I bought a lathe about a year ago. I thought finding wood to turn was going to be an issue for me, but just keeping an open eye and feeling comfortable to ask has kept me stocked. Many people don't know what kind of wood they have and don't really care, unless they are woodworkers themselves and even the woodworkers will share.

Stunning. I love your comments about how you get wood for your projects. I am relatively new to turning but lucky for me I am already tripping over bowl blank material in the yard. In May of this year we had a tornado rip thru our little town. I was out helping the neighbourhood with my chainsaw and tree climbing skills. In many cases people just gave me the wood for helping them get the sometimes 30 inch diameter black walnut trees off of their roof or car. We have a sawmill at the house so some made it to lumber and other pieces like crotch and burls made it to the bowl blank pile. We have a pressure pot being delivered today so I cannot wait to try it out on a piece like the one you just finished. Keep up the good work. I still plan on dropping by one day to see your shop. cheers

Wow, this is another gorgeous bowl. The pearl red is so delicious looking. Putting it with the apple pieces, then turning this. A dynamic duo. I never thought turning wood with cut off branches, that so many would use in smoking meat. I absolutely love, love this bowl. You walk us through everything. I learned to make stained glass years ago. That is cool. This is amazing. Thank you again for sharing this artistry.

I have two apple trees that have been in my yard since my parents planted them in the 60's. They are in bad shape and I will be taking them down to make something for my kids who grew up eating the apples off these trees. This post was an inspiration, as have a few others as to what I'll do with the trees, especially the smaller limbs.. I've also got a few neat cracks that I think will be awesome filled with gold inside dark blue hypershift epoxy. Thanks, Jim.

@@SpragueWoodturning I'll send you pics of my "journey". I can see light through a knot in the trunk of one of the trees, and that was what caught my eye with this turn. I'm trying to find ways to use less epoxy by using "fillers". Maybe even PVC pipe and fittings.

Don’t have any and I’m not sure if you know it or not, but the branches from the walnut tree that’s the same as the ones I used are in fact whiteish in color with just a tiny black center. Thanks for watching

It’s mainly because of the branches. It’s a good fitting form for them. Thanks

@@SpragueWoodturning have you ever thought about expanding foam as a filler for some of your larger pieces? Use that instead of rice in a bag. Not sure if it would work, it might melt while curing, have you ever tried it?

I like this piece a lot more than I expected to from the thumbnail. In the main video the piece looks more rounded than the thumbnail which I like, and the red pearl I think is lovely.

I saw the thumbnail to this ages ago and thought it was so pleasing to look at that I would "save it" as a treat to myself. It seriously did not disappoint - such a beautiful piece. Incredible colour choice for those apple branches and almost a fairytale like feel with the shape you've worked it into. Just beautiful. I will definitely be giving this one another watch or two just to experience it

beautiful, I have been enjoying your skillful and creative works for some time now. It makes me cringe to see all the century old trees go to waste with destruction of yardsites due to agriculture expansion here in the prairies. I am looking forwardto your next project.
