Yeah, I could dig it :) Recently I learned that no matter what, you gotta do your homework and probably take notes; most seed packages have instructions on them too. While I'd be definitely okay with Adam showing me, I've sought out and found many a video you've described (the one about pruning basil was quite helpful).

For tomato cages, 5 or 6 years ago I went to my local Home Depot and bought a big roll of 6ft concrete rebar wire. The thick stuff they lay when pouring concrete. I made about 10 nice big cages out of it that have stayed strong and solid. Great for supporting even the largest heirloom plants.

Adam, years ago, one of my friends and I split a roll of 6' concrete reinforcement mesh from a DIY store. We rolled it out flat and then cut them into sections, leaving a long leader at one end. We bend these sections into cylinders and used the leaders to hold the cylinders together. The cylinders are in 4 different sizes that store together in concentric rings to save space. We made these over 10 years ago, and though they are rusty, there are still intact and supporting annual tomato crops. As you mentioned, I top my plants, but not until they are 6 feet tall, so they get plenty of height, and tomatoes. Thanks for another great video with another interesting subject matter expert... Happy gardening (and, cooking & eating!).

Adam’s production quality has been boosted - the new kitchen, the drone shots, interviews with qualified people who know their stuff - I can only see good things happening for the channel. All the best, Adam. I can’t wait to see what you have to bring forth. Also, a video idea - I’ve always wondered how soy sauces work. Light Soy Sauce? Dark Soy Sauce? Does it matter?

Your journalism background really shines through in everything you produce -- you get great interviews with all sorts of experts on niche subjects and it's clear that you put a lot of work into the researching/fact-checking for every video. Your editing/production quality is also clearly improving and it's wonderful to see. Your channel has renewed my love of cooking, and videos like this make me want to start gardening, too!

Adam coming in huge with the tomato part 2 timing! Definitely can relate to the bird/squirrel problem. Maybe others have heard of this as well, but I’ve been using organza bags (those drawstring bags wedding/party favors usually come in) to bag growing tomatoes, and that more or less stopped bird/squirrel damage over night! You can get them in all sorts of colors, so I figured why not green to blend in with the stuff they’re not interested in? Double/triple bagging definitely helps mask the color if that’s what attracts them. Would recommend getting large bags to fit around a tomato cluster, they’re pretty cheap too

Unlike most DIY style videos that I watch and think about doing but never do, I actually did this. I have tomatoes in my backyard and each plant has green tomatoes on it. I could have used this video a little sooner. Some of the plants did indeed escape the cages but are now being held by a cage, stake, rope combination. Very profession. Very proper. Like it props, so well. But thank you so much for educational videos that inspire me to get out there and try new things. I have really enjoyed gardening, I got my first fruits today. Two beautiful cucumbers. And I am so very excited for tomatoes! Soon!

Adam did you know that here in Sicily we have a variety of tomato named “siccagno” that actually doesn’t need any watering at all to grow. I don’t know, maybe it’s linked to the type of soil we have... It would be interesting to know if this variety is known in the USA or maybe YOU could start to grow it!!!

it's possible that that wouldnt be allowed to import, i know getting seeds from europe can be a real pain in the ass, which is fair bc of invasive species. not sure abt that one specifically or what the legality of that would be but it would probably be a pain, unless its also sold here normally, which i think it isnt bc ive never heard of that or any other no water varieties

Have been growing tomatoes in Northern England for many years now but every season brings surprises and we continue to learn. To date the most flavoursome tomatoes from our garden have been Sungold. The best cropping in recent years have been Ferline F1 but these are odd plants that send out secondary stems (no idea of correct term) from the middle of their huge leaves. We were still picking tomatoes into November last year from these secondary stems. Once the unheated greenhouse was really too cold we ripened the last few fruits in the house. No waste! We have lots of tomatoes in the freezer that are great to throw into sauces as required. Really enjoyed this mini series on tomato growing despite the significant difference in growing conditions between Adam’s garden and North Yorkshire. Really hoping that other garden to plate videos might follow - capsicums perhaps, salads? So satisfying to grow and then eat. Many thanks for these videos. X

Just found this video. Very good like always. Something else you might want to consider, especially if you're using the same bed year after year, is to solarize it over the winter. After your last crop of the year, till the soil well, water the hell out of it, then cover it tightly with thick black plastic. Stake the edges (and I'd put some rocks in the middle of it also) then cover it again with another layer about 4-6 inches above the first. Make sure the edges of the second sheet is on the ground to keep air from flowing between the sheets. Then leave it at least six weeks. This will heat the soil up enough to kill off almost all fungal spores and other nasties that infect your tomatoes year after year.

For anyone curious who wants to grow tomatoes, tarp planting is something I've used for a long time. It gives plants warmth, keeps the soil from splashing onto the plants, and recycles some of the water by trapping in the evaporation under the tarp. You can still use mulch around the base of the plants if needed, but I found it doesn't make much of a difference as long as you keep the tarps clean.
@abhaybhatt4286
@abhaybhatt4286 3 жыл бұрын
I've tried tarps but my issue is that slugs looove to hide underneath it, got the same issue with hay. My soil holds plenty of moisture anyways so most of the time I just leave it uncovered so the top can dry out, has the added benefit of making weeds less likely to establish. Maybe next season I'll try a hard mulch like woodchips...

Until I was about twelve or thirteen, I never tasted grocery store tomatoes. My parents had a pretty big garden and we only ate our own tomatoes. Never ate tomatoes in the winter. I still remember when I first tried the grocery store version - I was baffled by the lack of taste. I couldn't believe it! The difference in taste is huuuge. We did use to pick tomatoes even if they were not fully ripe, but they still were way better than the ones that looked ripe in the grocery store.
