I disagree with asking hair stylists for advice when you’re older. Every stylist I have visited has always wanted to cut my hair really short. In my opinion, short hair can make many people look older, while longer hair tends to make the face appear younger. Additionally, I have curly hair, and when it’s longer, it is easier to care for because it pulls down the curls. Hair stylists often suggest cutting hair short, even if it doesn’t suit a person’s age or face shape.

I agree with you 💯 percent. I'm 37 and I will be 38 on November 19 and hair stylists always want to cut my hair very short. I like my hair to be shoulder length..

My Grandma was a beautician. It's important to go somewhere where the entire crew does a better cut and style. I try to pick someone that has my hair type, or is a senior stylist I usually find that these types of people will cut my thick wavy to curly hair best. Then as I am sitting there I watch and take note of other stylists because sometimes you can find a good stylist by watching. I feel like my method is less risky and I walk away happy. I also like to pick styles that fit my face shape and I bring in pictures from Pinterest or screen shots from my phone. While my hair is thicker, its not going ever look exactly like the picture it helps.

And I agree this super short styles do age people. I feel like people from the 80' and 90's look older than today just because of how hair was cut and styled.

Hi Doctor Ellis. First, I love your content! Second, I have a request. Is it possible that you could do a series or even a single long-form video about how to treat your skin, nails, hair, etc. to heal the after effects of cancer treatments? My mom is a stage 4 breast cancer survivor, and cancer stole not just her breasts, but her healthy skin, her red hair (it lost all of its pigment during treatment), her healthy nails, and even her teeth (which I know is not something you can help with). Her skin is constantly dried out. Some of her toenails fell off during treatment. They have since grown back, but have become more brittle. Her hair is struggling as well with dryness. For extra context in case it helps, she is in her late 60s and lives in the southeastern US, so she lives in a warm and humid climate. She's been cancer-free for around 5 years, give or take, but this is still a struggle. I'm not certain this is something you could help with in its entirety due to you not being an oncologist, but I would imagine you could offer some help with this because the skin itself is your specialty and I'm sure you've seen many a cancer survivor who has had skin struggles after treatment. Thank you! I'm so glad I found your channel a few weeks ago!

What a beautiful bonding experience you have been able to share with your mom. I helped my father transition over from breast cancer. Yes, men also get breast cancer as I'm sure you're well aware. I weirdly just found this video in my feed. No coincidences. Do not rule out a really great acupuncturist. Holistic approaches are good in a sense to get to the root cause so the cancer does not come back and/or for yourself. We already know breast cancer can be a family thing. Until I actually actually went to a reputable acupuncturist, which aren't as expensive as ppl may think and some insurance providers cover now, is a serious life changer. Do you research. You got this. God Bless you & your mother from Florida. 🪷

I assume your mother is not taking HRT? Most oncologists are *extremely* risk-averse and so usually will say a hard no to HRT post BC, not least because most haven't been trained in HRT and get their information about it from the media along with the rest of us and unfortunatley there was a flawed study that came out 20 years ago and got a tonne of press that also misrepresented the results and so we all became extremely anti-HRT which has now doubt led to many more preventable deaths sadly. It is worth considering, that if your mother is 60 now and has been cancer free for 5 years, then she most likely went into Menopause at the same time as she was dealing with BC, which must have been a horrendous experience for her. However, this means that some of what she is experiencing now is also probably due to the hormone deficiency of Menopause and not just the insult to her body from the cancer treatments. It is important to know that the studies show that HRT does not *cause* Breast Cancer and that rather than giving BC survivors a hard no to HRT, they really they should have their own risk/benefit ratio calculated and make a truly informed decision. More and more women are now starting to ask themselves what did they survive BC for if they are just going to suffer a lower quality of life by avoiding HRT. There is a book called Estrogen Matters by Avrum Bluming (look for the most recent edition) who is a Medical Oncologist and he goes into the science behind HRT and BC and why (O)Estrogen is so important to us as we age, so I would advise both of you reading that book. I would also look online for women who have survived BC who chose to take HRT afterwards and they share their thoughts and experience with it. If your mother has had what sounds like a double, total mastectomy, then her risk ratio would be negligible in my limited understanding. Anyway, I hope this helps somewhat.

Dear Dr Sam, if you read this, and have time, I would be most grateful if you could answer a questions please? Do you think that it is safe to put an eyelash growth (non hormone) enhancer on ones temples please? I have been doing it and there is some growth in my receding area. I have been watching a KZbinr called Lab Muffin (she is a chemist) and she recommended hair care that has a high concentration of amodimethicone. I cannot believe the improvement in my hair since I have done this. I have thin, fine, wavy, dyed post menopausal hair that constantly knotted. Not any more, my hair is like silk now and not weighted down. Paul Mitchell does a leave in called Super Strong and Keratase has an excellent range too. My budget is tight but I'm going to see a dermatologist about my hair loss and thank you for always suggesting this. I think your advice is so helpful and you come across as such a funny, warm and normal person.

