I've just stumbled across your channel and have watched five videos now, and now have the confidence to at least start growing my favorite vegetables in the back yard. Thank you for making it so easy and not lots of long winded talking, just all the action we need to see to get started. I have just subbed too.

@TowardGarden2 жыл бұрын
I use 3-4-4 organic fertilizer (Garden-tone). Any fertilizer either balanced NPK such as 5-5-5, or high in PK like 5-10-10 would work. Avoid high nitrogen fertilizers. I hope this helps and thank you so much for your comment!

Hello. How are you?...Thanks for another awesome Video. You can grow potatoes in any kind of weather?
@TowardGarden2 жыл бұрын
Hello there! The ideal soil temperature range for planting potatoes is 45-50 F (7-10 C). After planting, the ideal temperatures for growth are 65-80 F (18-26 C) during the day and 55-65 (12-18 C) F at night. I hope this helps and thank you so much for your comment!

How high should I let the green grow before I put more soil on it? And how much do I leave above the dirt
@TowardGarden Жыл бұрын
You can start when plants have 3-4 sets of leaves, usually about 4 in tall. Cover about half of the leaves (2"). Hope this helps and happy growing.

Great point. I am trying to add these detail in my videos more. For the potatoes, my preferred fertilizer is Gardentone 3-4-4 fertilizer. When in doubt, any tomato fertilizer available will work too. Thank you very much for your comment!

@@TowardGarden I've failed in the past because I used nitrogen dominant fertilizer and got big green foliage and tiny marble size potatoes. As Katrina Garland says the "KIND of fertilizer" is an important note to add. That said, thank you for the great video.

Can you reuse the soil to plant more potatoes once one lot is harvested?
@TowardGarden2 жыл бұрын
I always try to reuse my potting soil. Once you harvest your vegetable (potatoes too), remove old roots from the soil and add fresh compost (composted manure, garden compost,...) and general purpose organic fertilizer and you have a new potting soil. A ratio of 1/3 to 1/2 fresh compost to the mix will work. Thanks for visiting!
@Chandrika-222 жыл бұрын
So how any weeks did this take altogether? Did you drill holes in the buckets? Thanks!

@@TowardGarden amazing Thats so helpful. I saw you mixed garden soil with peat. Do you think I can use my 100% peat compost mixed with fertiliser and pertile or I have to use soil with it as well? I don’t have any ready soil I could use, If I have to mix it do you have any recommendations what can I buy? I was thinking of any “top soil” I can get in B&Q etc. or should I get potting soil? Or only compost will work? Sorry about questions I am very very new to my allotment x

@gosiak7291 if you don't have compost, bagged organic garden soil or bagged soil amend works great. I have a other video with the details kzbin.info/www/bejne/jpXMap6teqaSjpIsi=Q8XMC1W_7JyG7LLM . Thank you.

Do you just use a potato to start with? Like a potato that’s already started sprouting?

I grew potatoes once and they turned out to be soggy little things..no good. Maybe watering issue? How often would you water in these 5 gal buckets?
@TowardGarden2 жыл бұрын
Soggy potatoes are probably due to overwatering or lack of drainage. Make sure the container or bucket has multiple holes for drainage and do not overwater the plants. I usually water every other day but it depends on the weather. You want to keep soil moist but not soggy. I hope this helps and thank you for visiting.

Do I have to buy seed potatoes or will supermarket potatoes do?
@TowardGarden2 жыл бұрын
Technically you can grow potatoes from store bought potatoes, but I recommend to start from seed potatoes. Store bought potatoes usually are treated for a longer shelf life, and may introduce fungal disease into your garden soil. If you decided to grow from store bought, at least choose organic ones. I hope this helps and thank you for visiting!
