Carrie, I can’t thank you enough for your tips about hemming Chiffon. I’ve looked in the past for ways to make this task easier…and never found your method until today. It was easy, even pleasurable, to hem a friend’s bridesmaid dress. I can finally hem with results I’m proud of! Thank you so much!

I am so VERY happy that you were able to use this method to help you successfully hem a bridesmaid dress! Truly, it makes my day when people take the time to leave wonderful comments like this! Thank you for commenting, and most of all, I'm so happy with your successful hemming!!!

Thank you! I am hemming a bridesmaid dress for my daughter-in-law who will be 8.5 months pregnant in her dress. Intuition told me to attach a pillow to my dress form and use it to mark the hem instead of marking it on the ironing board as I usually do. Needless to say I was thrilled I got that part right. At that point I was clueless and have always avoided chiffon (I'm only been sewing for 55 years!) but now have the confidence to go for it. So excited - I subscribed!

Ohmygoodness, it worked! 😊 I've spend two days + on this (decidedly UNsimple ) project. Finding your video and watching both your demonstration on paper (genius, by the way), and then on the actual fabric, gave me the confidence to go for it. Yay! I'd finally found an instruction that actually made sense! I think the most important piece however, was the need to let the chiffon cool after pressing before continuing. THAT was the game changer for me! I pressed a wee bit, pinned it to the ironing board, then pressed a bit more. Pin. Press. Pin. Press. And voila! That elusive crease actually held! Thank you so much for taking the time to share your knowledge. It is much appreciated, indeed!

This is such a blessing. Have to hem my daughter’s dress for the oldest brother’s wedding this spring. This tutorial makes this seem doable. I will try and build up the courage to begin this daunting task. 😊 As I’ve read through the comments, a thought came to mind….perhaps we can do a practice run along what will become the waste fabric that gets trimmed off. In other words, make a practice hem way below where you are actually going to hem the dress. Also, as someone mentioned; make sure the wearer tries on the dress in the shoes they are wearing for the event. Especially with a floor length gown.
@SewDarnedFun Жыл бұрын
Yes! Excellent reminders: ALWAYS have the wearer wear shoes that are either the ones they will wear, or the same height, and PRACTICE on the hem you know you’ll be cutting away. This is what I do! All sheers are not the same and can behave differently. Thank you for mentioning these important issues in your comment ❤️I wish you well with your hemming of your daughter’s dress. If you have any tips or suggestions for others after you hem, please leave a comment that might help others! Happy Sewing!!!!!

@@SewDarnedFun in your opinion do you think I should keep the back long and only hem the front… tapering off? I’m only sewing about 4-6 inches off. That’s what I want to do and I don’t have anyone to help me measure it while I’m in the dress.
@SewDarnedFun5 ай бұрын
@@kimberchick8527 If you want a bit of a train to drag on the ground you could do this. Otherwise you could hang it on a hanger, above the ground…. Maybe on a door, and rig some padding in it to fill it out like a body would (I use rolls of bubble wrap and batting when I have some). That way you might be able to measure from the floor up. Maybe this makes sense, or maybe it doesn’t. Otherwise if you want it the same length in front and back you’re going to have to guess, by taking the average measure lent you come up with in the front (as often chiffon could measure a couple inches difference within a short space!)

Hello, i followed this video and your other video with five steps precisely, even though it's my natural instinct to cut corners and EVERY SINGLE THING you said made a difference. I really wanted to cut corners with the pressing but I did it and it made a big difference and the thing that surprised me the most was that pressing then rolling over the fabric with something made the fold stay. I'm guessing it's something to do with cooling down the fabric quickly, i don't know but it worked and thanks to you i made a pair of beautiful little petal sleeves to go on my daughters flower girl dress for my wedding! Thankyou so much. (Could you perhaps share some insight on a curved chiffon hem?)
@SewDarnedFun3 ай бұрын
Oh thank you for not cutting corners here and following my directions!!!! ;) It makes me happy to hear that the cute petal sleeves turned out so well! As for your question regarding curves, I think the tighter the curves, the more ‘fiddley’ the fabric would be in getting it to fold without puckering. That would be a matter of really working with the bias to try and get those threads to squish together more tightly. The good thing about sewing it with the hem side down is that you can use your feed dogs to your advantage by possibly holding your fabric taut, allowing your feed dogs to sort of pull any extra fullness through a tad more than the outer layer of fabric. Then a good press (and cooling with a towel or something) should help it to not ripple. Hope that makes sense! Thanks for watching, commenting, and hopefully subscribing ;)

Fantastic tutorial! I have always shied away from using such fabrics, but you have inspired me to give it a go. Like you, I have issues using a rolled hem foot. This method is a great alternative and gives you complete control to get a beautiful narrow hem. Thank you!