My derm says frequency is individual. I learned this the hard way. I started following the trend of washing less (2-ish times per week) and I now have seborrheic dermatitis which is very hard to get rid of and is causing a lot of shedding. I’m 54, my hair is drier and more brittle, but my scalp is not dry. So infrequent washing was the worst thing for me. She says I should wash every day. Do the types of hair tools you use make a difference? I’m considering purchasing the T3 Aire for styling because I heard that it’s gentler on the hair. But, does it really matter?

Hi and I hate that my hair is thinning. I had fuller hair in my younger years and am trying not to get jealous of other women with thick hair. What do you suggest to a 62 year old lady? Waiting to find out my thyroid blood test.

Good question -- I read recently in the NYT about how truly dangerous and harmful those products are, so I mentioned it to some of my colleagues.

I'm 46 and noticed thinning on the crown but it's still thick in the back. I've just recently started Nutrafol but no results yet. I've also tried minoxidil but hate the way it's makes my hair feel and look: dull, sticky, flat and greasy. Any additional topical or application suggestions?

So depressed. I always had incredibly thick hair. Over pandemic I let it grow out long and gray. It now it is shedding. It’s still big hair but half of what it was . The gray hair is also very dry and parts are fuzzy (new to me). Hair dresser says it’s thinning and not one of the balding problems. Probably from medication I take for an autoimmune disease. My derm retired so I’ve just been paying a lot for Aveda Invati. I want something that works- brings my hair back and not so dry and fuzzy. I love my gray but I think it has a yellow tinge to it. Suggestions until I get a new dermatologist? Please? Wish you did telehealth 🤓

Try using a purple shampoo once a week to help with the yellow tinge. These really help, but careful not to use every time you shampoo or your hair can take on a violet hue.

It’s a shame society we cannot embrace grey hair as it is very beautiful and liberating NOT to colour your hair.

I have red hair and I re dye my hair periodically, of course I have to. I tried Olaplex shampoo and conditioner last month, it was awful, it contributed to shedding. Something that I just remembered, I use that Mielle serum (mint + tea tree oil) for roots? In the Winter time + Rogaine for Women in my roots.

I decided to go grey four years ago at 40 and I get compliments all the time. No one has ever said it ages me, just that I look too young to be grey😂. I got a severe case of Mono at 22 and started going grey immediately after.

Grey blending with a demi permanent color is a good way to transition to all over grey. I think grey is beautiful but there is an awkward phase to be sure.

I would love an explanation of how my stick-straight hair went curly after I had a child over 30 years ago. I now have very curly hair but I just don't get it. I am lucky that I can in fact have curly or straight hair now but would love to know what happened???

From people I have known that used wigs, you really need to be a wig stylist to look good in a wig. You can’t just put it on your head and expect it to look real. I had a friend that worked in theater. I swear I could have given him a Bozo the Clown wig and he could make it look natural and beautiful. I could take a real hair wig and make it look like a mop. I would need my own personal on call stylist!

Does the oral form of Minoxidil cause hair growth everywhere?

Most unexpected thing that occurred with my hair was when my super straight hair became wavy when I was well into being peri menopausal. Unfortunately it wasn’t everywhere - went from back third of right side of my head, around the back to halfway around the left side. Had a little hair loss on the right above the temple and use minoxidil for that. (Tried Vegamour for 9+ months before that & it did absolutely nothing.)

Derma e has a hair oil that's supposed to be good. And yes a lot of people go blonde when they get older because they've been told to go lighter but at least one stylist has said they just mean bumping up maybe one tone from your natural hair color. Wigs are good these days and your hair stylist can style them for you.

One of the problems that some women have with Menopause and hair loss is that some women will have an excess of Testosterone if they don't start supplementing with HRT, they may feel great in a lot of senses as these are the women who get an increased libido, less risk averse etc but they start to get really thin on top. Nothing replaces lost hormones except HRT, and it has so many benefits besides improving our skin and hair as we age, it has multiple protective effects against early death from all causes, protects against a number of different cancers, heart disease, dementia and osteoporosis, plus it increase our quality of life as we age, so we can literally age gracefully rather than creakily. I would also add that in my experience, low iron levels have always made my hair dry and frizzy looking, so get your levels checked by your GP and start taking a supplement asap if your levels are low, but remember that it can take several months for improvements to be seen in your hair due to the lenght of time it takes for our hair to grow and also for the different hair phases. This also means that if your hair starts to look bad or fall out now, it may be as a result of something that changed 6 months or more ago.

I'm concerned about my scalp health But.... I perm and color my hair and am worried that these scalp products will either strip color or damage my curls.... thoughts? I am 55 and my hair is surprisingly healthy. I did get the spray from Virtue that you recommended for hair loss and have been using for about 3 weeks but don't see and growth yet. I am also worried that my silk bonnet is rubbing on my hair line at night causing breakage or hair loss. My problem is hair loss in the widows peak , def hereditary.
