I was so tired of being blown off by doctors or have them laugh and say “ yeah, that’s menopause” as I was near tears. The pain, the weird symptoms like vertigo, unbelievable weight gain despite exercising and eating right, hot flashes every 20 minutes, no sleep and finally depression. I got no help and finally went to a nurse clinician who specializes in menopause and NOW I finally feel back to myself. If this was a man’s thing, there would be a pill by now.

@@Toryhol I did a Dutch test which shows way more than blood work. I put on HRT, which I had tried through doctor but I didn’t like so instead of trying different things my doc just took me off of them. My NP was able to add and adjust depending on symptoms. I was also given Synthroid. I had all the symptoms of a thyroid problems for about 20 years, but my doctor kept saying my levels were fine. As soon as I was on it, my pain went away, my hair grew back, I lost weight and I feel amazing. My doctor, when I see her, still wonders why I’m on it but I’m like “it’s helping. That’s why”. There are so many things with the thyroid that just doesn’t show up on standard tests. They have to look further if you still have symptoms and they don’t unless you “get bitchy”. Or “assertive” in terms of when men act this way.

Wanna know a crazy story? I saw a gynecologist at around age 35, asked her to test my hormone levels due to a suspected imbalance, and she said she refused to do so since I was not premenopausal. I found this utterly appalling! Don’t I have every right to do this if I am willing to pay for it!?!? You’re awesome, Mel! And you look amazing!

Same thing for me. They flat refused when i was starting with perimenopouse, i am 54 now in menopause and they still refuse to do tests. I also have nodule in my toroid and have to check it up. Bug they do it nt want to do tests for tiroide hormon either. just the base. No t3, no t4... Nothing further. Only if THS is abnormal (whatever that means) ... So agrivating. We are paying for health insurance and yet they don't allows us to use when we needed. The doctor told me those tests are not important, i am menopausal women and tfats it. She, yes a woman doctor and genetsl practicioner, gave me some estrogen hrt on which i had side effects within a month, and had to stop it. And no follow up no check up. I cant even have a gynecologists visit unless she gives referal, and that is again if she thinks something is abnormal 😢. I live in Montreal, Canada. We used to have pretty good health system, now!!! Ever since damn covid the whole system has gone to hell.... 🤬🤬🤬...

yah, my doc told me that my frozen shoulder, brain fog, my itchy skin are random symptoms that come with old age and I need to live with them. Except for the hot flashes I was complaining about, he never recognized the other symptoms as being related to menopause. I'm so sick of how most male doctors dismiss menopause symptoms in women, so after hearing this video, I decided to change my male doctor with a female doctor who will be more sympathetic for what i'm going through. Men cannot relate at all to women's bodies. thank you Mel for interviewing these amazing women doctors, please bring more female doctors on your pod to talk about women health issues to educate all of us women. Our health issues have been IGNORED by the traditional medical system for too long because it only catered to men's health for the most part of the modern medicine.

Well this is great information! If I want to work really hard at feeling ALMOST as good as my husband does, all I have to do is watch what I'm eating, when I eat it, and remember the protein! Get a bedtime routine and stick to it, get an exercise routine and stick to it - lift more weights! Not too much cardio! Unless yes more cardio! Am I thinking about my exercise routine? Well then I'm wasting valuable time that I could be using to pay more attention to what I eat! I should probably be more social, but I still need to be thinking about what I eat and definitely no coffee or alcohol, never mind that those restrictions will cut out a lot of social opportunities! That's ok, maybe I can go for walks with friends - but OMG WHAT ABOUT WATER? DID I DRINK ENOUGH WATER? And the supplements! I have to worry about the supplements! I should probably relax more. But not too much! Otherwise I'm forgetting something crucial about one of my multiple routines that I can't interrupt! But I'd better relax, otherwise how am I going to get in the mood for romance? A drink?? That's the worst thing to do, especially within a certain number of hours before bedtime! Wait, what am I forgetting? I'm forgetting something...

