Good job Mike. I accidentally discovered that truing wet Yew branch wood into blanks and sealing the ends stopped any cracking. Now I do that with any wet branch wood I get and it works for them all. I have never had a failure apart from one tiny, hairline, crack in a 30cm Yew blank that was a couple of millimetres deep but I think I may have missed it when turning the piece originally. Best Wishes, Brendan.

You're videos are always so informative.. as well and enjoyable to watch. But I have a question ( I don't turn wood ) are natural edges more difficult to turn? It seems to me it would be kinda jarring and the blade leaves the wood, then makes contact again... but I have no idea. It is very beautiful either way.
@MikeHolton2 ай бұрын
Hi Mega, thanks and yes they are harder to turn, like you thought you are turning a lot of fresh air waiting for the wood to come back round, it can be jarring and you need to keep your fingers well out the way 😃

Two video's into your channel as a new subscriber and this is certainly two for two on success! I've learned so much in just the two videos I am sincerely looking forward to more! I haven't given much though to drying wet turned wood so you are definitely opening my eyes to a whole new way of looking at things. The other video you had the open grain wax sealed. I assume this is to prevent the wood from drying too fast? is the seal left open to some degree to allow some drying or are things sealed as much as possible. Somehow I suspect the more of your videos I watch the more answers I will get (and likely more questions haha). Thanks for sharing!

Thanks so much Perry, the wax seal is to help the end grain from drying too quickly and splitting. I have not sealed this one as I did not feel it would be needed, time will tell if I was right. All the best, Mike
