Great information! I throw the lead hook differentially depending on how far the opponent is from me. Thumb down when they are very close. Thumb up when they are farther away. The reason is I want to connect with the first two knuckles.

Definitely do not want to bend that wrist. I was prone to doing that for quite some time and those incorrect punches added up to some pretty painful wrists. Took me about a year and a half to get them right again.

Nice video. In re the "european" hook, I once read a piece on the Dutch champion from the 1930s and 40s Bep van Klaveren, the only Dutchman to win gold at the Olypmics, who described after coming to the USA being told to throw the hook with the thumb down and the hand turned with the knuckles parallel to the floor, and promptly hurting his hand. He had been used to throwing the hook with the thumb to the ceiling and the knuckles perpendicular to the floor what you would call "the American" hook. He promptly went back to that! The hook is such a dynamic weapon system I learned from my old instructor peek a boo style boxing from new york Catskills he actually trained up there the technique he taught me was we hooked with the thumb up ,holding a beer mug way . A raised front heel snuff out a cigarette butt way. I always found it hard to get back on defense and I found it difficult to insert the hook into combos like a 2 , 3 , 2 also you put yourself in close range with the thumb up. It has a ton of power this way but it's a little too close for comfort sometimes. I recently seen the Russian way some Russian boxing channel I watch, the guy is great he shows thumb down technique and explaining how it gets around the defense glove and kinda drives the jaw in and down under the ear around the glove. I like the thumb up style but Do not raise the front heel that way you get back on defense faster, seems to be best of both worlds kinda .So many different ways to hook and I've used the check hook alot just about knocked my friends dad out with it he was drunk and already punched me in the cheek orbital area hard and the check hook calmed his ass down really fast he was rushing forward I stepped half a step back and away southpaw stance as always and got him in the temple area knocked his hat off his head he staggered and kinda hugged the wall for a few minutes .I really held back from hurting him it was more of a reaction the check hook lol love the channel gentlemen thank you ❤

Thank you again frank, I’ve been waiting for this video. Lot of wisdom there. What is the advantage of keeping the hands shoulder hight? Since modern boxing encourages to keep your hands on temples. Cheers
@FranksNobleArt3 күн бұрын
@shanecool100 It's a question of your own comfort. I like them at shoulder level because you punch from the shoulder and also you can move your backhand to protect different punched to your face.

What are your thoughts on elbow placement? Most instructors tell you to have a 90 degree elbow in front of the eye. I notice yours is more pointing down.
@FranksNobleArt2 күн бұрын
I take the view that the boxer has to feel comfortable in what he's doing, so long as the punch connects with the knuckle part of the glove. Dind you're style. Good luck.

when opponent comes forward, why not step out of the line at same time as the hook is thrown?
@FranksNobleArt3 күн бұрын
Yes, you can do that.

Wrong, incomplete and misleading teachings. Will I ever see someone on KZbin explaining how to hook? I might do it myself but not for free
