How To: Honda CRF300L/Rally MotoX Exhaust Installation 4K
This is my video of the removal of the stock exhaust from a Honda CRF300 Rally (It's the same for a 300L once the bodywork is off), and the installation of a MotoX exhaust from TNT in Thailand via Bikerzbits.
I also give a close up look of the components, and I apologise in advance, but yes, I weigh both the stock and MotoX exhaust systems.
This video doesn't cover the bodywork removal or refitting, or the noise testing which will all be done separately, though I do run the bike briefly though the mic doesn't do it justice.
00:00 Introduction
02:29 Close look at the exhaust
03:42 Removal of stock exhaust
08:40 Weight comparison
10:20 MotoX Installation
14:48 Test & Conclusion
I hope this video has been useful, and if it has, please like and subscribe and I'll see you next time.
Thanks,

Great install video man. Thanks for really taking the time to go step-by-step and showing how it is done. This video can basically be used for any of the CRF300L full system exhausts as most of them are the same as far as the install process. I am personally thinking of going with a yoshimura for mine but that is just cause I have nostalgia of having a Yoshimura exhaust on my first bike which was a CBR500 lol. Keep up the videos man this was great quality and well made. Cheers.

Your videos have been a big help. I just installed this same exhaust (without the baffle) a Yamato skid plate and Yamato frame protectors all obtained from Biker Bitz. The sound is perfect in my opinion and the 6+ kilo weight savings is fairly substantial. I may consider a lithium battery as well given the fact that the bike has already been over on its side a few times and will likely be again considering Florida is mostly a giant sand pit. I have a set of Motoz RallZ tires in the garage that may help with the sand traction. Just did my first oil and filter change while I had the panels and skid plate off as well.

Awesome! Sounds like a great setup. Let me know how you get on with the Lithium battery. I’d thought about it, but then decided I’d use the stock one for a while. Yes great stuff, I have the 300L and ordered the stainless version and had to pay the import taxes, (approx £50.00), very pleased with the quality of the product. I had to fettle to get a nice fit by cutting 3mm off the header and the link pipe so the complete exhaust was not strained between the cylinder bolts and the muffler bolts. I fitted the oxygen sensor to the header pipe by twisting it around the sensor so not to damage the wires, then tightened it last. I agree the exhaust is no more louder than stock, so along with the weight saving was very pleased and I feel there is more torque . I tried desperately to find a UK made alternative but it seems the firms I approached were not interested in making for this very popular new model, and the FMF and Yoshi were already too loud and ridiculously expensive, this exhaust fills the gap and is an excellent product.