Mel - as a 47 year old woman this subject is top of mind for me. As I have walked thru it and learned it's just SHOCKING that women are not even treated like we're part of society. In the 1800s we were witches. In the 1900s we were hysterical. In the 2000s it's a mental health crisis. None of this is true. We're misunderstood, misdiagnosed, and mostly walking through this blindly. I remember asking my mom, and other older women - is this normal? When did it start? How long did it last? But now that I've been in it for a decade it's absolutely shocking. It's so hard to trust doctors because we're minimized and labeled as crazy, when really we're just full of hormones. Thank you so much for doing this important episode. More please.

Just realized recently from listening to podcasts I'm probably on the spectrum also. I'm still fighting the good fight with some prescription estrogen, dhea and over the counter bioidenticle progesterone. And good vitamins. Lots of gardening for exercise. I no longer have my horse so will have to figure out what to do in place of scooping poop and moving haybales. Yes WTF Mel 😆 Just keep fighting it and smile! Thank you!

Dear Mel, thank you a lot for this episode. Here in Germany, the topic of menopause and bioidentical hormones has been going on for a few years now. Dr. Sheila de Liz is a gynecologist who didn't find anything on the subject herself either and went out and did some research. Because of her and her book "Women on fire", I am in the fortunate position of finally being able to embrace and replenish my body. I get the bioidentical hormones estrogen (as a cream, daily) and progesterone (as a capsule, daily) on health insurance prescription and testosterone (as a cream, daily) I still have to pay for myself after getting a private prescription. There is still a lot to be done to get women back into hormonal balance. Btw, there are species of whales that enter menopause. The knowledge is not very common. On the net I read this info that I would like to quote here: "Besides humans, however, there are four species of whales for which nature has provided a kind of menopause: orcas (killer whales), belugas, narwhals and short-finned pilot whales. Orcas, for example, have their last baby around age 35 to 50, but have a life expectancy of about 60 to 80 years. Recent studies found evidence that the fertility phase of Asian elephant females also ends relatively early in life. Common to all these species is that they live in larger family groups. The older females contribute to species preservation by caring for the offspring of the younger ones." Once again a thousand thanks for you, your family and your work. Best regards Martina

Wish I would’ve had this information in 2020 when I thought I was going crazy! Turns out I had zero estrogen and at 54 was in full-blown menopause. Not a clue that not only was that the culprit of weight gain, but eczema, which I never had, joint pain all over my body, night sweats, constant hot flashes, crying for no reason, no energy, hair loss, etc etc. And half of the treatments-the ones that REALLY work-are not covered by insurance!!! Not only is it ridiculous women were not included in medical studies, but then insurance doesn’t recognize half of our symptoms/treatments🤬

Just a note about pellet therapy- the hormones are said to be released steadily as the body needs it- not just surged through all at once. This is supposed to be the benefit of pellets- that your body uses it as needed. Mel, I am so glad to hear you say you have the sad symptoms as I do! The doctors were the worst when I first went into menopause! They said it was depression. I just wasn’t sleeping anymore 😢 Such a great show!! So needed.

I spent over 10 years getting cycled through anxiety and depression meds to “help me sleep”. I started taking progesterone and sleeping through the night and no longer need these crazy meds that never worked. It jacked up my life insurance rates to the point where they were higher than my older, alcoholic now ex husband’s rates. It’s been a harsh journey of discrimination and oppression, that is bitterly sad and has wasted so much of my time and almost broke my spirit many times.

What to talk about in future? Maybe more detailed on HOW To exercise with hormonal disbalance, how to intermittent fast with it, how our lifestyle should look like (because there are so many trendy lifestyles again, mostly coming from men) how to help ourselves with mental symptoms? Like a foggy brain, forgetness, mood swings... Also I have an ADHD so I think it got crazy from the age 30 because of hormonal changes. Another topic to explore

Good comment. I'm 67 considering going on antidepressant because I'm not pulling out of depression for years. I did HRT at 50 yrs old no regrets it was great. A little pricey. My son started using kratom to get off pain meds due to a bad accident. The problem is him now having seizures. His brother & I read up on kratom & I almost started due to extreme fatigue & looking for energy but I just never did. Well now he is having full blown seizures & I'm at a loss. He doesn't live that close & they are all adults so...there is that.

