I don't tape my puzzles, or glue them, but I do buy some really cheap frames from walmart and some poster board. I flip the puzzle and without doing anything to them and I lay the poster board behind it and sandwich the back of the frame back on. The friction from the poster board keeps the puzzle from sliding around, and you can switch the puzzle in the frame at any time. I have several on my walls currently, and since I'm in a college dorm, everything is temporary :) I love looking at my puzzles every day when I get up, but with a growing collection, I'm getting more and more used to switching them out each week or so. This is one of my favorite things to do as I hate the permanence of gluing and I'm scared to damage the puzzles, but the frame method works really well for me!

I made my very first 1000 piece puzzle last week (a golf one) and I used your taping technique. I used 2 inch painters tape and did it twice. I then mounted the project on a hard foam board and placed a hanger in behind. It looks amazing on the wall and as Karen says, I can take it apart in the future if I want to do it again. No glue, no steaks, no super glossy mess. I love it and thanks ❤️.

I tape all my puzzles with painters tape. For me personally I don’t see the point to undo a puzzle no matter how much I enjoyed doing it because I’m not a full time puzzler and I’m not immortal either hehe. There are so many great puzzles out there waiting to be put together that for me it doesn’t make sense to waste time in redoing an old one. I do love the idea of the washi tape, but yes you’re right it’s not financially viable, especially because you wouldn’t be able to see it. I will try the contact paper, I guess it would work better for me as like I said I glue them permanently. Thank you for your post!

@AsiAzzy

I also don't have a reason to take apart a puzzle. I just wanted to glue them somehow (puzzle glue was a mistery to me, also expensive and rare). So i've taped them on the back. It works so and so. The puzzle is not rigid by any strech and any bending will lead to pieces falling. Also glue from a tape is a hit and miss. Paper tape seems to hold well and long. Packing tape workes ok initialy but fades in about a year or two and just lets go of the pieces. Exterior grade tape works ok but there is still a lot of movement in the pieces. After trying with spray glue and some sheets of paper on the back (coverage of the spray is not uniform enough, some pieces need some touchups. My absolute best method and also the cheapest (i avoid puzzle glues that go on the face of the puzzle), is wood glue and a sheet of paper. So i have a lot of scrap A0 paper (technical drawings) and pour about 100 grams of wood glue in the center of the paper and spread it out with a large spreading card (the automotive bodywork type, 150mm wide, steel flexible). Spread the wood glue on that paper, and then flip it onto the puzzle (the back side of it of course). Press it well. I like to flip it again to rest face up while drying so no wood glue will creep and seep to the front of the puzzle. This wood glue is by far the cheapest i can get and the most strurdy construction. Glue is present in the puzzle piece joints as well. And the wood glue bond to the paper and cardboard very well, impreganting them and hardening them. It feels like a heavy solid piece of cardboard. Price is 5euro/L for wood glue, even cheper if you buy by the bucket or gallon. I bet is going to cover 10-20k pieces or more. I'm skeptical about puzzle glues. 1st they are expensive (i've only ever seen ravensburger at 10euro 200ml for about 2000-4000pieces), and second idk how i would not leve streaks or add gloss on top, or any other modification. I like the puzzle look as it is so never tried dedicated puzzle glues.

If you guys are planning on taping puzzles for long periods of time or are worried about any cardboard peeling off of the back, you can just pre-stick your tape! Stick your painter's tape down to any clean surface once or twice to take away some of its glue, once you do this they become about as sticky as a post-it note. Definitely sticky enough to keep your puzzles together, but not enough to damage them! And it's better to have less glue on your tape if you plan to leave your puzzles taped together for long periods of time. Hope this helps! Happy puzzling everybody!

This video has been sitting in my saved videos for a while and I finally decided to check it out. I quickly decided that I don't care about tapings puzzle to temporarily display though I do like the idea another commented stated in putting the finished puzzle in a frame with glass cover which will hold it together. But mostly I don't care about saving puzzles to do later. I am in my upper 60's with a couple dozen finished puzzles that are glued and will display. Then there are another 20 odd puzzles a few of which I will display temporarily. Maybe half of these puzzles are classic paintings from the Renaissance to the impressionist which are my favs. To each his own.

Karen, if you overlap the painter's tape like you did and pull from the side you first put down it will come off in one piece (including the vertical pieces you put on last). I haven't taped any puzzles before (but now I will) but I know that's how this tape works because I actually use it when I paint and I pull it off when I'm done in one big piece. People don't use the green or yellow tape because they have stronger glue and you might rip more of the back of the puzzle.

She’s not been able to puzzle, between feeling terrible and her cancer treatments messing with her vision. But she knows I’m going stir crazy, so she sent me a stack of puzzles. I wanted to give her the first puzzle back, finished, with a new copy of the puzzle to do herself. Like a, “Hey, I did this, but you or we can do this when you get better,” gesture. But I’ve had an issue finding it so far, so I think this idea of taping is a good idea. I’m not messing up the puzzle that way. 🤔

Usually the longer you leave any tape before removal the firmer the hold and harder to remove and there is a warning on painters tape re long term. The exception is probably your average sticky tape. Probably a good solution for temporary display. The suggestion of warming the tape sounds good to A while ago I did read about a puzzle conserver which allowed the puzzle to be protected and together but was also light enough to enable the puzzle to be taken apart if wanted. I can't recall the brand as I had no interest in hanging puzzles.

