not come out as vellus hairs or thinner hair. That makes my hair feel damaged. It does take up time. You could check your email while waiting. You apply it after shampooing. You mix equal parts the ampoule and cold water. Mix it together and it forms a white cream. It's a generous amount. You put it all over your hair then I put it up in a clip and wear a shower cap. You're supposed to wait 15-20 minutes. I do 16 minutes. Then thoroughly rinse it out. I still use my regular conditioner because it works so well. The La'dor product really makes your hair feel so soft and luscious and strong! You'll love it!

Scalp massage is so important! It stimulates blood circulation which (no surprise!) stimulates hair growth! I'd suggest this massage during your conditioning time, so that your fingers slide, thus not creating friction and causing damage. Frequent trims are a BIG NO!!! If hair grows an average of 1/2 inch per month, you'll be constantly cutting off everything you grow! If you maintain your hair, you shouldn't need cuts that often! I'd also recommend a hair bonnet for sleep and/or a silk or satin pillowcase! This also eliminates friction on your strands while you sleep. Tight hairstyles are also a big no...loose, non-restrictive styles are a great way to be kind to your hair. Also, I'd suggest looking into some heatless styling tools. I've been having a blast with them, and my hair looks AMAZING with them, and the curls really LAST! 🙂

Dr Sam Ellis I really enjoy your videos and have already taken advantage of a lot of your advice and suggestions. However, there is something that really confuses me a lot, about most of the hair products you recommend that contain various non-water soluble silicones. These silicones (such as Dimethicone) seal the hair in such a way that they don't allow new nutrients to enter and as a result the hair dries out and breaks. That's what I read everywhere, it makes sense and I've experienced it myself. The same thing happens with petrol derivatives. I have chemically treated hair with keratin straightening and bleaching, so more than anyone else I need shampoos that aren't too aggressive and don't contain surfactants that won’t clean these products out of my hair, but even in other cases I think they should be avoided. I'd like to know your opinion on the subject.
@porcupine7834 ай бұрын
Dr Ellis, I have a question that I’ve looked all over for answers to but I can’t find anything. Can you please explain how it is that changes at the level of the hair follicle can cause changes to the middle and ends of the hair that are already gown out prior to the inciting event that causes follicular change (ex medication addition, hormone change)? I can’t understand how the ends of long hair can be changed by something happening at the follicle so far away. Thank you so much!
@WarmestComputer4 ай бұрын
That's a great question and the reason you can't find it is because the middle and ends of your hair are functionally dead. You can coat them with things to make them shinier, protect from heat damage, etc. But you're not doing anything to the inside. Products that say they make your hair thicker usually just contain an ingredient like silicone that adds bulk or expands with heat.... it's not actually changing your hair. Also, things that make your hair stronger... only if we're talking about new growth...and that takes a long time. People still buy into the myth that shaving makes hair grow back thicker because they don't understand that the ends aren't living anymore. In that case, it doesn't grow back thicker... it's that you took a sharp edge (from a razor) and added a nifty new edge to the end of the hair. That will make it feel different when you run your hands over the area. Long story short, most products are for giving you a temporary change (like makeup). Anything for actual change will take the time it takes for your hair to grow (months/years).
@porcupine7834 ай бұрын
@@WarmestComputer in that case why do people experience hair texture changes at the mids and ends of their hair during pregnancy? They don’t grow 8 plus inches of hair during that time to have all of the hair affected yet it is.
@WarmestComputer4 ай бұрын
@@porcupine783 The ones that I'm aware of don't actually have to do with the hair itself changing internally. Much like the often repeated shaving myth, that's a old wives tale. Instead it has to do with more, or sometimes less, oil production at the scalp/follicle. More oil can make hair seem more limp, finer, smoother. As always, the oil from your scalp travels down the outside of the strands of your hair when you touch it, brush it, etc. If hormone changes leave less oil at the scalp, it can result in the hair cuticle (the outside) feeling coarser, drier, more rigid because the little scales aren't smoothed down enough by the oil coating it. Look up a picture of the cuticle of a hair stand and you'll see what I mean by "scales"... they can be smoothed down or frayed out. Also, lots of women think their hair gets thicker, but it's not the strands getting thicker. It's actually a combination of losing LESS hair and the fact that for many pregnant women their hair grows faster than a 1/2 inch per month. Note that most of these changes refer to the OUTSIDE texture of the hair that is affected by things coming in contact with it, not internal changes to a living hair strand. Just like your nails and your nail bed, changes past your hair follicle have to do with what you're doing EXTERNALLY to it because it's not really alive after the nail bed/follicle.

