How to spearfish Wahoo. Want to spear a fish that will make you scream WAHOO! Adreno's Wayne Judge and Dr Who himself (Ian Shields) talk about hunting a prize pelagic Wahoo; how to do it, when to do it, where to do it.
Wahoo are as beautiful on the plate as they are in the ocean, but beware, this fish can bite back.
The Wahoo is one of the most difficult fish to catch. With high power, speed and a cautious nature they are guaranteed to test your gear and experience. If you aren’t packing some quality equipment which has been maintained, they will make the most of it. This is where the accuracy of your shot comes in, because this will be key in making or breaking the catch. Shooting behind or into the head will give you a good chance of holding or stoning the fish. Your experience and technique are important in judging when to take your shot.
The normal shaft set up is sufficient, or a breakaway for when you need to fend of sharks. Larger guns around 1.4m are generally best as they provide the power needed. A standard set up with a 25m float line and large buoy is best for shooting wahoo, especially for when they initially make a run. This provides better success in landing the fish and better safety.
Open water situations such as in the coral sea of the coast of Australia can provide conditions for schools of wahoo. It’s best to try for wahoo in quieter boating periods when the fish haven’t been scared away in around 25m of water around reefs and other structures. But always remember, where there’s fish there’s more fish.
Always take your time with wahoo, they are easily scared and need to become curious and comfortable with you for you to get the opportunity for a decent shot. When pulling in the fish with the float line, always be sure to swim off to one side to avoid it accumulating nearby in large clumps which can limit your movement and create tangles if the fish runs. Once you pull the fish in, grab the tail and flip the fish to put them to sleep. Once you’ve done this you can dispatch the fish using your dive knife.
Always keep in mind that these pelagic fish are strong and dangerous, with sharp teeth that can easily inflict damage. When you put a spear and a knife into the mix, it’s imperative that you take care to catch the fish properly.
Good luck out there, we hope you’re able to land your own wahoo soon!

Lots of great advice here to land wahoo. One thing I would add is get another shot into a large fish as soon as possible before going for the grab. I have had many heart breaking moments losing fish at that last moment when they give a last flick and some thing tears or the flopper closes and they sink off…..

Amazing tips as a virgin spearo who just bought my first gun and as a US Marine who has mastered every shooting method to take this knowledge to my first under water setup is exciting as hell!!! Can’t wait to try all the amazing methods your team has posted on YT!!!! Absolutely makes sense, gives pertinent information, and also is clear and consistent with the type of fishing those of us not as experienced can understand and actually put in action easily and safely. The fact you seam to push safety over excitement is also a huge plus in my opinion as a virgin spear fisher and free diver but having come from a background of national competitive swimmer as well as a Military combat swim instructor makes these videos even better!!!!

Wayne & Ian, Top quality advice on pelagic technique. Hoping to dive your area sooner than later. If you could translate the term " Pressure Point" for us Yanks it would be much appreciated? Are you talking about, Tidal, Barometric or Current Pressure, such as that against a seamount? Thx. David Weiss, Tampa, FL.

It's not something we've had the pleaseure of having to encounter when in the water, thankfully. But from stories we have heard, they are best treated with the utttmost respect and give them a very wide berth!
