Thanks for this video. I hadn't seen these paperwhites before. I just ordered some to grow in a basket under my front porch. Looking forward to some lovely flowers at Christmas.

Those are going to look pretty! I don't have much luck with bulbs. Most likely because that they weren't stored properly prior to getting them. Thanks for sharing!

Sorry to hear that! I'd agree that it's most likely not your fault, but what's happened to them before you've got them... I know that's happened to me before with seeds 👍

Super cute flowers! You mentioned they were frost hardy, what kind of times would they flower if you planted them outside?

Yeah you absolutely can! 👍 My plan is that I'll let these flower indoors this winter, then store them for planting out in the garden next Autumn

Hi Niall, love the start of this video beautiful Autumn colours. Love your ideas for planting the narcissi bulbs, as you say they do get quite floppy. It will be interesting to see if the alcohol works.

First, love the video, it was really helpful. I've been growing my paperwhites since October and they've bloomed already, but what happens after? Will they bloom again? Thanks!
@niallgardens3 жыл бұрын
Thanks very much, glad it was useful! So, because the bulbs are specially prepared to bloom indoors, it’s really unlikely that they’d ever bloom indoors again... they’re a bit of an indoors one-shot! However, you can plant them out into the garden and they’ll grow year after year just like a regular daffodil! I’d expect the flowers to be smaller and less prolific. Treat yourself to some new ones each year for indoors, and then you’ll slowly build a collection outside as well!

Niall, for the bulbs planted in the compost, how much should you water them and how do you control the watering?
@niallgardens3 жыл бұрын
I would just give them a little water to keep the soil gently moist but not wet. I'd err on the side of the soil being a little too dry than too wet.

If using the alcohol method, can you water with alcohol when giving them their first drink after planting? Or would you suggest watering as normal and using alcohol on the next watering? Loving the videos! ☺️
@niallgardens3 жыл бұрын
Oh! I think you'll be fine to go with the alcohol mix from the start. Otherwise, I'd start watering with the alcohol included once you see roots developing.
@kathrynreeves5876 Жыл бұрын
Wait until the flower bud is just out of the bulb before watering with dilute alcohol.
@petermiller54513 жыл бұрын
A good informative video, but I’m wondering about aftercare. Can these bulbs be stored and used in the same way year after year?
@niallgardens3 жыл бұрын
They can be reused year after year, but not indoors. Really they're only prepped to flower like that one time indoors. Instead, once they're finished, I'd plant them in the garden and they should grow again. Hope this helps!

Another great video 😁. Whats the name of the plant you have in front of you. In the middle of your shot? I have one but don't know what it is. Is it a trailing plant? Because mine has grown very long and I dont know what to do with it. Thank you x
@niallgardens4 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much Jenny! Chuffed that you liked it. The plant is a Maranta and you're absolutely right that as it grows, it trails. Mine was starting to look a bit tired a few years ago, so I chopped it into bits and rooted the cuttings in a little jar of water. It roots super-easy and then I planted all of the cuttings (about 7 of them) into the same pot to make a nice dense clump. If you've taken cuttings before, just treat the maranta the same... cut just below a leaf node and place in water... I'm sure you'll have success!
@penky19974 жыл бұрын
@@niallgardens Thank you so much for that, I will give it a go and see if I can form a nice dense hanging basket 😁 x