And I meant to ask what form do you buy the kratom. I think it can be smoked used in tea coffee? Are there capsules? And the estrogen you said is creme from health food store? Or compound pharmacy? On HRT I did the pellets by physician but took progesterone sublingual from compound pharmacy. I didn't think it was a big deal so one time I ran out & didn't refill. Well I started bleeding at work. I think I saw him following day & he said "you absolutely can't just go off like that" I went back on the progesterone & it stopped the bleeding.

I am so thankful for the attentive new Dr who, along with a gynocologist referral, also found the abnormality with my Thyroid - which my male Dr would not do any testing even though there is a family history of thyroid cancer. I am 36 and I recently learned that the first day you start bleeding is not the first day of your period - what the ****. The first part is the spotting before your period; seriously?! I always thought whenever I could ruin my sheets, I was on my period. Unbelievable. Recently, I had a pregnancy complication and the number of times I was asked the unquantifiable question - “how much are you bleeding?”- without the language to answer in a shared language. They’d say is it heavy, light, spotting, which is all completely subjective. I’m angry at the lack of discussion around these topics amongst people in general, but especially between teachers/doctors/parents and children.

Absolutely what I've been needing to hear to help myself naturally with this journey. I'm 64, in Endrochrinologist care, 4 yrs, monitoring my thyroid which also involves watching hormone levels. 'She' is fabulous and, per my questions, is not pushing hormone replacement as my levels still in normal ranges. This info today is the motivation I need for self care. Thank you so much!

I am completly backwards when it comes to sleep times, being rested , and best time for working out. If Im up first thing in the morning , say 6:30 and I go for a walk and tackle my day . Im exausted , dragging my body by lunch time. My panic attacks start up by evening that are completly under control if i sleep in in the mornings. Since i was a baby I have never been a morning person . I feel best when i go to bed late as thats when i have the most energy and sleep in until lunch time. Ive tried to correct this so many times as my daily return doesnt always allow me to sleep in like that and I always feel horrible all day. I wish i could be normal and sleep at night and wake up early . The earliest Im able to get to bed is 11:00 because of certain responsibilities that I cannot change. Im most rested on 10 hours of sleep.

And fun tidbit ADHD women are highly affected by hormones! That is one of the reasons the teen years can be so rough. Women with ADHD are usually more prone to postpartum depression, PMDD, and things start to fall apart or they think they have dementia or are loosing their mind as they approach menopause as they hormones drop off. Linda Roggli is a great resource for women with ADHD and is particularly interested in hormonal factors. May be a good person to put on your list Mel or to chat with in general. I think you would enjoy her.

Thank you for this! I read (listened to) the book Estrogen Matters and then got on HRT, my hot flashes stopped after about a week to 10 days, after a couple of weeks I started sleeping at least 7 hours every night, now if I could just lose weight I’d be normal again. After listening to these podcasts and reading that book I feel like I have enough knowledge to correct the misinformation. And now I feel like I can also get rid of this fat, I had lost hope of ever getting back to a normal weight.

I love Mel! The impact of perimenopause/menopause is a significant topic that needs to be normalized and embraced… not only by society but by the medical profession itself. It is long overdue, since the debacle back in 2003 with the WHI study. However, this needs to be more than just a one hour convo which barely scratches the surface. Avrum Bluming, a renowned oncologist, and Carol Tavris, a social psychologist, published “Estrogen Matters” which should be required reading by all women and their gynecologists. Carol or Avrum would be excellent guest future guests. Please have another episode on this topic- or leave it for the medical podcasters. It deserves more discussion.

