Well, I tried it this way and I couldn't get the brake cylinders to compress satisfactorily, so I did what my mechanic suggested and removed the two 12 point-bolts to get the calipers off. I compressed the cylinders with a c-clamp and reassembled the whole thing. Took me about 45 minutes. Not a hard job at all if you can't do it the way shown here. BTW: The pads at the H-D parts desk were $110. Brembo. You get clean new center bolts and new clips. My old pads lasted me all of 12,600 miles. We'll see how long the Brembos last.

Good video...looks simple. However, on several occasions you mentioned to collapse "them." What do you mean and how do you do it? Also, how did you clean the pins? Adding that info would have covered all the bases for rookies like me 😁. Thanks for the video.
@TwoWheelRocco

When you remove the pads you will see the pistons inside the caliper, collapse with a screwdriver. you will see what you need to do when you take your pads out. The new pads are thicker so you need to make more room to install the new pads. and as for the pin clean it with a wire brush or steel wool. If you have any questions just ask sorry about that, I should've showed this. Thank you for watching Rick. Ride Safe and have a great day.

I had to pull the rear caliper, 2010 Road King with what I'm assuming is the original factory rear air shocks. I could just barely grab the socket on the cross pin with 5mm ball driver, once I got it loose there was no way it was sliding past the rear shock. It wasn't bad, just two more fasteners and having the caliper off the bike made compressing the cylinders and installing the pads much easier. Everything is literally in the palm of your hand, lol.
@TwoWheelRocco

Happy all went well.. On the newer bikes, you can take the caliper off and be fully exposed. I know some of the shocks to getting away of the pen. It's a pain but easy enough just to pop that caliper off as you did. Thank you for the update on a 2010 Road King. Ride. Safe and have a great day.

I have a 2010 Road King, the cross pin is almost directly behind the rear shock. I could get the pin completely loosened using a ball head, but there was no way that the pin was coming out. I wiggled it every direction possible, no go. That left me with two choices, pull the caliper or pull the shock. I opted for the caliper, two bolts, lifts right out, you've got full access to everything so compressing the cylinders and installing the new pads and replacing the cross pin is a snap. The time you save installing everything with the caliper off makes up for any time lost with the two fasteners, imo. Next time I might pull the front calipers off too rather than fumble around by feel and touch.

Rocco, any idea of OEM pads would roughly get on mileage before I should start thinking of getting new pads,? Do they last 15K miles or 40K miles? Obviously depends on how rode, stop & go or highway miles, but some idea in general?
@TwoWheelRocco
@TwoWheelRocco 2 жыл бұрын
There's a lot that goes into that. I would take a flashlight and look at the pads from the front of your bike and if you got a 1/8 of pad right and left of rotor, looking at 1000 miles left. Front brake pads ware quicker than the rear. From the back of the bike with a flashlight look at the caliper to the right and left side of the rotor and see how thick the pad, That will give you an indication same 1/8 inch if it's less get new pads. Miles are very hard to dictate. Hope that helps, let us know how it works out. Thank you for watching.

I’ve never done pads on anything. With that being said, this will definitely sound like a dumb question. When you say collapse then with the screwdriver. Does that mean sticking them up there and spreading them out??

@@TwoWheelRocco Rocco…I did my pads this weekend. I feel stupid…that was to easy! Thanks for the video! I’m going to do everything to this bike that comes up until I get defeated. Happy to help. I would just recycle the brake fluid out of the master, pull it out. Don't touch nothing replace it with clean fluid, put it back together and let that fluid cycle threw. Do that every oil change and you will keep fresh fluid in your system without disturbing the ABS, which you'll end up at the dealer, you don't wanna do that. Thank you for watching and your support Road King rider. Let us know how it works out. Ride safe and have a great day. Remove fluid from master replace with new and put back together. Do not touch the handle. That's how you get air in the system, when there's no fluid in the master reserve Do not touch the handle.

@@TwoWheelRocco I successfully managed to get the Brake pads out, clean them and put them back real easy so thank you for this video :) . I have one question though. Happy all worked out well. As for that loop you go to any AutoZone or auto parts store it's just a little brake grease they sell them in little squares. You can put a dab on there just to make sure it slides back-and-forth. Nice and easy. Any questions just ask. Thank you for watching, and all your support.Pranavah, Ride safe and have a great day.
