The problem with buying anything used is the people always tend to think it's worth more than it is, especially things that don't run well or aren't running at all. Everybody thinks there's always someone out there who's willing to pick up their bike which sometimes is true. Just don't fall for that oh I got a couple other guys that are interested because that's kind of what everyone says, of course sometimes it's actually true so

personally i'll buy and sell cars, im trying to get into bikes for fun. I dont get attached too the cars, so bottom dollar questions dont offend me as much, but if that's the way you haggle, thats how i haggle back. my response to "what's the least you'll take" is typically somthing along "depends, whats the most you'll pay" in a joking, but serious manner. it turns the table on them, so if their top dollar is more than your bottom, your good. if not, you can say "well i was looking to get more" and proceed to talk about why the car/item is worth more. if they don't wanna put their top dollar on the table like that, just say your looking to get the asking price, because really you are. or come down a little and work from there. Afterall the price of your item was enticing enough to get them there, they are not going to be shocked your looking close to asking price. my rule of thumb is always do research first and be reasonable with pricing. dont ask for too much if you know the item has alot of issues. but don't sell for too much less than what you honestly think it is worth. there are always plenty of buyers interested, unless if asking price is too high, in which case, refer to rule of thumb. just my take on selling, great tips for buying in the vid ;)

@ Digital Citizen - lots of people ask the 'bottom dollar' question over the phone or in an email - my response to that is 'You can see the asking price, now you really need to come look at the car / bike and see how you value it - and if we're close enough we'll have a deal!'

Really glad you made sure every viewer understood the value of personal connection. Im 18 years old and I worked for 4 months to buy my first car for $2500 (a 92 RS Camaro) and traded if after 6 months for a 98 Honda SuperHawk. I got kicked out and was unemployed and was absolutely in love with my bike, however I didn't have money to even eat. A guy on Craigslist took complete and total advantage of that and haggled me down to $1500. It really made me feel like shit to get rid of it for so cheap, and now I see it every day cause the guy is my neighbor LOL

@Ugly ... sometimes you just have to SAY NO and wait for a better offer! But, once you sell, it's sold, it's gone, it's over and it's a total waste of your life to be looking back and even thinking of it any more! Part of negotiating involves keeping quiet about information that could be 'harmful to you' ... if you tell someone that you're desperate and have to sell the bike in order to eat ...well, lets just say it was a costly lesson? Be sure to learn from it and don't make it again! And seriously ... I'm saying this in a whole lot kinder / warmer tone that the writing might suggest! Best regards !

Got a decent 81 CB750K this weekend and applied these rules. Before I probably would've asked the guy what his bottom dollar was, but you made valid points and it does seem like a jerk move. He orginally wanted $800 and I got it for $500 after offering $460. He had no emotional connection with the bike so I didn't feel too bad.

I just used your techniques to negotiate a price and I have to say it was a much better experience than buying my first bike. I read the guys face (he was sad to let it go at that price) and decided to come up on my offer asking if he would feel better about that. as a result he accepted my initial offer of 65% of asking price. It also made me feel better about paying so little for a strong running ride ready machine.

This is a great "tutorial" for the new used bike purchaser. I feel like you were very forthright, honest and well-spoken. Bravo on teaching a buyer a level of sensitivity and respect for the trade of such a personal and meaningful vehicle. I know that selling my bike would be (and has been) one of the hardest things for me, and a kid (or man/woman) that seems to understand that and respect my love of the sport stands a much better chance of taking the bike, especially if I don't really want to part with it. Just overall a very good video and I had to offer you praise for it. Thanks for looking out for the newer buyers and riders and you, sir, ride safely. :)

You trust yourself with your life. Once you buy that bike, its up to you to make sure it is in good working condition, and stays that way. If you are a novice with motorcycle maintenance you hire someone to maintain it, if you want to learn yourself then you do it yourself. But whether you buy it from a company or from a craiglister, its up to you to trust yourself. You are the only person you can trust at the end of it all anyway.

Good points. I've never been the "bottom dollar" kinda guy but I've never really thought about the big picture too. People want to be heard and appreciated. Ask about them and their relationship to the bike, watch body language, make a connection, then haggle softly. Instead of coming in like a turd and just asking bottom dollar. Good point.

