As a card carrying Aikido "hater" and someone who is very skeptical of the effectiveness of Aikido, this is the best Aikido video I have ever seen. I really like how you managed expectation with this drill. You didn't over sell the effectiveness of the deflections as if they are a magic abilty. the reality check moments keep things grounded in a refreshing way. I also LOVE, and I repeat LOVE, how you progressively move trainign with resistance. The single greatest criticism of Aikido is its lack of sparring, and you successfully demonstrated Aikido with resistance training. Bravo. That is a feat. Also, with the analogy to football, you demonstrated training that is unique to Aikido. Typically, even if when I see Aikido training with sparring, I still ask why train Aikido over, say, a grappling style like wrestling, BJJ or Judo. The randori you showed is unique enough to add value to actually training Aikido like this, and honestly if I think this training is really valuable for self defense. I honestly can not believe I just typed all of that.

@@volatileepiphanies5547 damn. This comment means so much, honestly! Glad you found value in a way that maybe altered your perception. I’m an aikido hater myself believe it or not.. in love with the art and it’s potential, but I get frustrated with the way it’s trained (generally)… makes its critiques hard to defend. That’s why training like this is so crucial because it shatters everything you think you know.. it humbles you. and that mindset, I think, should be applied in all aspects of training. There’s a time and place to go along and learn the movements.. but being a healthy skeptic means you should really try to “break the technique” … spar… pressure test… cross train… add in unconventional attacks, feints, etc. that’s really the only way to make these techniques reliable and really flush out a deeper understanding of aikido.

I think the “game” of Aikido randori is pretty underrated in general. No, it isn’t 1 to 1 martial, but I think basically everyone I’ve ever met has deeply underestimated the cardio requirement. Add the layer of tactical thinking and it gets tough quickly. These are both things with clear martial carryover. And, actually, the American football comparisons were rife where I trained, too. Cool video, man, keep it up !

When i see Aikido,it reminds me of Pizza Tower Dash Grab. This seem focused on hand fighting,so standing grappling, it appears it would work well with Wing Chun concepts. Are you Tenshin Aikido only,or have knowledge of other lineages, such as Yoshinkan or Tomiki? 8:52 i would say more Sumo, where i have seen Aiki concepts done at full speed and power. Morihei was a fan of it,and the image of him in uniform is breaking my sides. Been trying to find someone that makes a art of straight-arming Your shitposting style of teaching appears to be quite effective at explaining.

@@junichiroyamashita we have a wing chun guy at our dojo and we are always so fascinated by all the overlapping concepts in the hand movements. I mainly trained Tenshin Aikido, but also train Iwama and some aikikai background. Never had the privilege of trying Yoshinkan or Tomiki! I just looked up the pizza dash grab.. that’s hilariously accurate lol. I guess I’m the pizza in this exercise. Totally agree on Sumo. Theyre masters of grounding and using angles to off balance bigger opponents

Hi kevin, I just wonder why tenshin aikido people's usually failed in randori testing? I mean in this video they are supposedly know how to throw uke in unstable position, hand evasion etc..what makes this so hard? Thank you

@@rifki_kus7991 in this exercise we are not allowed to use any technique. That’s why it’s very hard to stay up. Once you get good at this exercise, you’re allowed to start using technique. Still, even with technique it’s very hard to survive 3 good ukes
