Learning to indentify steel is useful even if you buy high carbon steel, cause sometimes you need to know if the quality of what you buy is good, i saw a lot of knifemakers use bought steel that cracks after quenching, even after a lot of works. Than if you want to use scrap steel like me then you need to know what are you using

True words, now they use hardenable steel only for the edges to make it cheaper, is becoming always more difficult to use scrap steel to make knives

Other than buying premium ground O1 steel, what's a good place to get high carbon scrap or re-use of cheaper items? I guess rebar is always mild steel?

Rebar could be hardenable, but it must be tested and the time required to do it is too much to be profitable. Leaf springs could be very good high carbon steel, it also must be tested but it is more common than rebar. I have an iveco leaf spring 1 inch thick that harden like O1. Usually older car's lesf springs are higher quality steels

Will old wrought iron throw sparks? Can wrought iron be turned into carbon steel in a simple forge?
@Gabrulo_knifemaking
@Gabrulo_knifemaking 4 жыл бұрын
Actually any steel can be turned in carbon steel by carburization, but it is easier to buy 01 steel or other kind of carbon steel

Nooooooooooooo😅😅😅😅 that's really unfortunate! Always test the steel before using it, even if is bought steel, is the best way to avoid this problems

I found a rusty japanese knife without a handle. It looks like a carbon steel but how can i test without breaking it?

@@jhonholst344 if it's Japanese and it's old I'd bet my bottom dollar it's high carbon. The Japanese take bladesmithing very serious. Also check with a file maybe on the tang side where it can be covered after
