14 degrees and it works for me. Totally agree with the comments on not fighting the natural shapes as I did that for years. I eventually figured out that aiming at the left portion of the green was the secret and my big miss still stayed in play. Good video Mark, I like this content a lot. Still miss the on course videos with the boys as well.

Mark - one of your best videos ever. So much information for new golfers who don't think or know almost any of this information. Our swing speeds are near identical, I play a Callaway Subzero 13.5 that is closed to 14.5 so it has a built-in small draw - something I learn from you. I set my driver up to be fadable so I want the 3wood to be easier to draw - I then have a #2 Mizuno 16 degree hybrid, opened to 15, that is my fadable club 225-240 carry club.

Really good Mark. For me as a 16 handicapper the risk / reward of playing 3 wood off the deck is so weighted towards risk that I rarely take it on. Accepting 2 shots to the green on a par 5 and making par is still 3 points and I'm not duffing it or in the undergrowth

Mark you have a gorgeous golf swing. Watching you setup and swing is like a golf lesson in real time. I know what to look for and you tick all the boxes. In answer to your query. I swing my driver approx 84 mph and, as a consequence, the only fairway that I employ is a TM Sim Max 18 degree 5 wood with a Ventus 5 regular shaft. I get 3 wood numbers with it per the launch monitor because my strikes are more consistent and, as I say, on average, this club matches or exceeds those that I get with a similarly setup Sim Max 15 degree 3 wood - about 190 -200 yards.

Got fitted for a Ping G410 12 months ago, looking for something I could hit consistently off the fairway but also as an option off the tee. Ended up with a 3 wood head set at 15 degrees with a 5 wood shaft. Really improved the consistency of the strike which made up for any slight loss in speed.

I was playing a Taylormade High Launch 3 wood at 16.5 degrees with a regular flex shaft and switched to a 15 degree with a stiff flex. It's much easier to know where my club face is at impact with the stiffer shaft. Not just how square it is, but also much easier to brush the grass more consistently.

Good video, one of your better recent instructional ones. I carry a 15 degree but hit it rarely now. I used to only hit 3 wood and didn’t carry a driver, could get my 3 wood out about 230 metres which is plenty around my course but for whatever reason I’ve lost all control with it. Now I tee off with driver or 3 hybrid, 3 wood isn’t worth the risk.

Thanks Mark, I use a 15 degree 3 wood. Liked the bit about shape as tend to draw my 3W off the tee but definitely get more of a slight fade off the deck; I shall start to allow for that shape rather than setting up to draw it. Also, liked the bit about speed and giving it a rip, too often I try and coax it to get the strike, but too often i don’t quite get it. From now on I am going hard with 3W or going to my hybrid. More videos like this would be great. Thanks for the tips.

Hi Mark. Having a slower swing speed I have got 18 and 21 degree woods. Both have lighter regular shafts to help increase swing speed to help launch. The next club is a 4 hybrid which is set at 22 degree. Suggestion for future vlog would be exercise to help increase flexibility/mobility to gain bigger turn, stretches etc.

I carry 2 fairway woods, a 3 strong (13 deg) which I use exclusively off the tee and a 5 wood which is 19 degrees. Both Cleveland Hibore XLS. They replaced McGregor Mactech woods in my bag about 5 years ago and I'm happy with them. the 5 wood gives me a chance of getting on from 200 Yards out and I can get maybe 230 off the tee with the 3 wood but stay on the planet. I hit driver once per round at our long par 3 (250Yds). Since swapping to 3 wood for most of my tee shots I've come down from 29 to 22. I may have a driver fitting with my pro this winter but at £500+ for a driver these days, it's a big investment.

Mine is a TM M2 high launch. I don’t mine giving up a few yards to get the higher launch angle and it’s easier to hit and lands better. My favorite shot in golf is a 3 wood from the fairway that lands and holds the green.

I use a 5 wood off the deck. I don’t bother with a 3 wood, even off the tee because I’m so comfortable with my driver, which gives me a nice high trajectory. Being older than 70 as I am, hybrids and lofted fairway woods keep me in the game.

Great info and a good reminder for me to reserve using it in tricker lies (ball below or above feet)... at that point i should probably just sacrifice distance and go for my i25 22 degree hybrid. Would love to see a vid on playing irons on tricky fairway lies (below and above feet)... so hard... dare i say impossible to practice at the range...but OH SO important to be armed with good knowledge about it.

I know this is an older video Mark, first, thank you for all of the great tips you provide. Second, after watching the hybrid tips video, you place the bottom of the head flat on the ground. With your fairway, do you place the heel down with toe up or is it flat like you would the hybrids?

Currently have a M5 3 wood lofted down to 13.5 degrees . Almost exclusively from the tee just for 3 holes on my home course. Tee it a little higher and think driver goes and generally goes well. Cobra F9 3 wood 14.5 degree. I love a three wood. I make space in my bag for it as our par fives are all over 500 one is 635 and one is 580. Yes! 10:29 I almost never use it from the rough and definitely not on a fairway down slope. I always feel like I can get away with it on an up slope from the fairway if it's not too steep.

I bought my fairway woods off the rack( bit tight on budget) same as the ones you're using. I find them really easy to use and forgiving. The 5 wood gets me out of lots of dodgy situations. I will try to swing a bit faster and will definitely widen my stance. That will help me with the three wood I hope. Thanks Mark.

Got custom fit for the entire top end of the bag. As a high speed but high spin player, driver got set to 7.5 and the fairway to 13. The hybrid got chucked (it was a hook machine) and replaced with a 16 degree driving iron. My issue now is the gap from the 16 degree iron to the bottom of the 'traditional' iron set, 4 iron, is about 25-30m, which I need to fix.

Great dissection Mark! I pretty much do similar with my fairway woods... In fact, I LOVE my fairway woods since I can send them with some regularity and predictability. I pretty much go right at it as well! For me, I tend to go straight to a fraction of a fade with the odd hook. I think my 3 wood is probably a 16 since I'm playing with an old TM M2 3WHL... no twistface. LOL

Interested in your comments on degrees down. Wish I had a fancy launch monitor! One thing you didn't talk about is strike. I play a 16.5 ts2 which I find very sensitive to how high on the face I hit it. Half a ball height makes the difference between almost a wedge flight and a low stinger. I find hitting on soft mats that I can get the highest flight by hitting well down on the ball to catch it on the upper half of the face. If I hit it level and try to pick the ball off the mat, I'll end up hitting the lower half of the face with a low flight that lands hot. This trick is a lot harder to pull off when the ball is sitting down on a hard fairway with thin grass.
