You need to hang your clothes so as to avoid peg-marks (aka peg-nipples or hanging-nipples), and whilst also avoiding fold-lines or damage to the clothes, such as sun-bleaching along the fold-line. There are many ways to hang your clothes in order to get them dry, but some ways are definitely better than others. There is always a reason, so if you understand the reason why things are done a particular way, you might remember the benefits of changing the way that you hang your clothes on an outside (or inside) clothesline.
In this video I also explain why it is so much better for your clothes to dry naturally, outside as opposed to placing them directly in the dryer. Your clothes will smell better, they will be naturally sanitized by the sun and the sun will remove any excess cleaning products. Your clothes will also be easier to fold.
Is this how you hang your washing? Thank you for watching.

I just moved to Western Australia for a few months and I'm not used to air drying my laundry. This is super useful to know, thank you!

Thank you, Katherine, for your lovely comment. Air-drying clothes (imo) is so much nicer. Everything smells so fresh. Glad you got some useful tips. I also have a vid that is about how to hang Queen and King sheets that make it very easy to fold. It's the best method ever. All the best and enjoy your time in WA!

LOVE using clotheslines & have for decades. Something else about making sure sleeves are pulled out....if they're left tucked into the shirt, they'll dry wrinkled. I hang my husband's underwear by the waistband but I don't fold it over the line. I pin the waistband flat to the line . This way it's a single layer of fabric. Definitely agree w/you about folding clothes over the line & then getting sun bleached. You are RIGHT about dryers pulling fabric apart....that's why there's so much lint in the lint trap ! Line dried laundry lasts twice as long as it does when always dried in a dryer. And yes ! the sun sanitizes, deodorizes & even bleaches. 100% agree w/you about needing less detergent, no need for fragrance beads, etc. So glad you made this video !

Thank you very much. It really surprised me when I learnt that many people do not dry their clothing on washing lines. I've got 4 sons and their clothes smell so much fresher and cleaner when hung on the line. And thank you, I will try your pegging method for underwear. Oh and clothes are so much easier to fold when hung on line, compa to being in the dryer. Thanks for watching and for your comment 😊

@@ActiveDomesticsCleaning There are many places in the U.S. that don't allow clothes lines. I couldn't stand to live where clotheslines weren't allowed ! I agree w/you....laundry smells so much fresher & cleaner when hung on the line. I live in a small town where it's OK to have clotheslines. Some people view hanging laundry outdoors as low class....some think laundry will get dirty if hung outdoors. I don't agree, tho.

@Pat Wagner Yes, I was very shocked when I learnt that some places in US don't allow washing lines... even in places with lots of sun and fresh air. I can't understand it myself, but I bet they sold a lot of dryers and electricity. Hopefully many people re- think about this, as nothing better than clothes does from a line. Cheers and enjoy your day. 😊

Im from nz and i remember a friend of mine coming to nz for the first time she couldn't get over how every household had a clothesline and we dried our clothes that way whenever we wanted to 😂 then i saw in some parts of the states people were excited to be allowed to have clotheslines! I was thinking that's weird had they been using dryers all this time when it's free to dry clothes outside? There were video's and blogs coming out on how to dry clothes for free (obvious air drying) how to make clotheslines, how to hang washing. I can't imagine being without a clotheslines. When i moved to my new home i done away with the old clotheslines and made my own suitable for my big family even repositioned it to get the most out of the sun during winter. We don't like dryers so i made use of our covered deck area for rainy day's and have made a simple clotheslines there as well because washing is neverending 😂😂 Loved your video coz I'm over here like hmmm let's see how other people be hanging the t shirts 😂 then i was like this a kiwi gurrrllll im sure of it she sound like a kiwi to me l0l anyways i guess we still lucky here to have clotheslines, water tanks and chickens running in the backyard etc love from home chur xx

Hi Miz 👋 Thank you for your lovely comment. You are correct. I'm originally from NZ but lived in Qld for a very long time. 😘 I, too, was completely shocked to hear that some people in USA are not permitted to hang their clothes outside, or that some deem it a dirty way of drying clothes. (The dryer manufacturers had some powerful advertising campaigns, it seems .. I've got 4 big sons and their clothes smell so much cleaner and fresher when hung outside. I have the line on the side of the house, but also use a camping line. It's like a mini hills hoist that is perfect as it is sturdy but holds a lot. It also means I can chase the sun around, as we also have a big family and heaps of washing. Thank you for your comment and have a great weekend 😊

I always hang socks by the toe and alongside one another so I can pair them as I take them off the line; hang tee shirts under the arm so that if there are any peg marks they’re hidden and hang trousers that require ironing by the hem so that the thickest parts get to flap about in the air more

Hi Denise. Sometimes different methods suit different climates. I don't hang socks by the toe part, as that is the thickest part and therefore some thick work socks would not dry as quickly. We live in a hot, sunny place and I used to hang my tshirts like you described, but did not like the line mark it would often leave, particularly with some fabrics. I'm also keen to avoid sun bleaching marks in my clothes, but then I often leave my washing out overnight. Thank you for watching and contributing 😊

I enjoyed the video. I hang my underwear upside down pinning the legs to the line, same with my jean I hang them by the bottoms of the legs or the cuff. I don't know if that is correct but they dry.

Thanks Keith. There are many "right ways" to hang clothing but we sometimes need to adapt depending on the fabric and the style, eg if something gets peg marks where it will be obvious. Thank you for sharing your ways. I do hang some pants like you do, and it's a great way as the heavier, thicker part of the jeans are hanging down. Most of my jeans are thin and not real denim, so not too thick, but yes, I agree, that's a really good way. Thank you for watching and have a good one 👍 😊

Why not put a tshirt straight on a hanger… less handling… straight in form … no clips or foldings

That's definitely a great option but my t-shirts don't get hung up. Mine go in a draw, so it's quicker for me to do it this way. 😊

Hi there. We have a very small backyard and so moved the washing line to the side of the house. It does get the morning sun, but you're correct... given we have long hot summers here, it is good to not have full sun all the time, as it can sun bleach your clothes. Have a good one.
