You're a lucky guy. Ours have no instinct, so we let our barred rock look after a few warm Pekin eggs when she became broody. Now we're thinking we might want to make our next chicken a Cochin or a Silky because they brood really well and they don't mind adopting. And you earned a like, it was a great presentation.

I don't have any pekin ducks but I had some Roens and some Buffs . I just lost one last night with no signs of any blood or anything. just dead in the pen. The other Roen got taken by a coyote one dawn. sigh. It is very disheartening some times. Love to have a broody hen.
@Selfsufficientme

+Susan Thompson They only have small hearts so sometimes they simply die suddenly and it can be quite natural but I can sympathise with you about birds being taken by coyote as I've lost them to foxes and dogs - it's not very nice at all. Cheers :)

I've only heard of one peking duck who set the full term and raised her brood to weaning age. Don't even know if she was full peking to be honest. I'd keep her babies for replacements! LOVE your isolation pens.
@Selfsufficientme
@Selfsufficientme 9 жыл бұрын
+quailjailss I have heard this is rare also and only one of my pekin ducks sit so perhaps she's a one-off in my flock as well... I'll be keeping a few females from this hatching to see if they have the same trait as mum (fingers crossed). Those pens are actually flat packed dog kennels which I modified by tacking on snake proof mesh and making a border around the base with pine sleepers screwed together - they work really well! Thank you and cheers :)
@quailjailss

+Self Sufficient Me how embarrassing, I truly thought you spelled it "peking" and not pekin. Ha! Anyway, ill cross my fingers for you as well! I think her daughters will inherit their dad's genes though, not the mothers. If I'm not mistaken (and if that makes any sense...) So the best way to get you a flock of "broody" pekins would be to keep one of her sons and breed back to her (and all those females *should carry that broody gene). Somebody please correct me if I'm wrong. Please keep making poultry vids in the future. I love to see them!
@Selfsufficientme
@Selfsufficientme 9 жыл бұрын
quailjailss Yes Pekin not Peking but I still make that error sometimes LOL I never knew that about the daughters inheriting the dad's genes that's quite in depth and something I wouldn't have thought about but I'm glad you mentioned it! Thanks :)

Can I collect my pekin's eggs, and then after I have a large clutch of 12 or more can I place back in her nesting area? Will she sit on them? My 2 female pekins will be 2 year's old this August. I had let them get a large clutch last summer, but neither of the 2 girls sat on them. Our male Rouen would roll and rearrange the eggs, but the females wouldn't sit on them.

Hi Mark Thanks for the informative video, really great stuff. We've just re-homed a collection of ducks. They are settling in and have made a communal nest in the yard, they started laying together and one female seemed to be spending more time on the nest.......however, night comes and the squad all retreat into their shed leaving the nest free throughout. Then next day the interest is back and she spends more time on the nest. Is this an inexperienced duck and any advise on how to encourage constant sitting? Thanks Mate Niall
@Selfsufficientme
@Selfsufficientme 8 жыл бұрын
Hi Niall, that's a great story and thanks for sharing. Yes, I would say she is an inexperienced duck and even though it is natural for ducks to sometimes leave the nest for several hours at a time it's not good for the eggs to be without warmth overnight. Perhaps, move the nest into the shed hopefully this will encourage her to sit on it there and then say on the nest a night. Alternatively, build a small shelter egg laying box off or nearby the shed and place the eggs into that in the hope she and the other layers gets the hint. Cheers :)
