How to Harmonize the Major Scale

Let's all learn how to create some of that nature beauty of musical harmony by adding notes together from the major scale. We're going to make chord scales by adding power chords to a root note in the key of G, then stepping it up into triads, and finally up into 7th chord. Easy music theory at its finest!

I feel like this may be one of the more important things a player can learn. To be able to go through these progressions without having to think much about it can open the guitar up like nothing else.

I found a video that taught where to find the 1-7 positions and their maj min qualities a little differently, but without a doubt this is one of the most important and fulfilling things I've learned in guitar theory and lessons. I wish more tube tutors would teach this. After learning this I was able to play most of the songs my church plays without looking up the chords. I listened to or remembered how it goes. Listened for the key. Tested out the 145 and got the jist of the song. By the next week I filled in the other straggler chords and boom. The rest is history. Thank you.

This was amazing... I've been making music for 18 years on and off but I never cared about music theory, now I'm getting into writing songs and you just made this thing so easy to understand for "already"-musicians but I think also for people who do not have a lot of knowledge about music.

I love your videos, the work you're doing is amazing. I'm learning a lot with your lessons but I started teaching myself how to play guitar just a few months ago and I'm having a hard time with the right technique to play scales, I mean a can play scales the same way you did with G major at 0:40, but I've seen that blues players use a different technique much faster to play the pentatonic scales, I didn't find any video explaining the right technique on youtube. Could you do a video about it?

@Matt_Burns
@Matt_Burns 7 жыл бұрын
You take each melody note and fit it into the definitive chords; the chords that define the scale, being the I IV & V. Everything in the major scale fits into the I IV or V. In C Maj------- C belongs to the I or IV with C With the root of C or 5th of F as melody note.----- D belongs to G major (V) using the 5th of G Maj------ E belongs to the C (I) with the 3rd of C------- F belongs to F (IV) with the Root as melody note----- G belongs to C (I) or G (V) with the 5th of C or root of G---- A belongs to F (IV) with 3rd as melody note----- B belongs to G (V) with the 3rd as melody note. That is how you actually harmonize the maj scale. Plural substitutes are used to control the bass and add a slightly different contour to the melody note.