Just for interest, Ive had a moto x for four years on my 250 rally. Its worn well but the exhaust gas is directed directly on the indicator and after some spirited riding melted away, New indicators , new location. The end can doesnt have the well thought out heat shielding the standard can has so make using side bags problematic. Although the primary focus on exhaust tune is euro 4/5 compliance, a lot of engineering goes into torque production and mid range drops away somewhat with the moto-x. Exhaust, mapping ,cubic capacity and stroke etc make effects on torque. On the dyno mid range was seen to drop but hp didnt change much. Pulling of the snorkel gained half a pony and a dna filter another half. Ive been a little concerned about resulting leaness but 35000 k later no noticeable problem. Fueling conrollers like a power commander will allow mixture changes but ideally breaking into the map and rewrite on the dyno is the trick. Newer generation bikes make that hard. but hopefully this week newly aquired software will allow us to break in. Exciting days ahead. A great and realistic result would be 3 or 4 rear wheel ponies, smoothing and creating and redirecting torque where it is neede. Heres hoping. Finally I know we are comparing differnt models here but the basics are the same. The moto-x looks the same, im guessing slightly larger manifold pipe but dont know. Great weight saving but expect a slight drop in torque.
@PeakMotorcycles
@PeakMotorcycles 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Peter, interest indeed! I’ve not noticed any heat (at least not close to melting temperatures) on the indicator yet, but will keep an eye on it. I’ve done one weekend away with soft luggage and used an Enduristan Inferno heat shield which seemed to keep the bags cool. May I ask where you are? I’d be interested in getting the bike on a dyno to get some real data, and if I can get a remap to match, even better! I’ve not noticed any change, it still pulls uphill in most gears (not 6th) and hits 70+ on a GPS speedo ( the dash reads 7-8mph more than the GPS).
@peterlennan
@peterlennan 3 жыл бұрын
@@PeakMotorcycles Interesting. My 250 over reads at the same rate. I put on a on tooth smaller motor sproket and that made the gps and speedo match. It was fine on the open road smoother good speed , higher cruise but a strong headwind and a hill put you in 3rd and 4th ( the rally screen is somewhat of a wind handbrake ). I have gone back to original as 1st gear was too high in slippery off road conditions but I really shouldnt be in first anyway so I need to toughen up. I did 300 + k yesterday and decided to put the smaller cog back on when i can muster up enough enthusiasm to go out to the garage., Im inherently lazy. In answer to your question about where I live, well unfortunately I live in a kingdom far far away ( NZ) so I cant take you down the road to play on the dyno. I will map ( more correctly observe and encourage my wonderful friend and guru )in the next week or so and will update you. Again hopefully the remap will give me the power to pull the new cog and bike et al up the more challenging of hills and wind in 5th. I will keep you informed of the results
@PeakMotorcycles
@PeakMotorcycles 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I’m sure I can find a tuning company locally over here, NZ is a long way to travel for such things and I doubt we’re allowed in yet! 🤣. There was a NZ motorcycle shipping company at the ABR festival, so perhaps I’ll get down there sometime. The gearing on the 300 is a lower 1-5 and higher 6th so the effects you mentioned for the gearing would be even more noticeable with a sprocket change! I can get by with a 10% speedo error, particularly as I generally have my Nav on the bike. It’s good to know that the MotoX is still going after 4 years; there’s plenty of folks who assume that as it’s1/4 to 1/3 the price of an established brand it must therefore be junk. Good luck with your remap.
@PeakMotorcycles
@PeakMotorcycles 3 жыл бұрын
I called a dyno/remap place here (Hilltop Motorcycles) and they said they couldn’t do anything with a CRF300L so no dice there. I did check the bike again and I think there has been a bit of softening if not actual melting, of the corner of my number plate nearest the end of the exhaust. That said, it’s a very thin flexi-plate, so perhaps if I stuck with a proper one it wouldn’t matter.

Any performance improvement would be a bonus but not a show stopper. I'd also thought about a 550 mod for more precise low throttle response. However, it's just struck me there might be insurance implications - many companies like any excuse to jack up the premium. Any thoughts?

I went for the Arrow exhaust with a CAT in the end. It was then the only homologated exhaust available. No power increase but it did save a few kg high up on the bike and isn’t loud but has a pleasing sound. To my ear at least! I might have done the 550 ECU. Maybe a touch more top end and a bit smoother low down, but it’s marginal. I have the airbox mods to do, so perhaps after that I’ll see if I can dyno it vs a standard bike just to see.

Depends where you are. If you have a UK/EU bike, then there is no ECU mod. For the rest of the world ECU mods are available, but many ride it with the MotoX as it comes. There are two inserts, one in the end and one between the silencer and link pipe. If you remove these, I expect the back pressure is reduced and without more airflow in and an ECU mod, the bike won’t run right.

Happy to do the test with the baffles out, but it doesn’t save lives and this has been proved and tested several times. If you are relying on loud pipes to save you, also try riding to the conditions and circumstances, as that has a much better chance of keeping you out of hospital. Liking loud pipes is fine, I love to hear and feel loud pipes around a race track, but I don’t want to sit on top of them all day. ‘Know’ is a strong word 🤣. When I bought mine, the V2 wasn’t available and the 3 choices were stainless pipes, alloy silencer. Stainless pipes and titanium/carbon silencer, titanium pipes and titanium/carbon silencer. I think the prices back then were something like £140/£160/£320, so I picked the middle one. In hindsight, the cheapest one would have been better, as the carbon end cap started melting after a few days of riding. I reported it to them but they weren’t interested. I’ve since switched mine out for an Arrow Thunder Titanium with a catalytic converter.
@2wheels.are.better.than4

