It’s been a few weeks now practicing with the jo and now it is actually making noise through the air when I am striking. Slow is smooth and smooth is fast. Great Mantra. Thanks Matt

Hi Matt. Been off line a few days.. Really glad your'e sharing your walking stick instruction. The 36 inch stick has always been one of my favorites lengths for self defense, being it covers many different situations, that may arise in self defense confrontations. Stay safe. Doug.

I always insist that Matt's commentary carries even more substance because that is where everything starts and ends from for example moving while hitting, creating a distance, raising hands and shouting back off to a bully. I started working with the sticks in 2016 and it took me at least 2 years to master the heaven six. Now I understand the stick's principles well and come here often to stay sharp. What specific time do you usually go live?

Thanks for the video! I do the most striking training with a cane. When I'm in public, I'm most likely to be carrying a cane. Because of that, I think that training the most with the cane is the most practical thing to do. I'm pretty basic with the cane, but I like to practice those moves for when someone comes at me from behind. In terms of my favorite moves to practice, I like something in the short bo or long jo range. My regular walking stick for walking laps in the my driveway is five feet long. I like having extra length for a hiking staff even though the official proper height for a hiking staff for me is probably 55 inches. In some ways, the full six-foot staff would look and feel cooler, but I also think it would make me appear to be trying to cosplay some kind of character. I don't do as much training of the staff strikes because I tend to become tired from my other training and have to quit when I run out of energy. I do the spins with the five and six foot staffs to try to increase overall fitness and work the arthritis out of my right shoulder. If I ever had to fight with a staff, I think much of the success would come from being strong enough to make those strikes with power. If I were still hiking, I would practice the staff work more because I would be carrying a hiking staff into the woods on a regular basis. I almost always train some punches, some elbows, and some palm strikes in case I find myself fighting without easy access to my cane.

I actually found a fat 3 inch diameter by 36 wooden dowel on Amazon but they are expensive so I decided to order the 2-in diameter by 36. I can even use this as an easy grip wooden barbell for my exercise power bands.

3" would be quite large to grip. 2" would be better, especially if you have large hands. 1.5" works for me.

I am having a hard time deciding between the Jo staff, the Bo staff or a shorter walking stick. But I am begining to see that the principles are the same.

Basics are the same. Some differences for sure. Bo is easiest to learn and is a good foundation for the rest.

Thanks Matt! I'm a big fan of the shorter videos covering a few combinations in detail. They LOOK easy until you start doing them, and then it's, "Hmm. Did this hand go over or under? Did his top hand slide down on the chop?" etc. So I end up replaying a lot, and actually try to take notes so I can just read the "workout" and do it (rather than trying to stop the video, find the spot, etc.) QUESTION: Near the end of the video (10+ minutes), with the upstrike to the groin, it looks like you've combined the stepping off the line with that strike, whereas in the early parts, they are distinctly separate. Is that the ultimate goal, or is it better to keep them more distinct (or both)? Preferences? Interesting. My first stick is the Hanbo, so I'm a little partial to that so far. Ultimately, I think I want to go up to the Jo and am deciding if 4' is preferrable to armpit height (about 53" for me). The rationale for me is that I'd be most likely to carry a walking stick on a hike, and the 3' Hanbo is too short for going downhill. In playing around with a 4' broom handle and a extendable pole at 53", I've noticed some of the chops are harder to "recover" - since you can't just continue the motion so the far end circles down clockwise and comes to the back hand. (I think we have a combo in an earlier routine where we swing that back, then slide the hands across each other to switch sides. Think it is a jab, block, and chop the far end of the stick back, do the hand passover and switch sides.) The Hanbo gives surprising reach though, and I think I'll eventually train with both.I still get a chuckle out of how far I can reach with the longer Jo though. Not sure where from there.Chucks or a cane I guess. Don't envison working a full length bo. Need to work in some of the free hand stuff too. The one thing I keep in mind with Hanbo training is that it is same length as a cane, so anyone who wants to carry a cane, Hanbo might be more similar if they want to practice with something not their cane. Hanbo seems like it would be good for travel or in car. Maybe the group can chime in on what they've noticed in regard to limitations when going to additional length (hanbo to jo in particular.) Maybe there are some things that don't translate well (I had kind of assumed they would be similar). The hanbo is likely better for indoor training too, but you can still whack stuff. (Feels like I'm 13 again and just dinged my ceiling).

Which stick do I like the best? For training I like the idea of the 6' bo at home, but the best by far, in my view, is the walking stick because it's an everyday object which you would have on you at any one time. The law regarding 'self defence' here in the Uk is slightly different to the US. If you have any object on you for the purpose of self defence, it is illegal as it becomes an offensive weapon. If however, you picked up something, or had something such as a walking stick in your hand, and used it for self defence then that becomes an object which is used for defending yourself and not something you had on you for the purpose of self defence, which then becomes an offensive weapon. I like your videos. I have to say though that striking the head, as shown in this one, may k1 someone. My preference would be a strike to the collar bone or side of the neck, depending on circumstances such as the users power and the threat. Enjoying the content.. thanks (What about a pen/pencil size stick video?)

Thank you for your thoughtful comments. I do like the idea of a pencil or pen size stick video. I carry a self defense pen and a kubaton keychain and train others in their use too. I'll do that! thank you!

By the magic of twisted legislative alchemy, an object used in self defense transmogrifies into an offensive weapon. I guess the logic of analyzing the behavior and the facts of each case to determine if an object was used defensively or offensively escapes these magicians.

@@percyfaith11 Interesting ideas. I like the subtle change between an object becoming offensive from defensive. Maybe there's some scope to design techniques around that principle. There could be a situation when an object is used purely in self defence.. for example doing nothing but blocking every blow from an attacker with a stick, the attacker gave up and ran off. The object used in self defence was never an offensive weapon. There could also be a possible situation of a little old lady wacking a solid 6' guy over the head with her walking stick, somewhat offensively, if he tried to take her handbag(without her permission) and knocking him out. I don't think he would get much sympathy or support from anywhere. It looks like it is about intention and the facts of the circumstances. A tactical pen would be considered an offensive weapon because it has been designed to cause injury.

@@magicroundabout5081 I think your energy might be better spent in convincing law makers to decriminalize self-defense and self-defense tools such as canes and pepper spray. There is the inevitable logical disconnect in a lot of the political class that concludes that if weapons are outlawed then the innocent will be protected since obviously no one could possibly have any weapons.
