Hi Bill, Your examples of the effects caused by different filing/grinding techniques, confirms my experience. You mentioned the rail wear having a major effect on the coarse of the bar, this is a factor that slips by the average sawyer, especially one who does not straighten/ grind, squeez etc...but has the saw shop take care of their bars. I would like to mention a factor that has not been mentioned, which is related to the rail wear, in the opposing bearing surface of the matching chain. That is that the chain when run on uneven bar rails will also wear the chain surfaces on one side more than the other. If an operator runs a new chain for a lengthy time on a bar with rails worn on one side more than the other, the chain will not run true when switched on to a bar with true rails. I have experienced this to the point of throwing riggin fits. It is possible to run a brand new bar, with a new chain and force it to cut circles ( an exaggeration lol) but you know what I mean, so this is how the factors you showed, can effect the outcome of your cutting. Thank you for your time and efforts to make other peoples lives a lot better and happy. Keep on Buckin and Grinin!!! Mark

I've Cut all my life and didn't know that about chain slopping go from 73 gauge to 75 gauge to tighten the chain on the bar.. My saw shops have never said nothing about that , fact is none of my cutting partners know that.. I do grind my bar rail to true them off and on. The saw I use the most just turned 10 years old.. Very interesting .. Demo proves your point.. Well done..

I was 11, Dad 31 yrs my senior; he bucking large red oak log into firewood with little Mac 210 with 20" bar; "Its rainbowing!" He filed, still rain bowed. He filed again, still drifting a curve. I noticed one side of bar bottom was BLUE. It had been run while felling without bar oil! It was the bar that was more damaged on one side. Flipped the bar and it cut well.

Great demo Buckin'! At least it didn't come out of the big log on the same side it went in! I feel like my worst ones want to do that sometimes. If I get crooked and binding I still dummy up trying to figure it out. Always think first I must have hit something. Then I think I filed rakers wrong. Then I think maybe the bar is grooved out and needs ground or filed. Then I think the bottom of the links is worn screwy on one side. Maybe the bar is bent a little. I've got to get the light and the sun right when I stare at this stuff. If the 'working corner' isn't a sharp point and I can see anything on the sharpened edge shining back at me I know it's definitely time to sharpen. If that's not it, then any and all of that other stuff comes into play. I do think if the drivers are sloppy in the bar groove anything out of whack left and right shows up even worse. It will pull and cut to the side it is sharper on even more. Thanks for making me think and re-think this whole crooked thing! Be kind.

Good Square Ground chain is so nice to cut with. Not only does good square ground cut more efficiently, it's smoother too, a round file simply can't make a true clean corner. Truly amazing to see just how crooked that cut. I believe at 25:46 I could even see the chain oscillating, I bet it would be something to see in super slow motion. I'm thoroughly enjoying this series of videos. Be KIND everyone.

All I've ever cut is oak mostly and I ran into this same result when I grabbed the wrong file 9ne time...that smaller C smooths out better especially in hard dry oak

Great info. Thanks for posting. It sure looks like your rakers (depth gauges) are much lower than new chain or even than my file gauge gets mine. Data I can find says the cutter should be 0.025 higher than the raker. You should show one of the anti kick back chains they put on most saws sold in the US and show how to grind down those anti kick back links, I'm sure that is a big area of confusion for a lot of new saw users. I use a choke line and prusik to the bridge on my saddle.

Thanks for the reply, Marty! When you say "choke line", are you using a running bowline? I'm investigating the use of an adjustable friction saver, but not sure what route to go.

I use a steel carabiner (for speed) around the tree since it slightly side loads it but a bowline would do just fine too. Then just a 30"eye-eye prusik cord to a carabiner and bridge. Loosen it and hold it with my flipline while decending then tend it tight below my flipline once ive reached the next work position. If you use your climbing line for it its easy to toss a figure8 or rope wrench etc under the prusik and belay out on it. Makes the transition quick and easy

Need an in depth lesson on Rip chains AND sharpening rip chains, where do I measure the angle from. I'm about to learn the chain saw mill, n building a cabin with my son. I understand 15 degrees, but others say flat across, some want to cut the tooth in half, wth, you seem to know what you're doing. Thanks, great lessons.

With all due respect , it's very hard to believe that this many people think this guy knows what hes talking about. No ppe, improper grip on the top handle. uses the wrong size round file , worried about tooth material behind and lower than the raker. My Lord, Good Luck dude.