Another good tip is to look for a bike that is completely stock. Highly modified bikes usually have owners that are vary attached to the bike and less likely to give you a good price

This is a great video for beginners purchasing a motorcycle,If you really like the machine and the owner has taking well care of his pride and joy make him feel good about his bike as you said. A lot of good information you have given. My first Street bike was 1975 H1 500 I've always purchased Kawasaki's" I bleed green" now my hopefully last new bike is ZX14 turbocharged. I do look for older Kawasaki's superbikes as I now collect them, getting a 1985 GPz 750 turbo in very good condition theirs almost know talking them down,since I would like get one. It's really interesting that he brings up the cultural differences and negotiation because they definitely exist, especially looking at differences between Eastern Western styles, and some cultures that negotiation doesn't start until you're ready to walk away from the deal which is sort of contrary to the American version.

A left driver foot beg , all mounting hardware for the right front brake ( which I have yet to get ) , Air box cover and filter , the stater cover and all hard ware you have to remove to get to the starter . It also had a fried wiring harness . It still turned over by hand and had compression so I thought it would be worth scrap if rebuilding failed .

I sell new and used cars and I really do not think bikes are much different. 1) Take the time to understand the owner and why they are selling.2) Appraise the bike from -car from the standpoint reason- what does it need and the cost it will take. 3) Express your concerns and be practical to the seller. 4) When you make your offer you will now have leverage and can justify your offer and a deal can be made much easier. " What's your bottom dollar isn't relevant anymore that sounds more like what old people used to say.
@onetwothree4148
@onetwothree4148 5 жыл бұрын
Never make personal appeals to the old heart strings unless you are sure you are dealing with someone who is unusually compassionate. If you tell most people you used to have an identical bike when you were a kid, you're also telling them that their bike is worth more to you than it is to most people, and you would pay more for it if you had to. Same goes for a seller trying to squeeze a few dollars more out of a buyer by saying they are going through hard times. You're also telling the buyer that you can't wait as long as you should for other offers, and might have to sell for less.

I use one of two methods for my purchasing of bikes. I will either pitch that I am financially strapped and can pay X - if you want your bike sold quick... I would love to buy it and restore or treat it well (not true because I am parting it out). This will win the seller over if they have that emotional attachment and might make them feel good to give someone a "deal". My other method is "I have cash today - what would you take for it?" If they are asking $500 and will take $400 - I'll respond with "I was thinking $300 because that is all I can swing and I really want it" This works 70% of the time - if not, I'll get the bike for $350 all day long. I deal with parts bikes so this is a little different beast - if they have such an emotional attachment to a parts bike... it would have already been fixed.' Good Video though - different strokes for different folks Just don't ever come to buy a bike and start picking it apart - I've had many bikes and vehicles that people have tried to haggle by pointing out all the negatives. I will not sell anything to a jerk and have turned down very nice offers from people who just tried too hard.

Great vlog. I sold my first scooter only because I was getting a Ninja 250. I cried on the phone when the insurance adjuster told me my Ninja 250 was a total loss (no salvage buy-backs aloud in Illinois). I will never, ever sell my KLX250. It may be up on a stand right now. It may need a lot of work (wear and tear from epic wear and tear), but it's still my baby. I had a nightmare that I traded it for a Ducati and woke in a cold sweat. True story. Nice visual aid, as usual. :)

@discipleofhate That price is actually fairly middle of the road for Bandit 400's. In my opinion they have a slightly higher asking price than their contemporaries not because they are better bikes but because they are more rare. If you are set on a decent Bandit 400, then you may have to pay that much for it. However if you are just looking for an early-90s small displacement sport bike, then there are plenty of other options.

Well its up to you really. One time an old lady was trying to sell me a bike for $1500, I ended up paying $200 after pointing out all that was wrong and all that needed to be invested in it. Point is, you never really know where people are coming from in a deal, and if you are stuck at $300, you're better off letting the seller know straight up instead of waffling around on it. Ninjas arent that rare, if you don't end up making a deal, you'll find another one soon enough

My reason for the question is, I don't know you. Are you saying "$3000 is my price I'm not moving." Also, it there a seasonal difference? @spelunkerd Kind of, but KBB isnt very accurate for vintage bikes. What I do is do a nationwide search for the make, model, and year bike on craigslist, get an average asking price for similar bikes in similar condition, and then subtract about 15% from that. That determines market value for me. You can also get on the forum for your bike and see what other owners think their bikes are worth, that is usually pretty accurate too.