@@porcupine783 There two ways you can talk about hair texture. There's hair that comes out of the root differently because it was created differently in the follicle. Then there's what you're talking about, which comes from the outside cuticle of the hair being affected by external factors, as opposed to changes from the inside out. First, a lot of pregnant women refer to their hair getting fuller/ thicker, but it's not the strands changing. Their hair is actually falling out less and growing faster than 1/2 inch per month. In terms of outside texture, the change is usually coming from more or less oil from the scalp. If your hormones are creating more scalp oil, hair may seem more fine, limp, etc. If less oil, the scales of the hair's cuticle are likely not to be smoothed down. Hair might feel drier, stiffer, coarser. Oil from your scalp travels down the cuticle usually from touching it, brushing it, etc. This is why curly hair can be so dry at the ends... you can't brush it. So, long story short, the changes aren't coming from inside a living hair strand. It's confusing they way the word "texture" is used. Most people don't realize there are two different meanings. We also talk about how "healthy" someone's hair is...but that's more about the oil, how is the outside cuticle doing, and are there split ends. Again, none of it having to do with a living strand.

It's the right nutrition and supplements that restore and keep great hair. A healthier body producing a healthy baby starts off life with good hair. But, maintaining it with the right foods and supplements is the key to success.

Have beautiful, healthy gray hair, but it has turned frizzy. Nothing seems to work and conditioners seem to make it more fluffy and frizzy. I’ve turned to a 50-50 vinegar water rinse. It seems to be clarifying my hair and taming down the frizz. Is that OK for a long-term use?

This is just my personal experience so far. I have started Perfectil original hair skin & nails by vitabiotics and I haven’t noticed any adverse reaction to my acne prone skin.. I’m 3 weeks in so think this is long enough to tell if it would break me out or not. But this brand in general have lots of different types of supplements all geared toward either your hair concerns/skin etc. worth a google for sure. ❤

I would be content with a healthy scalp as in my younger times. Im 55 and switch to a fragrance free shampoo . I dont wash my hair everyday yet still feel an itchy scalp , see some flakes and some pimples after I wash my scalp . I have tried free and clear shampoo, Whole Foods brand fragrance free shampoo and still my scalp itches , some pimples and flakes . some flakes.
@deannad91054 ай бұрын
If you need fragrance-free, you may want to try Vanicream Shampoo and Conditioner (from the makers of Vanicream lotions). They have a regular shampoo and two different kinds of shampoo for flakiness. I would suggest asking your doctor and/or hairstylist which type of ingredient would help your scalp type, since itchiness and flaking can be caused by different issues.

I have thinning on the top of my head. My hair used to be so gorgeous and now I have to cover it with toppers. I tried hair club (to the tune of $5k) which was BS. They wanted to shave my head and paste on cheap hair. Is there anything I can do to regrow my hair. It seems to have started when I had a hysterectomy with removal of my ovaries. Would HRT help?
@evelyn40506 ай бұрын
Hi, nurse here! HRT would likely help with hair growth…but it’s so good for so many other things! Estrogen is cardio-protective, protects your muscles, bones and brain. Ideally, you want to get on HRT within 10 years of menopause. The sooner the better! One more thing…the big myth is that HRT causes breast cancer. This has been debunked. Hope this answer helped.

Can you layer a oil and a mask on the lengths? Can I put rose mary oil in them and a rice protein mask right after to get both benefits?
@moonlightgaming_46 ай бұрын
Hair masks penetrate and work most effectively on clean hair, like right after shampooing in the shower or if you have dry ends use protein based masks 3 times or less or more in a month for any hair type and use a protein moisture balanced mask for dry ends only before showering.. apply a generous layer and brush through gently and cover it with a shower cap for 30 minutes and shampoo and rinse after.
