Love seeing you enjoying this plant we love to grow in the south of the US. 🙂 There are many varieties of okra and they aren't all picked at a few inches. Some aren't ready to be harvested until they are 5 inches or so. Okra is great fried and it's good for diabetic. You can get the health benefits out of it as a tea too. There are a few varieties that stay short or you can top the plant so it doesn't get too tall to harvest from.

Thanks for the great info! I'm going to give this a go as I like to cook gumbo and it's a key ingredient I usually miss out because I don't have it. I've grown ground cherry (Physalis) for first time this year and am impressed with how easy it is and the yield. I'm growing it in my potting shed as I don't have a sheltered spot but I think it would grow well outside further south.

Okra is native to Africa and (some say,) Asia. It is used widely in west Africa (particularly Nigeria) to make okra soup and is a staple crop. It was transported to the southern USA and the Carribbean during the Atlantic Slave Trade. It is, as you say, highly nutritious but the pods must be harvested while immature. They are totally inedible otherwise and I fear those two are way too mature to eat. In my opinion they would have been better left to collect seeds from for next year. I usually struggle to grow them in the UK but in west Africa they are dead easy. Looking forward to trying again this season.

Indeed. They were to tough, I planned on making the video a few days before I did but didn't have the time so by the time I filmed they were too big. This variety Super bhindi is great.

you're lucky. I grew okra for the first time this year, but I didn't get a good yield. I am finally getting a few fruit. They're in the ground and supposed to get to 4-6 feet tall and should have because it went to 108 degrees Fahrenheit here this summer. Unfortunately, my plants were little, tho (about a foot high). I'm thinking maybe I didn't turn the soil enough and it was compacted... Because there is no other reason I can think that they were stunted. I watered twice a week. I fed them. they were planted in compost and took off really well.... Cant figure them out.... Same with my watermelons. They took off well but as soon as fruit got about golfball size, they died. Any suggestions for next year?

What variety did you grow? Can you get any Super bhindi?
@jessicapayne2211
@jessicapayne2211 2 жыл бұрын
@@homegardens7682 It seems that it's only available in the UK. I think that might be because it might have a different name here in the US. It looks like the Super Bhindi variety is Abelmoschus esculentus. Is that true? If so, then it's called "Giant Cow Horn" in the US. The varieties I tried to grow were Clemson Spineless (which is a standard okra here, I think) and Jambalaya (which are supposed to be more tender than Clemson). I will try the Super Bhnidi/Cow Horn and a couple of others.... like maybe Burgundy, Sheetal or Star of David.
@Africa1000
@Africa1000 Жыл бұрын
My okra has done superbly well this year (Summer 2022). I've grown Clemson Spineless but next time try Baby Bubba (the dwarf bush variety). I've been watering little and often ( daily or twice daily in the extreme heat we've been getting) once the soil dries out. It definitely wants some time in dry soil before watering.

In the ground or in a pot, as long as it's a cool climate get the okra plants indoor, under a polytunnel or in a greenhouse. They love heat and refuse to grow in chilly weather