I liked the blue tape, I may stick with that for awhile, lol, but it seems to work pretty good! I enjoyed watching your channel!👍

I wonder if using a bit of heat from a blow dryer while removing the tape would help reduce the cardboard loss or if that would just result in glue from the tape being left on the cardboard. I suppose the temperature would need to be just right. I don't even puzzle but have found your videos intriguing the last few days.

This is such an easy method! I'm going to try this with the velcro 3m strips to hang it. Also if you want to give it a clean finished look, you could give it a little frame with wood moldings or a thin strip wood.

Amazing video, what about larger puzzle sets, like 1000 or more pieces? Because of increasing amount of pieces the puzzle weight increase too. Great content, love to see more and more colorful and unique puzzles:)

I like all the jigsaw methods..glueing, the tape, and using just frames with mattes or backing. Regardless they all get frames. But I do love the clips idea. 👍 TY.

I have different sized frames. I slide the completed finished puzzle onto the glass. The put on the backing and place onto the frame ❤

Great job on presenting several techniques that don’t permanently change the puzzle. I don’t glue puzzles because it isn’t my decorating style. You should try diamond painting.

@@KarenPuzzles Diamond painting is a bit like puzzling but your puzzle pieces are small rhinestones. They have to be put on a picture grid (which has a sticky surface) on the right spot (that's the "puzzling" part, but you get a guide) to create a shiney and beautiful picture that catches all the light reflections and sparkles.

These are medium quality puzzles with standard cardboard on the back. I wonder if you would have better or worse results with a higher quality puzzle? I think it's possible you'd have even less cardboard peel up, but I'd worry that a smoother surface would make the tape stick less.

Might try the painters tape with a vintage wooden puzzle I have. Fingers crossed it doesn’t peel up any of the paint on the backing or the board. 🤞🏻

I wonder if you used a craft sealant on the back before taping it if the cardboard would come out in better shape?

I framed a few puzzles with absolutely no glue, I bought a picture frame that fits the puzzle size exactly and just put the puzzles in there, so the back of the frame and the glass front keep them together just because physics (luckily the Ravensburger 1000 piece puzzles are the standard format of 50x70cm and it's easy to find a frame for that)

I am new to puzzles but I have used Clear Packaging tape on the backs of my puzzles before framing, but the frames are expensive especially for some of the odd size puzzles I have done. I was looking for a different way to hang them and the binder clips seem like a winner! I have not tried removing the tape yet but I will try at some point.

I love the comparison and the after-removal effect! I want to hang my 4D Game of Thrones puzzle, so I can't use frame for it obviously and don't want to use glue as well as I want them to be easily taken apart (relocation or just re-doing). Those methods are perfect fit. I'll experiment also with low tack painters tape to minimaze the damage. Have you tried using clear laminate foil? Is it removable? How much does it peel off? I am still wondering how I am gonna "glue" those foam puzzle pieces to the paper ones? Anyone has any ideas? One way I thought of is double-sided low tack clear tape (could someone recommend any low tack one?). The other might be putty. Do you guys think putty won't leave traces and stains on the paper jigsaw?

I once had to preserve an antique family document. It's a very flimsy piece of paper, over a century old, worn and torn. I ordered two pieces of acrylic of the right size, put the paper between them, and "clipped" the two pieces together at the edges with transparent PVC profiles. It was pretty cheap, and the result is practically indestructible and looks great, too. It takes like 10 seconds to open it, if I ever need to access the paper, and 10 seconds to put it back. If it was for display, I'd get the UV-protection acrylic for the front.

I've never had a problem after applying the tape of flipping it over and not have pieces hold. I use duck tape for mine because I don't take them apart after. I also after applying the tape press the tape down on the tape applying pressure to every piece, and most times, I can also see the outline on the back. I make the puzzle on 1 foam board. When completed, transfer it to a custom foam board I made for flipping so that it stays together better with less pressure as I flip it over to save it. I used to glue it, but I've mostly converted to taping the puzzles together now. In high school I watched a friend build for his mom a wood board on a lazy susan for puzzling, But you get the same effect either turning the foam board or moving spots around it to work on it. I use a variety of trays for sorting pieces as I do the border for the puzzle. I like trays that stack nicely and are medium sized. If they are too small you need alot of them, to big and one accident you have more to flip back over or figure out if you lost them or not. Well this is a good start of my tips n tricks so far. I love the collander idea from another video to get off the puzzle dust.

i accidentally glued my puzzle pieces to the floor before and i never wanted to glue my 2nd puzzle ever again. i just directly put them into frames. :D i dont really have much good boards to work on new puzzles, so i use the back of the puzzle frame boards every time when i have a new puzzle to work on. and i will keep the puzzle in place and keep them in the puzzle box without destroying them. like in layers. haha

I was planning to display my puzzle in just a frame but I feel overtime gravity and the puzzle will droop and separate. Im going to try painters tape over glue and I hope the tape won't have any negative effects in the long run.
