How to hold a guitar pick properly.

Here I show you the correct way to hold your guitar pick. It doesn't matter if it's for strumming, picking, speed, blues or metal... Holding the pick is a fundamental technique you want to get right from the get go OR at least something you want to fix asap if you aren't holding it this way.
Yes, there are lots of great guitar players that hold their pick in weird ways, but this is by far the most common and it's easy to see why. It just makes sense.
It may feel unnatural to hold your guitar pick like this in the beginning, but stick with it and it will pay off big time!

I want to learn to hold my pick this way but my knuckle keeps rubbing against the other strings and it hurts and even wears down my skin how should I change the way I'm holding it??

QUESTION! I’ve been playing for a few months and I find my pinky sticks out and rests on the pickguard while I’m playing. Is this wrong and will it limit my playing ability? Should I hold my pick with my pinky tucked in to form a fist?

I actually ended up using thick picks early on, started with .77s and now play 1.14s. With .77s I found my hand constantly cramped so I never wanted to play with it, then realized it was cramping because I had a death grip on it. I hold the thicker picks much more relaxed and let them do the work and now my hand doesn’t cramp Edited to add: My current favorite pick was made from an old vinyl record. It’s like 2mm thick, I swear.

I've been playing for seven years now while holding the pick on the pad of the index finger, rather than the side of the knuckle. I think I'm starting to see the limitations of speed using this type of grip, but correcting to the standard method is so daunting, how long would you expect it to take to readjust to a different grip on the pick? I heard Paul Gilbert used the "pad" type of grip before changing later on

I've struggled for years with pick holding to improve speed and can say this way is the best. Do as he says and start with a soft pick and go back to playing simple chord progressions and easy melodies. Also focus on downpicking more, as pad to pad pickers do a lot more up picking. In a short while you will see the benefit.
