I used to train this kick so much on a pillar wrapped with rope during my teens. It's one of those perfect unexpected kicks your can catch people off guard, since most people are used to roundhouse and front kicks - and that was exactly the reason why I trained it

for me it always looked like I was about to throw a sidekick so I got a lot of use out of it, back in the day

I think this is a useful but underestimated kick, specially against a trained fighter. Also, that's a good way to train it.

Thank you for explaining so lucidly. Never paid attention to the word "ura" despite practicing a lot of urakens and uramawashis. The step -by- step explanation is super helpful and can be a great way to self-learn. Thanks brother Jesse for your superb videos.

Hey I really enjoy your how to improve videos. I've been practicing kenpo and jiu-jitsu since I was 6 and very recently I was diagnosed with a softball sized brain tumor that took 4 brain surgeries to remove and even still I need radiation therapy sessions. In doing so I was living in the hospital for 4 months and learned that many things that i used to do would have been forgotten. Things like auto racing, playing the piano and martial arts are taking a very long time to relearn. Your how to vids are helping me regain my old self again. Thank you.

Excellent drill Sensei, I like the concept of teaching them on the floor first. One drill I loved when training was my instructor taught us how to do the spinning hook kick by standing in a doorway (To prevent it from turning into a wheel kick or elongating the path of travel). If you use the right mechanics, you should be able to spin in a doorway, snap the hook kick out and retract it back to your fighting stance without touching the frame. It REALLY made us aware of our technique!!

I don't know if you noticed, but Bill Wallace would chamber his left (front) knee the same to not reveal whether the kick was a hook, side, or roundhouse kick. Without a rotation, the power of his kicks depended on speed, a 'bump' of the hips, and usually forward motion. Also, I have read discussions on position changes in kata based on rotation near one's heel, but a rotation into a kick should be on the ball of the foot. If your toes are then pointed in the opposite direction of your target you don't even have your heel on the ground that moment. Admittedly, performing a kick even slightly slower than it should be needs the heel down for support.

Very great tutorial! I love the floor drill. It makes you focus on the form of the kick. I like to throw a hard side kick off center to my opponent and snap it back along that line you mentioned to increase speed!

I love how the exercise lying on the side helps you feel the right muscles working for the kick without any confusion with the muscles keeping you upright. Is that what they call “muscle activation “?

My favorite offensive weapon: That the opponent does not see it coming from the direction of the back of his head gives it an element of surprise. But be aware that your back is exposed during the kick so your attack needs to be fully committed.

Love it yea a cool thing to try too is to set up maybe a plastic bottle Bc it’s light and do the kick but using the BALL of your foot to hook kick so for this if done correctly the bottle should come back toward your kicking side not out to the side. 🙂

Hi Jesse, Very nice tutorial! I am a second degree black belt but this was not one of my specialties. I notice now after training a while i can get more power in my kick already! I only have 1 question: I have a bit trouble with lifting the knee up first. In theory it sounds good and it helps to develop the strength and proper way to generate power in your kick but when performing the kick at full speed i tend to not fully lift my knee up first but do it more fluently like a swing. Is this ok? It feels ok, while the kick becomes less fluent when I Lift my knee up first. Hope to hear from you! Also an idea: can you give a tutorial explaining the proper technique of doing this kick in a full spin?
