Thank you! I am hemming a bridesmaid dress for my daughter-in-law who will be 8.5 months pregnant in her dress. Intuition told me to attach a pillow to my dress form and use it to mark the hem instead of marking it on the ironing board as I usually do. Needless to say I was thrilled I got that part right. At that point I was clueless and have always avoided chiffon (I'm only been sewing for 55 years!) but now have the confidence to go for it. So excited - I subscribed!

@@SewDarnedFun in your opinion do you think I should keep the back long and only hem the front… tapering off? I’m only sewing about 4-6 inches off. That’s what I want to do and I don’t have anyone to help me measure it while I’m in the dress.
@SewDarnedFun
@SewDarnedFun Ай бұрын
@@kimberchick8527 If you want a bit of a train to drag on the ground you could do this. Otherwise you could hang it on a hanger, above the ground…. Maybe on a door, and rig some padding in it to fill it out like a body would (I use rolls of bubble wrap and batting when I have some). That way you might be able to measure from the floor up. Maybe this makes sense, or maybe it doesn’t. Otherwise if you want it the same length in front and back you’re going to have to guess, by taking the average measure lent you come up with in the front (as often chiffon could measure a couple inches difference within a short space!)

Thank you so much for this video. The only part I didn't follow was the cutting of the extra hem. I couldn't tell how it was extra. It looked like part of the skirt. Can you please explain further? Thank you.
@SewDarnedFun
@SewDarnedFun Жыл бұрын
Remember that I pressed the hem up (I didn’t cut) then I ran a row of stitching just inside that pressed up hem, basically making another fold right next to the pressed fold? At this point, the extra hem allowance that I didn’t cut off, is now cut off, which allows the fabric to freely fold up on my officially pressed hemline. Then I stitch the tiny hem in place. You can see the demonstration I show on PAPER at about the 3:00 minute mark in this video. Please refer to it, if you've missed it! I’ve also just put out another shorter video on doing this same hem. I don’t know if it might show or explain things in a clearer way. Let me know if you’re still not undertaking clearly and, then reach out to me again so I can help you. Thanks for watching!!!

First of all, thank you for watching and commenting! You have a question with a double-edged answer there....YES, you can hem accordion pleated chiffon like this. However, when you press it, the pleating will come out in the areas you have pressed. It is time-consuming, but you can carefully, one by one, press the ends of those pleats back in. I have done it before and it turned out beautifully. But, it takes some tedious ironing when you're done with the hemming ;) Hope that help!

Is it ok to use a walking foot with this process. Looks so neat!
@SewDarnedFun

I’m not sure how to answer that, being that I don’t use a walking foot. I do know that you need constant tension on your fabric, with the feed dogs pulling it through. You’ll have to try out a walking foot and let us know how it works!

@@SewDarnedFun thank you very much! I just found a piece of chiffon to "try it out" on, and it worked great! I usually sew with cottons... but I have a few silky fabrics that I sew scrunchies with 😂 those are easy, but a *hem* on silky fabric has always been so intimidating for me. This worked!!!!

@@kristenyoung7853 I'm so happy it's working for you! A chiffon hem is certainly an animal of its own. A skirt hem usually has some bias in it which makes it a little difficult to work with. Question:Should the top Chiffon layer be longer or shorter than the lining? If so how much -1/2”, 1/4”???
@SewDarnedFun
@SewDarnedFun Жыл бұрын
That's a great question! Usually I look at the original design to see what their ratio is, in case there's a stylistic reason that the lining should be shorter than about 1/2"-3/4". Otherwise, it's fine to have it 1/2" shorter or more than the outer chiffon or sheer layer. Thanks for your question!

am so surprised you do not use any stabilizer (paper or nonwoven) nor any glue, spray or other accoutrements! would have been nice to know if you used a different needle, tension, and of course-- thread (both top & bobbin)
@SewDarnedFun
@SewDarnedFun 2 жыл бұрын
Sorry I didn’t specifically mention these details in the video. I use nothing special: regular sewing thread in needle and bobbin, probably size 75/11 Schmetz needle, and my regular sewing stitch length (3 1/2 on my machine). As you can see, stabilizers and such are not needed the way I do it. It wouldn’t be time effective for me, nor cost effective for my clients if I had to pick out a paper stabilizer or wash out a soluble stabilizer. For me, this is the quickest, most accurate, and easiest way that I have used in my years of bridal alterations. Certainly it’s not the only way… but it’s the one I use ;). Thanks for watching! ❤️

This is such a blessing. Have to hem my daughter’s dress for the oldest brother’s wedding this spring. This tutorial makes this seem doable. I will try and build up the courage to begin this daunting task. 😊 As I’ve read through the comments, a thought came to mind….perhaps we can do a practice run along what will become the waste fabric that gets trimmed off. In other words, make a practice hem way below where you are actually going to hem the dress. Also, as someone mentioned; make sure the wearer tries on the dress in the shoes they are wearing for the event. Especially with a floor length gown.

Yes! Excellent reminders: ALWAYS have the wearer wear shoes that are either the ones they will wear, or the same height, and PRACTICE on the hem you know you’ll be cutting away. This is what I do! All sheers are not the same and can behave differently. Thank you for mentioning these important issues in your comment ❤️I wish you well with your hemming of your daughter’s dress. If you have any tips or suggestions for others after you hem, please leave a comment that might help others! Happy Sewing!!!!!

Love the video and technique. Going to give it a try. I have two gowns to hem with chiffon overlays. I see you use a plastic foot on your machine. Is this a special "glide" foot and does it perform differently than a metal foot?
@SewDarnedFun
@SewDarnedFun Жыл бұрын
I hope my video will be helpful with your gowns. The foot I have on my machine is a Teflon foot. Honestly I don't have it on for any particular reason than it works well with a wide variety of fabrics and I don't have to change it ;) Also, it has little corners and such that I use for visual marking points, but other foots can have those little nooks and crannies, too. I see no reason why you couldn't use a regular 'silver' pressure foot, as long as it holds the fabric down well. Thanks for watching and good luck with your two gowns!!!

Thank you for watching and commenting on my video! I love this method of hemming chiffon, having tried other ways and was never happy with them. As for your question, I’ve always used the same color in the bobbin as the needle. Chiffon is sheer, so if you are hemming chiffon, just keep in mind that if your bobbin thread is a very different color than your fabric, it might show…? You’ll have to do a sample and let me know! Good luck!