So helpful. Loved your tips, techniques. The first one about making sure the dress is hanging ... think I've had a less than satisfactory result because of just that issue; makes so much sense. Glad to hear you, with your experience, have had issue using the special feet. Also, appreciate the clarity of your steps and demos. I will be looking at your other videos.

OMG, wish I had found this before now. This material can make you lose your religion (and mind). I've done formals, wedding attire, alterations, etc, over the years - for friends and family. I finally got pretty good with my serger for a rolled hem. But there are times when it has to be done on sewing machine. Your tutorial will be marked at top of my list. Question: where did you get the chalk marker?
@SewDarnedFun Жыл бұрын
I'm SO glad you found my video!! YES, sheers can cause you to become 'not yourself' pretty quickly! There are 2 links in the description of this video where you can get a chalk marker like the one I use here. Thanks for finding me, watching, and commenting!!

Thank you so much for this video. The only part I didn't follow was the cutting of the extra hem. I couldn't tell how it was extra. It looked like part of the skirt. Can you please explain further? Thank you.
@SewDarnedFun Жыл бұрын
Remember that I pressed the hem up (I didn’t cut) then I ran a row of stitching just inside that pressed up hem, basically making another fold right next to the pressed fold? At this point, the extra hem allowance that I didn’t cut off, is now cut off, which allows the fabric to freely fold up on my officially pressed hemline. Then I stitch the tiny hem in place. You can see the demonstration I show on PAPER at about the 3:00 minute mark in this video. Please refer to it, if you've missed it! I’ve also just put out another shorter video on doing this same hem. I don’t know if it might show or explain things in a clearer way. Let me know if you’re still not undertaking clearly and, then reach out to me again so I can help you. Thanks for watching!!!

Do you press with steam?
@SewDarnedFun7 ай бұрын
Yes I do press with steam. My iron has a ‘shoe’ on it, so the steam diffuses a bit before it hits the fabric.

Can you teach me how to make a chiffon wedding cape in less than 2 weeks 😭 🙏🏽 Your video makes me feel like maybe I can possibly do it and I will attempt to if I can hem the edges just right, thank you so much for your insight. Wish me luck! 🍀
@SewDarnedFun3 ай бұрын
Hi there! I'm not sure what type of cape you are needing, but do you already have a pattern? Are you doing this without one? In my mind I'm envisioning a short cape, like the downloadable pattern you can get here: www.stylearc.com/shop/sewing-patterns/sussex-cape-dress/?srsltid=AfmBOoqwwysORFQ8kvB1qMK4SB6R_SmAFZf4xwoQS2zYer0JQY59GiNW I've not yet used this pattern company, so I don't know how easy or not their patterns are to use. Or...if you want to try and draft one on your own, and can filter through information that might not be what you need, here's a video of my 'sewing guru' as she shows how she made this same sort of cape (she shows how she uses an already made pattern and changes it, but you'll see the shape of the pattern and maybe can dummy one up for yourself to see if it works. Please make a fake garment first before you try it in chiffon!!!) kzbin.info/www/bejne/j2rbmp-HnKtja9k As long as you have a pattern to guide you, you most certainly can hem the chiffon as you need. Please practice doing it first though! Good luck!!!

Have the hem pressed. but, the lining is wonky!!! Didn't realize it until I pressed the Chiffon per your instructions and hung the dress up for a final check before sewing the hem. (Ordered this dress online.) The only thing I can think to do is take the smallest hem and use that all around the skirt. Any thoughts? I don't want to re-hem the lining.
@SewDarnedFun2 жыл бұрын
@@bootsboots8453 Can you let me know what you mean by wonky? The lining should be anywhere between a half an inch to an inch shorter than the chiffon. In my experience it would be easier to shorten the lining then mess with the chiffon. You certainly don’t want to get that sheer chiffon layer wonky also! If you have a serger, you can just serge the lining, turn it up, press it and topstitch it. I’d like to help you if you could give me more details :)
@bootsboots84532 жыл бұрын
@@SewDarnedFun You are too kind. I need the floor length dress for my granddaughter's formal wedding this Friday, June 3rd. Arrrrh! Anyway, wonky means the lining isn't even. The chiffon "was" 2 inches to 1inch longer than the lining. The chiffon was dragging by 2 inches. I didn't know what to do, so, I cut and sewed the chiffon 1" shorter all around. I did use your methods per video which was extremally helpful. The dress is black and I am old, so, I won't be noticed too much. And, I'll have to watch my steps or wear higher heels. I should have started on my dress sooner, but, had so many other wedding assignments to do. Thank you so much for the helping hand. I'm your new fan.