@@PeakMotorcycles They’ve since added a note for the one you got that states, “Please remove silencer to prevent carbon heat scoring”. 🤷🏼‍♂️ The Moto X exhaust is appealing because I noticed in the description of your Arrow noise test video that the Moto X exhaust is quieter than both the Arrow and stock exhausts, at idle and mid RPM. Most 300L owners here in the US seem to get the Yoshimura exhaust, which I’m sure is great, but it’s just too loud for me. Your videos are great by the way. My video or others? Not sure how you can tell from a video alone as it depends on mic location, gain settings on the preamp and post processing. I’ve done measurements with a noise meter using FIM standard tests and have compared stock with MotoX and with both inserts in, it is quieter than stock at idle, not much it in at 5k rpm and louder above that. I didn’t put it in, as the audience is no more than 20% in any country, and the shipping and tax costs mean that what it costs in one place is significantly different from another. I suggest you look it up on Bikerzbits and select your shipping country to get the total. Then depending on what your local import taxes might be, you may have to add that on. This is the exhaust: bikerzbits.com/honda-crf300l-rally-full-system-exhaust-muffler-231039.html So around £190 + UK shipping (£20) + £10 clearance charges + £40 VAT. Though it seems not everyone gets the import charges, so to the UK, somewhere between £210-£260. Other countries will be different

Hi, no ECU mod. There isn’t one yet for the UK ECU, so I can’t even turn off the fuel cut off thing. Performance difference is minimal if any. @PeakMotorcycles
@PeakMotorcycles 2 жыл бұрын
@@DaveDayve To meet the emissions regulations, when you come off the throttle, the ECU cuts the fuel. This makes it a bit snatchy, especially at low speeds. In the US the ECU can be reprogrammed to not cut the fuel as soon as you come off the throttle, making smoother at low speeds. I think that's what it does, over here, it's not available (yet), but I'm sure someone across the pond can confirm.

Can you tell me what the spark arrest does and is it important to put in
@PeakMotorcycles
@PeakMotorcycles 2 жыл бұрын
I can try, and as it's the internet, I'm sure someone will correct me if I have anything wrong! Essentially it's there to stop any flame or sparks coming out of the end of the exhaust. The pops and bangs that can occur on the overrun are unburned fuel hitting the hot exhaust and igniting. If you're riding in a high fire risk area, you don't want this to start a fire. I think it's more of a thing in the USA where some areas require exhausts to have a spark arrester to be legal. In the UK it's too damp most of the time and not really a thing. The other consideration is that the fueling for the bike is based on certain assumptions about airflow. How much can come in through the filter and how much can be pushed out of the exhaust. To keep the engine running within the ECU parameters, a certain amount of back pressure from the exhaust is required, and the spark arrester contributes to this. If there is insufficient back pressure then it can lead to lean running of the engine. I hope this makes sense, and I'm sure someone will correct or clarify if it doesn't!

anyones else’s bike making a little pop and stalling right after the install? i’ve only had the bike on for about 5 mins with the new pipe but it will make a pop and stall sometimes. just wondering if this is normal or something to be worried about
@PeakMotorcycles
@PeakMotorcycles 2 жыл бұрын
I didn’t have that. Do you have both the spark arrester and baffle installed (the metal funnel with holes in between the link pipe and silencer, and the insert into the end of the exhaust?). A pop is sometimes unburned fuel being pushed into a hot exhaust, so if the ignition is off but there’s a few engine cycles, the fuel and air could be combined, is not ignited and is then pushed out into the exhaust. I expect someone else will know both a better answer and explanation. Something to do with back pressure perhaps. My bike would stall when cold and I didn’t give it much gas before pulling away, but that sounds like a different problem to yours.

Something like that at least. There was a mod for the 250 that added manual adjustment. Or it’s something else!