I do it all, eat right, lift weights, walk, play Pickleball etc. and have been going through this crap even with BHRT since I was 45. I don't understand with all that is available why we don't have better answers. I'll keep working out and do everything I can to be the best I can be. I just wish my body would cooperate. Your mind is brilliant and can seriously help balance you no matter what stage of menopause your going through. Love Dr. Amy! So much Great information and thank you for sharing. Very interesting episode! I'm 43 and I gained about 15-20 lbs in the last 4 years. I noticed my lower belly just keeps expanding and I have the flabby arms of someone who gained 100 lbs, cellulite on them and everything. I have no idea why. I still eat the same. I've gotten maybe 20% more sedentary, but to counteract that, I started faithfully walking 10,000 steps a day, which takes me about 1.5 hours. It's been about 2 months now of walking and I've literally lost 0 lbs. I mean, NOTHING. My pants don't even fit better. And yes, I still eat the same. I feel like I'm going bananas. I am going to start weight training again since I used to do this in my 20s and some of my 30s, but i mean, COME ON... NO WEIGHT LOSS in 2 MONTHS?! If hormones is the reason why, it sucks being a woman. But I will prevail. I'm looking forward to starting weights and feeling STRONG again. I just can't get over the fact that I'm losing NO weight @ 10,000 steps a day for the last 2 months. BAAANAAANAAAS!!!

That sounds incredibly frustrating!!! Insulin resistance, low thyroid function and other hormone changes can contribute to weight gain and an inability to lose weight. If you're interested in this topic, Dr. Sarah Gottfried has been interviewed many times around this discussion (I believe she was recently on Dr. Andrew Huberman's podcast) and I would highly recommend her. Unfortunately calories in, calories out is not the whole story when it comes to weight loss but I love that you're motivated and I think your weight training idea could definitely benefit you because muscle helps to increase your BMR. I hope you find the answers that you're looking for and wishing you all the best on your health journey! ❤

Ladies, I had been going through the same thing!!! My anxiety was through the roof, trouble sleeping, major weight gain 😿, dry patch on my elbow 😳, itchy ear. I ended up going to my doctor to see if I could get on whatever bcs I did not know wtf was going on. I am 45 and I was desperate over my increasing fluffiness. 😸 She let me know some of her patients really liked WW if they wanted to know exactly what to eat and how much. Or if you are more of an emotional eater, some of her patients liked Noom. I was rolling my eyes at all of this bcs I thought I tried everything but I figured I needed to know my macros and let an app do the thinking. No joke, I lost 25 lbs. Not fast bcs I started on 11/22- 3/23 but the scale FINALLY started moving down! My hubby started 2 weeks after me in support and he lost 25 lbs! We went on vacation and stopped tracking and we both gained some back 🙀😸but we signed up again. I’m losing again being super honest with everything I eat, strength training and cardio. I’m getting better quality of sleep. But I definitely modified all my favorite foods with zero point foods, eating a ton less sugar and I still earn my wine or cocktail happy hour cheat moment by earning points. It’s not as hard as I thought it would be. I learned a lot of what I thought I was doing right could be done better. What a journey. Still on it. I hope this helps anyone who desperately needed it like I did. Having 3 sizes in my closet is annoying. The only thing I could be sure about was my shoe size. 😿 Now I want to further master my hormones!🙌🏼

I am SO frustrated about what's happening to my brain and body, but it's compounded by the dearth of healthcare providers who actually care and/or have the knowledge about this stage of women's lives. I work at a major healthcare system that touts itself as one of the best in the country, but sadly its womens health providers are largely dismissive of treating peri symptoms with bHRT unless one is in menopause. This was a great video as far as it went. Dr Amy or Mel could someone please take this just one step further. When a woman has a hysterectomy that also removes the ovaries, you have instant menopause. This is different from natural menopause but after 20 years of personal experience and research I haven’t found anyone who address this kind of menopause. I’ve had 5 different doctors over this period prescribe various kinds of HRT none of which has helped my vaginal dryness which is now vaginal atrophy. I wouldn’t wish this on anyone. The medical field doesn’t experience this and so I feel they don’t care. Changing doctors can be severely limited depending on where you live and your financial base for scheduling appointments hundreds of miles from where you live. Sorry for venting.

