You are so right Buckin' about not counting strokes or measuring teeth. That saw don't know how long each tooth is, nor does it care as long as each tooth is sharp and cut to the same angle. Great video and thanks for helping us folks understand these methods. Cheers, Peace, Joy, and Love.

Most of the raker gauges on the market these days are the type that sit on top of 2-3 teeth , fairly useless if some teeth need extra filing and become dissimilar lengths , the Carlton file-o-plate is pretty hard to come by but I can get the Husky ones here in Oz , I think the reason why so many "how to sharpen a chainsaw" vids stress even tooth length is because they don't have a raker gauge that allows individual settings , as August Hunicke would say , "does that make sense ? " Have a great weekend everybody , be kind :-)

Loving your Videos been hand filing since grandpa taught me how to run the saw but since finding you on KZbin my chains cut better than new. Most the guys that I run saws with kind a laugh at me for a file on my own but they all pay $8 to $10 to get theirs ground they only get 3-4 good sharpens to each chain I haven’t even counted how many I get to a chain yet so far I’ve stretched the chain passed my adjustment on my saw before my teeth or too short. Got to love getting as much life out of a chain as you can love your videos pass the joy.

The "eye in the sky" really helps. Interesting thing, I had my depth gauges too low the other day. It wouldn't cut well unless I had a really light touch with the saw and afterwards I noted that I may have stretched my chain a bit. Rita with her flare pants. I had some when I was about that age, LOL.

Rita is so cute. So fun to go out knowing you're lookin' good :) Loves her Daddy, that's sweet too. Late this last summer, I hammered the end of my saw into a corner fence post. Stupid mistake, but the brand new chain jumped off the bar, and jammed on the chain catcher (it did it's job!). The teeth aren't real bad, but after I got the chain out from behind the chain catcher, it seems to have bent a link. I'm going to have to take it to the local hardware/stihl dealer and see if they can replace the link. It won't even sit in the groove on the bar. I don't know what's worse...wrecking a chain or wrecking a brand new chain lol.
@jeffreyrubish3476 жыл бұрын
I had that happen. It damaged some drivers. They can be carefully filed flat sometimes so the chain is still usable but it is time-consuming.

When I first started I never knew how much had to be taken off after rocking so I never did catch up to the point using semi chisel so I was always cutting dull after that. Now I know I have to take about half the life out of the chain teeth if it happens! I also went through a stage where I got too much gullet and she kicked like a mule trying to bore cut, but ever so gradually I'm gettin' better at freehand on nothing but full chisel. I still don't pay enough attention to getting the depth gauges just right but that will come!

Right on Tony I'm a jack of all & do bits n bobs of seasonal garden work I'm not afraid to get in about things either although I am very cautious using saws as I have limited experience & rarely use them, that being said it's easier for me to just pay for a new chain than make a mess of one due to ignorance, I am trying to get into this self sharpening but the local (small plant hire & supplies) sells about 6 different sized files & no raker gauges! It's a bit of a headache to an amateur all the driver/ pitch/ 5/32, 3/8 variety etc & where do you find a universal raker gauge if such a thing exists? Do you need a stihl gauge for a stihl or a Mac for a Mac etc? I'm sorry but I'm sure there's others out there who find themselves in my situation ( or am I the only dafty lol don't answer that) I m sure I'll get there in the end. Phew!!!! YEEHAA 💪❤️👍
