I nudged ball position forward about 1" on a shot with the 5-wood the other day to get a little higher flight and let it ride the wind. Huge change. Better strike, better flight, straighter. So I kept doing it to see if it would work some more. And it did! Such a tiny change made such a big difference. Can't wait to watch it steadily creep forward until I start topping them and decide I need a new 5-wood.

I got fitted by the Titleist Tour Van about 5 years ago at my club. Saw the same dude fitting Dufner in the next month of Golf Digest. He was awesome and we geeked out for an hour because I ask questions like a 6 year old. I pulled the old hybrid out of my bag because it was so inconsistent. Fitting made a huge difference (-0.5" shaft, right kick point, etc.), obviously, but the best advice was, "Make the grass dance." The grass in front of the ball should be lightly scraped, but no divot. Having that visual was very helpful for me. That's the last thing I say before pulling the trigger on my hybrid and I've become a very consistent hybrid player. Thought I'd pass that along since that was helpful for me. @TXG - as a fellow lefty Canadian, now enjoying 12 months of golf a year in California, keep the content coming! Numbers junkies like me are loving it!

I totally agree that I need this video too ... However I didn't get: What I needed to do so that I could hit my fairway wood or IF I tried a Hybrid what to do properly. I agree that Matt sure can do what ever's asked of him as some other commented earlier. I don't think I fell asleep any one of the three times I watched so I wonder what I've missed.

I like hybrids. I have a complete set of them instead of using irons. I agree with you guys. Play the ball slightly ahead in your stance and I sweep it disturbing the ground a small amount. Works well for me. I have had pro's at clubs tell people to hit down on the ball. Might work for some but I like my way better. Great review guys !!! Enjoyed seeing this. Joe

Outstanding video. I don't know why I hadn't thought of this earlier, but I just started tracking the positioning for each club to get the optimal shots. I added the info into my cell phone so I can easily access and remind myself where to position myself upon address. Hopefully I won't have to adjust too much over time. LOL ... always a work in progress. Great insight!

Video Suggestion : Matt, a few videos back you mentioned a few years back your swing speed was not near that fast. A video describing what you did over a long period of time to increase your swing speed would be fantastic!

With all these videos you guys are going to shave shots of people's handicaps! Best free advice is always to go back to basics! I know I check my ball location consistently throughout the season, pop down an alignment rod for a range session and just focus on ball position!

It's funny how pretty much every golf youtuber out there has tried to make this video, but only you guys go deep into both of these shots in detail with the launch conditions and actually address BOTH setup mistakes (too forward, too back), unlike most that just say "hit down more"

Excellent instructions! As a senior golfer, I do not carry a fairway wood. I do have a 16degree hybrid which I can hit almost as far as most my age hit a 3 wood. When I was younger my index was under 5, (now almost 10) and I could hit long irons. I think this is why I like the hybrids better than the fairway woods.

Great video, this is exactly what I was struggling with my 3 wood off the tee! Had it set up as a driver and had the same inconsistent flight issues in addition to a heavy slice. Moved it back now and it’s much improved, now being a fade and my distance is increased. 👍

So i want to say your content is excellent for the levels you seem to be providing for. Having played golf for over 50 years and playing to a 10 handicap, once was a 3 most folks or avergae golfers cannot come close to swinging like Matty. Great mechanics. I believe you need a more balanced mix for the average guy and your tube would be perfect.. Just my thoughts.

I am crippled when trying to use a traditional hybrid. However, the cobra one length 4-hybrid was a game changer for me. I can carry 225 all day with it and have complete confidence with it.

I got this same advice in a recent fitting. For my hybrids I used to play the ball in about the same spot as my mid irons. Moved it up a bit and my contact immediately got much better, especially on a good swing. No amount of ball positioning seemed to help with a fairway wood, though, so we ditched it and went with a 2H instead.

I'm one of those guys. I have so much trouble with both of my hybrids (3 and 4) and both of my fairway woods (also 3 and 4) I no longer put them in my bag when I go to the course, even though I hit my 24 degree 5 iron very well. Most frequent ball flight with all 4 is a duck hook. I think with Matty's club head speed he can make any strike look good. I, on the other hand, am 69 years old and my club head speed with these 4 clubs is 75-80 mph.

I def do not hit my 3H as long as my 5W. It is prob more of a club difference. But now I am getting older and slower, I def put away 3i and 4I and swapped them with hybrids. Even considering adding a 5H lately. I think most amateurs need to be honest with ourselves and admit we do not have the swing speed to hit a 3 or 4 iron up high enough to hold the green. With the hybrids, the ball gets up in the air easier and give us a better chance to hold the green.

Yes! I’ve been putting the ball too far forward, which explains why my hybrid is barely getting to 5 iron distance. Gonna need to push it back 1-2 balls.

Yes guys thanks... 'think' Ive realised that 'sometimes' my dead-straight push (about 20yds right), with new mavrik subzero that takes just a bit much turf is slightly back from nominal position. I must sub-consciously put next one forward a little bit - or hang back in my swing cos I get shallow slightly hooky shots - or Tops 🤦‍♂️. This vid just re-enforces that I kind of know the ball position is slightly off and I over adjust the swing. Light bulb indeed 👍

Thank's Guys that was really helpful! I have never really understood why I can hit my hybrids so well, but if I attempt to hit my Fairway Wood it's a TOTAL disaster! I know that with my FW I have my ball position too far forward, but as soon as I move the ball back I hit this horrible fat shot. Every time I go for a range session I always intend to devote the session to FW's but after 5 or 6 disasters the Bandit Red-mist descends and the FW is Banished to the naughty cupboard yet again!
