Gotta get out there and do some pruning and tying up more on my tomato plants this weekend. I have two indeterminate that I'm only going to prune for air flow and trellis them up a concrete mesh wire panel just to see what they do. I have 6 determinate that I've only pruned the lower leaves to keep them off the mulch. My 18 indeterminate tomato plants on the string trellis are already double stemming and in need of some pruning for air flow. Excellent video as always!!

I'd like to grow a plant that way, the one you laid over with multiple stems growing up. Pretty cool. I weave the determinate tomatoes with T-posts and bailing twine and I run my indeterminate tomatoes up a string with a single stem. When the plants get close to the top of the string I let some suckers grow and run a string for them. Eventually I have a cut the top off of the main stem because I don't want to get on a step ladder just to get tomatoes lol. On the side of our house I've turned into a brassicas garden but have so many tomato plants from last year coming up that I'm just gonna let them run their course.

Thanks, Gary. My approach is to prune my cherry tomato plants as little as possible. But that is because i only have two of them(thats more than enough for us ) and they have plenty of space . If i had rows and rows, i would probably prune them slimmer🍅🍅🍅

Does anyone know if there is a way to visually tell a determinate from indeterminate tomato? I didn't identify them in my garden diagram and my plant marker id either washed off or entire marker is missing.

SUGGESTION: Find out which the common tomato varities at your local big box stores and nurseries, there will only be a maybe ten. Then make a your list of Det/Ind from a google search of those varieties.

Hi Gary, I see what you are saying: "follow the main stem, find a leaf branch, and snip off the sucker that grows between them." Question: why not snip off the leaf branch too, especially when it is close to the ground? I do understand that the leaf branch acts as a solar collector that aids photosynthesis, however isn't it robbing nutrients from the production of fruit and growth higher up the plant?

I do. I included that video and the ones you saw had branches prune. I like to wait 7-10 days and get some more growth before removing more leaves. But they will go soon. Thanks... Leaves dont rob nutrients but other fruit makes the plant allocate resources equally so sometime you get more fruit but smaller verses lots of leaves and fewer fruit, where you get bigger tomatoes.
