This past week at the hospital, I overheard one of the nurses ask the lady at the nursing station to call the nurse aide because my patient needed her diaper changed (diarrhea). As the lady was calling her, I stepped in and told her I could do it. After saying yes, and I was walking to my patients room, I thought, OMG what did I get myself into... So holding the supplies in my hand and kind of looking bug eyed, two of my classmates offered to help because we all had the same idea in mind..we wanted to learn! AND BOY DID WE LEARN! I take any opportunity I can to be hands on in the hospital. And honestly, after all was said and done, we left the room knowing we made a difference to that patient... and thats what makes any task, big or small, worth it.

I feel like majority of the preceptors Ive had so far dont care about teaching the students. I felt ignored and ended up not having the opportunity to do anything hands on, even when I said that my goal for that day was to give an injection, etc. I have had one really awesome preceptor who went out of her way to help me reach my goals for the day and she taught me things. Most of the time I dont really know what questions to ask, so it is helpful when the preceptor tells me what she is doing, why, and lets me do some of those things and be involved.

Thank you for this video and advice! I'm down to the final wire in my LPN program (3 months left) and we're hitting practicum soon. During the last clinical I was asked what were my goals for the day and I didn't have an answer! Not that I didn't know what I wanted to do (which was gain triage experience and rapid assessment experience since I was in the ED) but I for some reason couldn't verbalize that to the nurse.

Thanks so much these are some great tips. This is my second semester in clinical's and we are able to do a lot more than we were last semester like pass meds, give IM's, and insert foleys. I love clinical because it's so interesting, but a lot of times I'm not sure if I'm helping or in the way. I'm still getting used to the atmosphere since we have only had one out of seven clincials for the semester, but I wasn't sure if this is normal to be feeling, or if I should be asking if I can do things ahead for her/him?

any clue on how to get nurses to acknowledge students during report? I have actually had nurses turn their back to me while taking report, after introducing myself quickly and saying something like "hi, I'm Megan. I'll be helping with room 24 today, do u mind if I listen in on report?" maybe they don't want students or are having a bad day, but it's my experience that many don't want to give us much courtesy...if any at all. It really bothers me because I don't treat other people that way and don't plan on starting now. any tips on maybe being a bit more assertive (not aggressive)?
