How to Harvest Bachelor's Buttons for your Cut Flower Garden // Northlawn Flower Farm

Today I'm sharing how to harvest bachelor's buttons! These flowers are also known as "cornflowers" and should be harvested right as they are about to crack open to 1/3 open. Make the initial cut deep into the central stem of the plant, above three sets of leaves. Make all additional cuts where the flower stem your cutting meets the main stem. Cut in the cool of the morning or evening with sterilized pruners and immediately place into cool water. You can expect a vase life of approx 5-7 days. These flowers benefit from floral preservative added into the water.

Yes definitely! I think it was two years ago I did a fall and spring sowing. The spring ones did not get as tall but still made great cuts!

Hi , I love your channel ! You made your garden much more enjoyable then mine , they are so lush and everything looks "upright" I m new to gardening and growing my cut flower garden too.. I m so inspired by your cut flower garden design ! My bachelors button tend to fall down after heavy rain or strong winds, many of my flowers do ..eg. larkspur . I already put up horizontal nettings to prevent that happening but maybe they are too tall , I guess I have to put up to 2 level sooner next year .... How do you keep all your plant so upright without supports?

I believe she chose that sight specifically bc of the height they grow to. She planted very close to that structure, I don't know if that is her house, shed, or garage. The structure is protecting the stems from direct wind. They were still, obviously seen in the video, being blown some, but the building/ structure is definitely lending some relief. She really does have an excellent garden design, I enjoy her garden very much. If I ever get my transplants in the ground, I will have to use support netting, I have no wind breaks, at all. Lots and lots of land to plant on, but nothing to break the pressure of the wind. I am looking forward to trying the support netting. I hope you have grat success with your garden.

I am seeing my buttons now and I thought they usually came early. So I have no idea. I am in 4a and we have some crazy weather. Maybe the late winter storm and heavy rain is slowing everything down. I am hoping to see blooms soon. I started so much inside and hail tore up all my strawflowers and I was a bit taken back.

You can use a bleach mixture that you soak the snips for at least one minute, but I prefer to just wipe mine down with isopropyl alcohol.

They can if you like! They also take well to being directly sown in very early spring.
