So flippin' true. One more piece to your puzzle Paul is that taking the thought of LESS distance with a fairway wood will almost always result in hitting the ball in the sweet spot, so the distance will actually occur. Keep preaching, some of us are receiving your message! 😉

Thanks, Paul. Ironically, I started doing this on my own with my 3 and 4 hybrid during the last round I played. I can’t tell you how unbelievably well this worked out for me. Now that you’ve said it, it’ll be stuck in my game forever. An 80% swing with clean club face contact is way better than a topped 1000% effort swing.

Thanks for the sub! Simple is the key for sure. You actually need to understand it and try it. Too complicated and you probably won't remember it and not do it right. So you don't get the results. When I was learning I made it complicated too. This got me nowhere and I was practicing daily for years. So if I didn't get it the average person will never get it.

Just a follow up to say I had success yesterday playing with thinking differently over a ball with a three wood or 5 wood. This was more of a mental lesson than swing mechanics. "The longest distance in golf is the six inches between your ears." I went through several brands of 3-woods before settling on a Callaway Razr Hawk. Less is more. It has saved my clunker drive many a time and I swing it easy, no easier. My partner will grab it and tap on the face to see what its made of. Thanks Paul!

Paul you are absolutely spot on about the situations that lead to hitting poor fairway woods. My best shots from 200+ yards out have come from a more effortless swing with less emphasis on nailing a heroic shot to save par. Have recently acquired a new 7 wood and I am struggling a bit off the deck - I will use your advice and see if I can't hit it better. Thanks!

@jpbernie724 жыл бұрын
Paul you are so right on the psychology of the fairway wood. I figured out my personal technique (which might work for others as well) is that I have to watch the ball as I’m hitting it. One time I had to carry the ball at least 170 yards over a large body of water. I thought well, I’m going to lose this ball or top it and it will dribble up to the pond (so I didn’t really care about the carry distance I just wanted to try it). I watched the ball, hit a good strike and couldn’t see it due to the sun angle. So, as I drove up I looked first on the close side of the pond and then on the far side of the pond and I still could not find my ball. I looked approximately 25 to 30 yards up the hill toward the hole and lo and behold there was my ball. I can’t remember what I did after that with the chip in put but I will never forget that clean three wood shot.

Thanks Paul, I actually stopped using the 3W off the fairway because of many types of mishits. So I use my 3H instead, much better result, even when I did actually hit the 3W great, my 3H goes further for some reason. I will try again & see how I go.
@paulwilsongolf Жыл бұрын
You're welcome. 3W is easy to hit. I have literally helped countless people over the years who couldn't get them airborne. Usually takes me no more than 4 balls and they hit it perfectly. Just need to understand it and loosen up. You've got this.

Works like magic. I have had person after person who were topping the fairway woods hit them perfect in no more than 6 balls. Just follow along and you too will hit them great too.

You have helped me finally connect with my 3 Wood. I was constantly topping it. Much better now, but no perfect yet. But at least I’m connecting the ball so much better and not topping it. Thank you so much.

Thanks Paul! Great tip! I played around yesterday and I struggled with my fair way woods. I was hoping the ball. After a few holes I lost confidence in my fairway woods. Also, I was swinging too hard.

That is from standing on a range for 30+ years. There has to be a reason for this stuff. Know that and you can easily fix it. I am never guessing.

Glad you liked it. Thanks. Skying is you getting your head ahead of the ball in the downswing. This is due to hitting with your arms. I still remember the last ball I ever skyed. After that, I kept my head behind the ball as I hit the ball. Here you go: kzbin.info/www/bejne/eKulmJyLnd6leJY

Hi Paul - I love the Spalding Lee Trevino woods story - aounds like Spalding knew their buying market! You are so great and animated in your videos - with all the experience you have teaching golf, you could definitely do stand-up comedy! Thanks for another great golf tip!

I would literally check those clubs out every time I wandered around the shop. They sat on that rack for years. The pro should have allowed people to tape them up and hit them. They would have seen great fairway woods shots instantly. Probably ended up in the junk yard. Not sure about stand up. I do say it like it is though which can be funny to most and a few thin skinned babies get turned off. If you can't handle me then your playing the wrong game.

Something that has really helped me is thinking about starting the ball over an intermediate target 30 to 50 yards out. I think that this helps to eliminate the "distance" thought.
@paulwilsongolf4 жыл бұрын
Great. Glad you tried it. Never think distance on these shots. If so you will watching it rolling down the fairway.

Hey Paul - love the instruction style you use: it’s very easy to understand. I was wondering if you could make a video similar to your drill for ball position/ stance for distance away from the golf ball. I think I have a good understanding of it, but it would be helpful for a Paul Wilson style demo video to confirm that! Thank you for all your tips.

Thank you for the support. I already did one on most of this here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pWaYdJ9jl952p5o Distance from ball - 6-7" with irons a little farther with woods.

I can definitley relate your observation. So many times, I have experienced this phenomenon! Getting a great shot with expectations of another great follow up shot with the wood! And, BIBGO, just as you described, a hard swing with a frustrating topped shot! Thanks for sharing your swing thoughts.

I think I have seen that Spaulding club at Goodwill. It does have that "bulge on it." It is a very heavy club. Thank you for your video, Paul. I have a good friend I have played golf with for the last six years. He can really hit a long drive, but when it comes to fairway woods, he tops it to often. I hope this will help.

Hi Paul. I really enjoy your KZbin vids. Does your swing setup change if you want to use the fairway wood as a pinch shot versus a sweep. How does this pinch differ from punching the ball by delofting the irons?

Another easy to understand concept. Paul you have a way of communicating ideas that are easy to incorporate. Just wanted to say thanks again for the tip of having a tee six inches back and a little inside to use as an aim point to fix the over the top swing. Practicing this has resulted in the greatest improvement in my swing, ever!

I think it should be the same with the driver, hybrides and long irons, isn't it ? I saw some improvement with slowing down my swing. But I must admit that I still think "distance". So I'll add your tip to become more efficient with all my clubs. Thanks Paul.

Paul, have I got this correct, in your bunker tip , do you actually aim for the ball in your down swing, and because of your pre set adjustments the club with automatically hit behind ball ..Mike Teys
@paulwilsongolf3 жыл бұрын
You are hitting the ball without thinking of hitting it. You know it will be hit. If you fixate on hitting it you will never get through it.
