Today, Ian is joined by Martin Chuck from the Tour Striker Golf Academy. Martin is one of the top instructors in the world and today he gives Ian a lesson on hitting stingers.
Martin takes Ian through the setup to hit a stinger and teaches how everyone needs to think outside the box.
The old way of thinking is going out the door as Martin explains you don't need to place the ball back in your stance and chop down while try stopping your follow-through as soon as possible after impact.

Guys, really sorry about the wind disturbance on this one. We didn’t have the appropriate mic’s for filming outside on a gusty day. We have that sorted for next time. 🙏🏻

I played a stringer earlier this year but I had the exact same problem as Ian, I would keep hooking them to the point of hurting more than helping. Martin's explanation for why this happens, and how to fix it, is so unbelievably intelligent and digestible. I can't wait to get back out and practice this!

I'm the 11 hcp version of Ian's old stinger - ball back, hit down, 30 yard hook, bye bye ball. Time to try coach's 'new' approach. Wind noise on the mic didn't bother me - just proved that it really was windy.

okay i had to come back to comment, i took this advice to the course today, without any practice prior, just focusing on ball position through the bag the entire round, long story short, I shot my best round in probably my 30yrs of golfing, its kinda a anti left swing thought that really triggered it. being able to go a couple under for a Longdrive guy who apparently can't putt and has no short game, felt pretty good and it was definitely not the perfect round by any means. thanks for the tips Martin.

Played lots of street hockey when I was a kid - when you want to shoot low, finish shot low. Want to shoot high, finish high. Those were the swing thoughts a always used when trying to hit a stinger - regular ball position, but feel like I was cutting off my swing, finishing forward rather than up. Maybe I was just keeping my weight forward, rather than leaning back. Will give the instruction from this vid a try at next range session !

This was a game changer for me, I hit the ball high and using the new T200s struggle to flight the ball lower. Like most people I would have weight on front foot, ball back and hit pull hooks all day, and not that low either. Tried the weight forward off the front foot today and just hit flighted straight shots. Thank you for the great content

Such a great video, thank you. Practiced this technique and used it in 4 rounds or so now. It’s become my ‘stock safety shot’. this is super cool. But when I watch pga players play in the wind and at the British open, they always play back in the stance. Is this because they manage the face better? they like the low draws because it runs more doesn't it?

I'm a bit confused. I hit my long irons from forward of center to begin with and I'm not hitting stingers. I ripping the you know what out of it, but it's not flighted. If I want to bring it down I move it back a ball that's it and try to cover it with my sternum. Instant flighted stinger that doesn't hook. So I'm definitely a bit confused about the stinger part. I get the ball position forward for a higher ball flight with high hands finish. I certainly get the hook part moving it way back in your stance, been there failed at that. I even tried to open the blade to prevent the hook, no beuno. I learned the hard way small adjustments have huge impacts and keeps it playable. At the end talking about 3 and 5 woods, I hit knockdowns with a driver too. Makes for an excellent fairway finder. Hit down on it a touch for more spin to gain a bit more control. It works. It won't carry as far but it will run out on dry fairways.
@tourstriker
@tourstriker Жыл бұрын
It appears that is info doesn’t apply to you. A lot of people move the ball back AND hit down more. That pushes the path more inside out even when you are aiming “straight” and thus the tendency to hook it.
@industrialpalletworx3548
@industrialpalletworx3548 Жыл бұрын
@@tourstriker oh I have dealt with that hook. I understand it very well. Small adjustments make a huge impact on ball flight. It doesn't take massive alterations to make the ball do different things.

Under pressure the dominant hand takes over and the swing left around left hip becomes a pull hook. PGA pros underpressure hit it left. "one and done" doesnt work under pressure IMO.

Hitting down, but delivering a low amount of loft narrows the spin loft window. If you deliver alot of loft and attack down it will spin like crazy.

Can somebody who knows, preferably Ian what happened to Matt on the channel, just curious, I haven't watched the channel for awhile and can't find any info on the subject. I remember he had some neck/physical problems awhile ago or something and he wasn't acting like he was leaving anytime soon as he stated some plans for the future with the channel shortly before he disappeared. I mean no disrespect and I'm making no accusations in this request, I'm just curious.

This isn't really a lesson on how to hit a stinger, it's a lesson on how to not hook the ball. Playing the ball back for a stinger is definitely correct. You just have to understand what that does to the swing. I play stingers back in my stance, but I stand a bit open cause I know it's going to make my path right, and I keep my hands from releasing early so that I don't hook it. The ball winds up coming out low and pushed a bit, but I compensated for that with setup. Putting the ball forward doesn't help hit it low, it just makes you have to compensate the other direction by swinging left. Not sure what the point of that was in this lesson except to see you hit a fade. Go find me a single tour pro who hits a stinger with the ball that forward, or even forward at all for that matter.

I'm confused. I just watched this: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fqjGiIx6qJ6Mp9k I guess it depends on how open or shut the club face is and the way you swing???
@tourstriker
@tourstriker Жыл бұрын
Ball location is a big contributor to club path. If you want to avoid a ball that curves into a draw/hook, a forward ball location helps to provide a “cut across” path that lends itself to a fade/cut pattern on the stinger. I’m not familiar w MrShortGame, but he has done a nice job building his channel.
@cheemomugdoo799
@cheemomugdoo799 Жыл бұрын
Good stuff, but I don't think this is a true stinger, more of a flighted shot. The real stinger is hit with a delofted face, and a rather shallow angle of attack, where the divot is minimal. This is a great video of a super slo-mo Tiger woods stinger, kzbin.info/www/bejne/bIexfXqBn76pj80 and as you can see, he is not hitting down on the ball. Zac Radford is also very skilled in the stinger shot, but he has said it took him about a year to perfect it.

A little disappointing trying to tell people to hit low fades only for the low shot. what happens if you have a dog leg left hole. missed a chance to discuss palmer flexing the wrist during the follow thru as well no radial deviation ( re cocking of the wrists ) for the finish. most amateurs already struggle with this shot and you're trying to make it their to go to for a low shot, not the best advance imo. good video nonetheless.

@@kevinconnolly754 the point was to hit a low shot but it was explained in a very one sided way. I think their is a better way to get more consistent results than the procedure they used.
@tourstriker
@tourstriker Жыл бұрын
My point was pretty simple. Most players move the ball back in their stance to try to flight it down. They don’t realize they create extra rightward path, for the right handed golfer by doing so. This video wasn’t about showing people how to curve it both ways. Although, I did mention putting the ball back can create more rightward path to curve it right to left. Trying to work a golf ball around corners on doglegs isn’t recommended unless you’re Ben Hogan or Moe Norman.
