Hey team, some helpful tips. Randy's right about the guide requirements, it's just the animals that might kill you or you might kill yourself getting to. For the hunting, A TON of these hunts can be accessed by flying into Anchorage/Fairbanks and renting a car and just driving to wherever you're tag is, especially the OTC tags. I'm a resident, but I've even gone as far as renting a U-Haul and just sleeping in it out in remote areas. If you're looking to get flown in, you should expect that it's going to cost somewhere around $2k round-trip on top of whatever flight costs you have. They're really tight on weight! So don't bring too much fluff and you should be fine. It usually is around 125 lb of gear per person. If you're looking to ship your meat back out, Alaska Airlines has Air Cargo that's super reasonable, and if you fly Alaska Airlines flights, you get a deal on the freight, they have huge freezers, and deal with this kind of stuff all the time. I've shot two moose from draw tags on the road system (literally where we shot them: 63°37'12.1"N 148°41'03.9"W) and walked in/out to a rental car we got in Fairbanks that sat in the parking lot while we hunted (camped). I guess my final point is that a ton of hunting shows like this make it seem like you have to fly into these hunts, and while your success rate might be higher there, and it makes for better videos, if you're willing to put in the time and energy, you can totally hunt Alaska from the road system. If you're going to hunt bigger game (like moose) I would recommend bringing some friends with you on the hunt to help. So many people want to come hunt Alaska, even if they're just along for the ride, and it's a great experience! There are a bunch of public use cabins that you could rent too, some are from Alaska DNR and some are Forest Service: dnr.alaska.gov/parks/aspcabins/index.htm www.recreation.gov/search?inventory_type=camping Good luck everyone who put in for the draw tags, they announce the winners right around Valentines Day!!!

Thank you for the insights from a local’s perspective. I’m researching a possible hunt or fishing trip to Alaska this year if my work schedule permits. I’m thinking of taking the Alaska Marine Highway ferry from Washington to either Whittier or Juneau. So your advice and this video are a big help.

Sadly, people like me will never be able to afford to hunt Alaska, non-resident Alien require a guide😢 but I might get to fish there one day.

Even us Alaska residents are getting priced out because nonresidents are driving the demand for flights/outfitters.

You don’t need a guide for all the hunts in Alaska. There’s still a few hunts out can DIY!

Just looked at it again and it was just confusing that in 1 column it said no but in another it did. I just didn't look at it very carefully. Thanks for the info. Definitely a bucket list trip.

Hunting Alaska is awesome or at least it used to be (have not hunted it in 20 years). Yes tags are fairly reasonable but as you mention it can be a logistical nightmare and pretty much everything is fly out which is expensive. One example of something to watch out for is fuel (propane, white gas, etc.) these cannot be transported on a public charter flight but can be transported on a privately chartered flight so be careful. And unless you are gonna spend a week driving to AK or paying big $$ to check 5-8 bags youll have to rent a lot of gear, not to mention getting your meat home. For a fun hunt id recommend Sitka Blacktail on Kodiak Island. You can get multiple tags typically so its not bang and your hunt is over.

So I just went onto the Alaska website and it is saying to hunt anything as a non resident you have to have a guide?????????

That is absolutely incorrect unless you are NON-RESIDENT ALIEN. I would encourage you to go back and invest in some more time and effort to thoroughly read all the requirements for NON - RESIDENT hunters in Alaska if that is the category that describes your situation. www.adfg.alaska.gov/index.cfm?adfg=huntlicense.guiding

Straight from Alaska Department of Fish and Game website: "A nonresident who hunts brown/grizzly bear, Dall sheep, or mountain goat must be personally accompanied by an Alaska-licensed guide OR by an Alaska resident 19 years of age or older who is within the "second degree of kindred" (see definitions below)." So no, you don't have to have a guide, not for everything, only for those species listed, unless you're talking about being a non-resident from another country, then yes, for any big game you need a guide.