Thank you for this podcast. I will listen to it a few more times to identify possible options for me, given I fall into the demographic that has little to no studies on what menopause looks like to me and what the treatment options are. My gyn listened to my symptoms and immediately recommended antidepressants. I've done enough research to understand that antidepressants are not a solution that is recommended without a clear hormonal understanding of what is going on with that particular patient.

Thank you both this was so informative for us women. It's sad and not right that we are NOT taught this stuff to know what is going on when it happens. Sadly, they did not research it. Thank you, Dr Amy, for caring and researching for all of us, so we can learn and try to control it if we can.

I would love to see Dr. Amy talk about how these hormonal changes can affect men and women with anxiety. Can hormone replacement help men with anxiety? Are these changes responsible for teens in puberty who experience depression and anxiety? These are areas that doctors do not address, but instead just hand out pills as band aids for these extreme feelings.

OMG learned so much. i work in health care and had flooding during perimenopause. i thought i was hemorrhaging and planning to go to er. thank god a nurse practitioner noticed my distress and actually had to explain the symptom to me. just knowing what type of symptoms could come with peri menopause and menopause was such a relief.

I have been lucky so far, didn’t have many symptoms. The only one that really bothers me is weight gain. I have been struggling with that lately. I have been dieting, walking like 12K steps a day, I go to the gym twice a week and no results, nada…so please, do not tell me I need to increase my activity because I still have a life!! 😢

At 37 I was told i needed a complete hysterectomy. I had my surgery. My male GYN told me to take 3 tums a day and get ready for the Rollercoaster. That's it, No hormone therapy given, due to having endometriosis. I went to home to take care of my 5 years old daughter. That was a tough time,, a very depressing time.

Menopause sucks!!!!! I have been in menopause for 9 years, I’m tired already. I have gone the route of supplements, I take about 35 supplements a day. I’ve gotten most of the symptoms under control except the weight gain and sleep which is pretty important. I try CBD oil for the sleeping it helps, sleep aids make me so sleepy the next day, can’t do it. I’ve always been a pretty fit person but I’m so over weight it causes me depression and because lack of sleep it’s hard to get myself motivated to work out, a vicious circle. I had frozen shoulders from menopause for 3 years, my Dr kept saying it was arthritis and I refused to believe that, talk about painful. I wish I could find some part of my old self again. I’ve had to do my own research. We need more studies on this, it’s very debilitating at times. The dark places this takes us to is a real issue. Thank you for talking about this.

I had both my ovaries removed approx 2 years post menopause and was told it was no big deal, I wasn’t using them anyway. The lack of information is astounding, I got HRT and they are already talking taking me off (it’s only been 6 mos) as they’re worried about breast cancer. I feel like I have no hope. The surgical menopause was so much worse that regular menopause which was bad enough. Please do a podcast about menopausal women who are then given surgical menopause. For younger women given surgical menopause there is more info but nothing for those of us who had the surgery AFTER menopause. I feel so alone.

I had both my ovaries removed postmenopause due to borderline ovarian tumor. It feels like having a second menopause, hot flashes, insomnia etc. I take 300 mg micronised progesterone and it is a huge help in my sleep. If you search in pubmed progesterone postmenopausal insomnia you can find several studies about it. It is a misinformation that you dont need progesterone if you had hysterectomy. Natural progesterone is a protective neurosteorid. I rather use progesterone to sleep than strong addictive sleeping medication.

Oh wait, I've been getting pellets for years and they are the best. This is the first time I have heard that testosterone pellets are not great. My dr. checks my levels every 6 months to make sure my levels are good. Honestly, the higher the testosterone in my system, the better I feel. I had a hard time getting hormone replacement from my gyno because of the breast and colon cancer history in my family. New studies show that they actually can help prevent cancer, and more doctors need to stop relying on that old study. Anyway, I love my HRT and my life, mood, and energy have so much improved. Love you Mel!

I implore people to look into intermittent fasting . It has been so healing for me and especially weight loss. I started to intermittent dry fast four months ago too and my gut is almost gone and I'm in my 40's! I do a random extended fast too. These help turn brown fat to white so it can vanish easier. There are so many more benefits so please research if it's right for you too. I want everyone to thrive. 🤗