Once I took a lady and we rented a little VW Golf and drove out to Bath to check out the countryside... even tho the gas cost quite a bit that drive was entirely worth it. @mase115 Bringing the book value of a bike to the attention of the seller is an effective bargaining strategy, but I would get the time to know the bike and the man first. It might have upgrades which justify the price. Getting someone to drop from 24-1200 is tough, he might be the kind of guy content to wait until someone comes along who is willing to pay his asking price, in which case you might be SOL. If you like the bike, go see it, and see what you can learn.

When you work in the field as you do, it's easy to know what things are worth. But as an amateur, the hardest thing is to actually know what things are worth. I guess ebay and craigslist are your friend when it comes to that. But the prices listed there are asking price. Is there a motorcycle database that lists selling value for various bikes (like a blue book for autos)?

I dunno man, never bought a bike from a dealer. They have a whole different set of priorities than private sellers. Mainly, they gotta eat too selling new bikes is their job, so its much harder I would assume to appeal to their emotional attachment to the bike.

@mrmaxstorey I would probably get down there in the summer, say like July or something close to that. But again, it may not happen. There is just a film school there I am really interested in, but it all depends on if i get accepted/scholarships/etc. Haha

I hate it when the first thing they mail/ring/say is "whats your lowest price?" I usually say it's a million dollars.

@mrmaxstorey Yeah, my main goal was just to simply get rid of the bike. My only concern is come in a few months when I get a registration renewal letter from the DMV b/c this kid never registered it in his name. Also on the title as a favor to him I put down as a gift so he didn't get hit with the tax. I hope that don't come back to bite me ether. But I did get him to sign a receipt though but I should had him put down more then just his name on the receipt. CYA

@dagazkid Yeah, ebay isnt really too conducive to haggling. Basically you just bid, which is why I dont buy bikes from ebay

Hey man, great tips here. I may be going to college as a sophomore in Florida next fall. And because gas is getting crazy expensive... I was thinking about getting another bike. I may have to sell mine when i move. So if that does happen, is there any possible chance that I can get something from you? I would like to, just so i can show my appreciation for your vids, they have helped me out alot haha.

How do you set a price on a custom restored bike? Such as a cafe or bobber.

If I have given a good deal on the price I have set there would be no haggling room so haggling would set me off.

@Michiganborn1969 Lol I get a lot of good feedback from my visual aids, I like to incorporate them if I can. Sounds like you did a good thing selling at the price you did. Sometimes milking a buyer for every last dollar shouldnt be the main goal.

only worth 300 dollars if I was going to be satisfied. At this point it almost felt insulting to offer 300 dollars but I had no choice. he lowered to five hundred dollars. Now we are waiting to see if he can get the bike started. Is it fair that my partner and I keep offering 300 dollars or should we just end the trade and wish him luck?

Right on this Max. It's pretty much the same in England though I think bikes are slightly more expensive for some reason I can't grasp. I'm sure I live in the rip off centre of the universe! High petrol prices, high road tax, high insurance, and very modest wages ggggrrrrr curse those politicians! Don't you agree that the genuine folks stick out a mile?

So, that price is what you will expect to sell it or flip it for right? Example I have a guy selling a 2011/ VL800 (C-50T) Suzuki 2190 Miles said "bottom line" is $3500. I have seen this bike w similiar miles and year on CL and Cycle trader (private sellers) from 4300-6400. I feel like if I could get it at 3k I should be good.
@mrmaxstorey
@mrmaxstorey 8 жыл бұрын
Yeah that would be a good deal. Remember that craigslist prices generally settle for about 15% less than asking price, so what you are proposing isnt unreasonable, unless of course 3500 really is his firm price

I'm looking at a 91 Bandit gsf400... It is in good shape, has 11xxxmiles on it. all stock but has the original CDI box on it that are expensive to fix when they go out... He is asking 2grand for it. I know it's not worth that, but what area should I be looking at price wise?

Hey man great video! Quick question for ya. I'm looking at a bike that is 14 yo and books for 1200-1900 in excellent condition and they are asking 2400. How do I approach that? the guy I spoke with in the phone sounded like an older man and the bike is a sport bike so I was thinking it was maybe his sons or something but that's just speculation. Any advice where to start?

haha indeed my friend! but i'm desperate to sell it i had it posted for $1,200 much more than I paid. I paid $500 for a non working scooter which was easily fixed with a new battery sparkplug and an oil change. So my 'bottom dollar' is pretty low but i want an actual motorcycle more than anything haha
