The issue with Listerine is that often it is far too harsh. I know that they now have alcohol free versions out. The main thing we don't want is to create a bacterial imbalance and an outgrowth of Thrush.

Hi DaVo :-) i had my tongue pierced 4mo back and it healed amazingly well; however, i've recently started changing out the bar and balls quite regularly (once to twice weekly), and wanted to ask something because i've encountered some surprising difficulty... sometimes, when i take the existing bar out to put in a new cuter style or something, i find it difficult to locate the fistula. for example yesterday, i tried to put my tongue in different positions (i.e. flat, arched, against my upper teeth, etc) just minutes after taking out the old one and it was SO HARD to do! i was like, there is no way it could have closed in 5 minutes, i must be doing something wrong... do you have any counsel related to what happened? i eventually got a new bar in and it's there now, nothing bled, but my tongue is sore and red around the piercing holes. i don't know what i did wrong. the piercing is totally healed and i have had this issue only twice before, i just want to know if there is a particular way to ensure the bar goes straight through without a lot of pushing and effort bc i feel it should be easy after 3 months of being pierced. please advise and thanks again, you are amazing! x

Hello Jenna. Well I'm guessing there might be a few causes. My first guess is the jewelry is externally threaded. Meaning that the end acts like a nut and screws on to the post. The threading is rough and can cause damage. In the future only buy internally threaded jewelry. The end or ball is like a little screw that threads into the post. This style has no rough exposed threading and will not damage the piercing as easily. The other possibility is that the jewelry is slightly thicker or the wrong gauge. Often lower end jewelry is marked 14g but in reality is closer to 13g. One last possible cause s that you just put it in at a weird angle. This is common with tongue piercing because it's hard to get the right angle inside your mouth. Also it's between two muscles and depending on the state of the muscles they can squeeze the piercing shut. Here's some hints. First off buy internally threaded jewelry. Second use a water based lubricant. Third make sure the tongue is in a relaxed state when you slid the jewelry in. Lastly, if you cam find a guide pin that threads on to the jewelry it will reduce the likelihood of damaging the jewelry.

I’m looking to get mine done Wednesday. I’ve heard we are allowed to eat dairy and I’ve also heard we aren’t. I want to eat what I can and not mess something up.

The dairy thing comes up from time to time but I've yet to come across any hard proof that it would be an issue. The idea that dairy would cause yeast bacteria to grow in your mouth is rather far fetched. In fact, I suggest yogurt to avoid thrush. I'm guessing that this fear of dairy came about when everyone was suggesting listerine and other alcohol base mouthwash back in the 90s. It cause thrush overgrowth as does over rinsing. If dairy caused yeast outbreaks and thrush after a tongue piercing than it would even without the piercing. It simply doesn't make sense. If some how dairy causes because you have a wound in your mouth then it would happen all the time because we bite and damage our tongues, cheeks and lips all the time. Did you get one the last tone you eat cheese after you bit your tongue? I think it's just a case of piercers tell other piercers this causes it and them repeating it as fact without doing any research. The only thing I can think of is you would want to consume raw dairy. Raw milk can contain harmful microorganisms in it. It's why we pasteurization dairy products.

today marked my fourth day with the piercing and boy is it getting ugly 😞 on the top of my tounge around my piercing it’s a bit of a brownish purple bloody color, and i did wake up with a bloody mouth today. there’s a little bit of tissue in the front of the ball that comes out a little almost like it’s trying to cover the ball, nowhere near doing so tho, i don’t know how to explain it i wish i could show you but i’m just worried that i’m going to have to take it out? does that sound like a bad situation to you? somebody please help

It sounds like the swelling maybe exceeding the length of the bar. See your piercer about putting in a longer one. My guess is that you are playing with the jewelry in your sleep which is causing the bleeding.

I have a question regarding stuff coming out of my tongue piercing. I don't know if it's discharge or something and started seeing it about two says after getting my piercing. I'm worried that if it might be pus, it'll be on the top side of the piercing and I see it maybe two or three times a day depending on how much I check it. It sounds like the normal discharge. Unlike non-oral piercings where the discharge hardens on the jewelry and around the piercing holes, it doesn't harden and often forms strings that look kind of like snot. It is normal to see it off and on during the healing. However, whenever in doubt see your piercer. They should have mentioned that this is often a normal reaction to the piercing.

Often the worse the swelling peaks at about 3 days and then it starts to reduce. The yellow stuff you are seeing, I believe is normal discharge.

Just got my tongue pierced today and was wondering I’m a smoker an everyday smoker. I was told by my piercer to rinse with the mouth wash every time I eat or drink anything other than water and after each cig. Also, to rinse with a sea salt mix after brushing my teeth. Is this what u would suggest? Because I’ve read things that say not to over clean and it seems excessive. That is a lot of rinsing. I generally only suggest rinsing twice daily.

No. There is not yeast in dairy products. Also you can't get a yeast infection in your mouth. Now thrush is possible but it is not a yeast infection, it is s fungal outgrowth caused by a bacterial imbalance caused by over rinsing or harsh mouthwash. There is no connection between thrush and dairy products. In fact the probiotics in yogurt may in fact treat or reduce the likelihood of thrush by restoring balance.

It's impossible to say without seeing the piercing first hand. Chances are it will go away but if it worsens or doesn't improve, see your piercer.
