I had to get my 13year old son to help me hold my 1-43 mac and I tell you. I was on the front porch and when it fired up I looked around and I saw my 15year old daughter standing at the bottom of the steps so I turned the saw off to see what was going on and it was so loud he ran inside the house and she ran outside the house. I laughed my butt off. I don't know what the old boy did to it when he rebuilt it but all he said was he had about 600bucks in the engine and it has so much compression I can pick it up by the cord and not drag it across the floor. I love it. Thanks Buckin for inspiring us to do cool things

I'll go to the grave loving my Stihl saws, but there's something very special about a plaid clad gent running machines from the 70s, I mean at the end if the day, nothing beats old school in this digital age.

I can tell you after logging hardwood in the south that the 500i are man killers.. they lock up to much and lack far too much power compared to the 572 576 and the even the 372xp I found after using a number of saws if your going to go sthil I would really go with the ms 462 had far better performance in the wood and was also noticeably lighter in weight .. but honestly anymore after falling hard wood for the last few years that the 390xp and the 395xp are probably some of the best saws in the world… not telling you what to choose there are a lot of good saws from all company’s in the world out there really depends on size of wood your cutting just be leery with the 500i… it’s put two of my friends in the ground… and have heard of several more loggers here in the south having major issues with them that has caused some serious harm to the operator.. Sthils make some really good saws and there are a lot of better choices out there then the 500i

I bought a Skil Saw gas chain saw with a 16 inch bar in 1972 for $150 new. It cut fire wood for four to five families for 25 years, mostly oak laps and some slab piles. I could cut and load a long bed pick up load and drive away in under an hour back then. It was tuned just like you showed for years and never needed a rebuild. Amazing. Phillips Chain saw was the McCulloch dealer in Troy, N.C. and was wonderful man full of love and hope after going through WWII hell. There was never a saw he didn’t live to repair. He kept all the local loggers going and also sold Snapper mowers. All his customers got pick up and delivery service to at no extra charge. RIP E. J. Phillips.

New here to the channel, and would just like to give a huge thank you. My dad had a McCulloch Super Pro 60 that he bought new in 76’. I never did see it run, just sat on a shelf for most of my childhood so I asked him if I could try to work on it. Just went for it, cleaned up the carburetor, changed the plug and many pulls later she fired but I couldn’t get it to stay running. With the content I got from this video, the thing is running like a top, and I’m having a great time running the saw. Felt so good to bring what I thought was going to be a boat anchor back to life. Really appreciate the videos, thank you!

This info is golden Buckin. I've always thought I can tune descent except for one particular chainsaw, a small 450 Husqvarna that has given me frickin sleepless nights, tunes great until I start cutting and it looses power and boggs, tried everything, nothing worked. Your insight on backing the idle screw out of the equation to first get the Low idle dialed then bringing Idle back till it just kisses the rpm's was it. I wish I could deliver you a case a beer. Thanks Much! I've picked up a PM700 and PM1010 since I started watching your videos. I can see myself falling into Gear Acquisition Syndrome with the Macs.

Great video Buckin', you always seem to take me back in time. Nice editing as well my friend! My dad would constantly be adjusting the jets on his old Lombard, but he would have a hard time keeping the screwdriver on the screw while he was running the saw himself. He was a firm believer of adjusting the saw in the wood as well. So, he would call me over from what I was doing and say "run the saw so I can adjust it." Then would get mad at me because I wasn't holding it still. I would think to myself, (I wouldn't dare say it out loud), "I'm cutting wood, how do I hold it still?" Ah, great memories, man, we cut and split a lot of wood back in the day. Stay safe friends!

Thanks Buckin'! My saw's been bogging down at full throttle and struggling in the wood, so I've been watching tuning videos. When I found yours, I knew I'd finally learn the *right* way to do it! 😉 Totally makes sense to do the final tune when it's actually under load doin' its thing. And thanks for saying why you hold the starter rope when shutting it down-I've been wondering that for a long time but hadn't thought to ask-now I know & will start doing that myself! Thanks again and keep up the great work. We SO love & appreciate you. 🙌🤠

Glad I found this one buckin. been a bit since I put my ear on that 4 strockin sound. I was taught as a kid and was confident I still had it but this video put the sound right back in my ear. Just bench tuned my CS-400 after a muffler mod but it got late on me so I haven't got to sink it into any wood yet. Shes a screamer and im positive my neighbors wouldn't like it. I'll dial her in tomorrow. Thanks again friend all the knowledge you share is greatly appreciated........also I loved your comment (I'd rather make stumps) I feel the same. Maybe I just love the work involved bringing a big tree down limping it bucking it splitting it then stacking it. It also give me a chance to teach my kids a few things and let them see hard work wont kill ya. 5 girls 1 boy and they all get right in there with me.

I just stumbled on this video seeing you holding the old McCulloch saw. Exactly the same saw my dad used when I was a kid 70 years ago and the saw I still used up until about ten years ago. Loved it, but it's been sitting on the floor of my shop gathering dust and dirt ever since. I never did really know how to tune it, but know I'm going to see if I can kick start it and get that baby going again. Thanks Buckin, that old saw has some real memories of me and my dad, and years later me and my son cutting, chopping and stacking wood together. BTW, I loved your enthusiasm while you were making the video. Many thanks for this.

I have to write. Like, have to. Me and powersaws were 2 different worlds (I study medicine, and lead a pretty sedentary life when in the city where my faculty is). Had to buy a saw this year and decided on a cheap 4.8 HP one to use for 2 seasons at least to get to know these beautiful beasts before I buy a proper one (had the feeling, and was right, I'd love using one). Assembled it, started it, used it, felt weird, like underpowered, like it was choking...searched your channel and found the vid where you tune that McHardToRemember saw...heard how it acted, listend to what you explained, went and tuned my by hearing (the Low screw). Thought that the idle could just throw me off so I unscrewed it so it barely moves the throttle. That was that. But alas, a worm was planted "Just by hearing...no way thats ok, go find a video where he explains it more precisely". Enter today - found this video, found out you actually recommend the idle screw thing I did. Counted the turns on the L screw, turns out its 1 and 1/4 for this carb too. Turns out it was just the same position as yesterday, by hearing as I counted today. So, again, thanks. Like, thanks to a "friend whom I'll never have the pleasure of shaking his hand". Didn't expect my eyes too get all watery over a god damn chainsaw video, but here I am. Probably because you really share what others keep selfishly...knowledge and love. That's to be cherished. Anyway, thanks a lot, and all the best. You made one guy a lot happier today.

Thank you for making this video Buckin'. I'm getting good at repairing power saws but when it comes to tuning them I'm still a newb. I have an old Echo cs 301 that giving me fits at the moment. So I'll be paying special attention to this video and I'm sure I'll be watching it over and over a few times. Anyway, thanks for all you do buddy. You'd be a great guy to meet. set the L and H to 1 turn each....these are Base Settings, so the saw will run....then tune from there. But Double check online and make sure Echo is 1 turn for base settings.....most saws are. Also you might have "safety caps" installed from the factory, which ONLY allow for fine tuning....you MIGHT have to remove those to get back to base settings. If that doesn't work, you got issues......carb or crank seals maybe.
