Great explanation ..... What I do after is after torqueing the nut is put a dab of finger nail polish on top of nut (12 O"clock) on front and rear axle, so during my pre ride inspection I can see if that nut has changed position.

Thank you Rocco for another excellent video. I did mine last week and I was using the wire alignment tool to measure the index holes on swing arm to center of nuts on axle (this is what book says for the 98.) I had a problem with this because the castle nut on the caliper side sticks out further than the nut on belt side. So when I would put tool from center of nut to the index hole I was unable to get an accurate measurement for either side. I never thought about measuring the adjusting bolts on back like you did. That is soooo much easier. Thank you! I told my wife, I would not own a Harley if it wasn't for you...lol

just want to say I love your videos. I actually came here today looking for the reason why my rear belt drive bolts broke off. Actually two of them broke off right in the center. The other half is still in the wheel. I was riding home from the pharmacy luckily I was only going about 30 miles an hour when I started hearing some clanking. I pulled over didn't see anything but when I got home under further inspection I saw where the damage had been done. I just bought a 2006 Softail Deluxe. I can't believe that bolts just break off like that

A couple of points From Harley technical data. Tension of the drive belt should always occur with the motorcycle on the jiffy (kick)stand or in an upright front wheel lock (stand), allowing the rear tire to contact the ground. Second, testing of belt tension should occur with 10 lbs of force applied against the lower portion of the drive belt, at the mid point between the transmission and rear wheel. Third the adjustment should be made with the vehicle unladen (no extra weight)

Just to add, read the service manual, what you state is correct in certain models and incorrect on others, I think the key point from the video is ensuring the distance on the bolts adjusted is the same to ensure the back wheel is perfect distance for both sides.

This was really helpful for me. Question for you: When I get to the step of tightening the axle nut to torque spec, the nut does not begin to provide any resistance or tightness until the belt sprocket nuts are in contact with the swing arm (meaning the back tire won't spin without rubbing/colliding). As a result, I cannot tighten to 60-65 foot pounds. I have my spacers and hardware positioned according to the service manual diagram. Any suggestions for where or what to investigate as the cause?
@TwoWheelRocco
@TwoWheelRocco 4 ай бұрын
I believe it's safe to say you took the whole wheel apart and there's something going on. with the wrong spacer you need to really look it over and try again. And make sure your adjusters are facing the right way. If you take a close look, they offset when they go into your sway arm, which will cause a lot of problems.

Excellent video, sir. Perhaps I am missing something: 'Common sense' would dictate that tightening a tensioner nut that runs perpendicular to the rear axle would push the pulley closer to the drive sprocket, which would in theory loosen the belt, not tighten it. How exactly do the tensioners work?
@TwoWheelRocco
@TwoWheelRocco 11 ай бұрын
Happy to help, That adjustment rod is connected to a washer type connect to your axle.. So as you tightened it, it actually pulls it back. which puts tension on the belt. I hope I explain that well.. Thank you for watching and all your kind words bigben. Ride safe and have a great day.

Hi Rocko, I noticed on my sportster that the left band tensioner nut is separated from the fork. Should I turn it until it butts against the fork again? I think they left it badly tightened as a result of the rear tire being changed in the workshop, although it hasn't given me any problems.

I have an 03 Sportster and my back tire is rubbing my belt. I have a Metzler 150 on it which I have also seen on other sportys. Have you ever had that problem? Right now I'm pretty sure my wheel is out of alignment but it's actually (looking from the back) to the left so if I straighten it, it will rub worse. Right? No? I just had these tires put on so this is new to me. Also when coasting it feels like it's not coasting freely. Could that be due to the rotor rubbing against the pads bc it's out of alignment?

Well it turns out that I had a bad wheel bearing on the right side. When ordering new parts I noticed the diagram had a bearing spacer in the hub of the solid wheel. My bike did not have that. Now I need to find out if certain bikes only need the “outside the wheel” spacers. The sold wheel seems to have been machine to hold the bearings so I don’t know if I even need one in the center.
@TwoWheelRocco
@TwoWheelRocco 9 ай бұрын
Yes, there would be a slight spacer outside of your pulley. make sure you're adjuster is on the right side. you'll see it can gets funny if it's on the opposite side. it will not line up correct so just flip it a lot of times when you're doing your real wheel that might not install prop. Thank you for letting us know and I'm happy you figured it out.@@SteveDunnBand

But do you think If i baby It and be careful i can be ok to ride it for a little? I have to ride it from the suburbs to the city to pick up a new belt because my car is in the shop.

Happy to help Martin. The manual will make it complicated so you bring it in this is not rocket science adjusting about make sure you have some play and it's all good. I've seen bikes come out of the dealership sloppy belts. I seen bikes come out of the dealership rock hard belts just use your common sense. There's a gauge on on the bottom of the, that will help you use a ruler. Make sure both sides are even and you'll have no problem. Thank you for all your support Martin. Hey Rocco, question for you. Whenever I set my belt slack, at the end of the process torquing my axle nut changes my belt slack. Tightens it up enough to be too tight, is that normal? Not a big problem but kind of annoying to go back and slightly loosen up the axle adjusters. 2000 Hugger is the bike, thanks for the help Rocco.
