HOW TO! Improve Deep Scratches Through The Clear Coat (Auto) Polish? Wet Sand?

In this video, I demonstrate the best and safest way to remove scratches from the clear coat of your car, truck, or motorcycle. Generally speaking, when we talk about wet sanding an buffing in the automotive environment, we are looking to get the absolutely best shine out of the paint finish on a car or truck. We are looking to get a true show car finish. Wet sanding is a process where we use special sandpaper that is supposed to be wet with water. Very wet. The water acts like a lubricant plus helps remove tiny particles so that the sandpaper does not get clogged and create deep scratches. Granted, the act of sanding does create small scratches. However we use finer and finer grits of sandpaper to make those scratches smaller and smaller as we get the finish as flat as possible.

BTW… 3000 grit is where I started. If needed..2k grit. But that is as aggressive as I go on clear coat. Scratches through the clear can only be COMPLETELY repaired by sanding off…and re spraying unfortunately. The purpose of the video is to get improvement…without a re spray. Cheers!😁👍🏻

Hey Brain I had a situation about to two years ago, someone place a bag on top of the front of the hood not only it left a deep gauch but also scratches in the direction thru pull it from. Like you said I started with the less aggressive and to my surprise it came out really good except for the deep gauch. But like you said only if you at the right angle that you can see it, thank you Brain for all do abs teach us.

Good video Brian, healing up from total HIP replacement surgery, but this will come into play this spring, as I have a 2016 Black Metallic pearl Ram, to try and fix the hood and front fenders, as a springer Spaniel was ice skating on the whole area, and the roof, then took a nap on the roof. Will be very challenging.JP in SD😎👍

Excellent as always, truthfully I expected a little more clear to be missing. I wet sand on occasion but have increased my use of this since studying your results and monitoring my own work and measurements. I hope you’d agree to the newbies like I was, practice on a salvaged panel and then carefully monitor your early work as you go, to get a good “ feel” for what your doing or removing. Then it becomes a routine, but always follow a strict work protocol so as to not do damage or go to far.

Brian is old school. He still uses regular clay and not a clay mitt. I like to use regular clay myself. This is a great video on sanding. What grit do you recommend? You did not mention what grit you used. In many of the forums people mention a bunch of different grits and two or three that they use at one time.

Great video. I had a question though about how do I protect the panel after doing this as the scratch is thru the clear coat in this section? Is it just keep it clear and wax with carnauba often, or somewhere I saw that i should use one of the ceramic coatings? thank you @apexdetail85

*9:00** A bit confused. The 130-140°F my clear coat gets to in the sun is ok, but buffer, not ok?* Before you mention "evenness" of the sun... My sun doesn't magically turn on. It rises. It dapples through trees and slowly inches across my car, causing the exact same temperature differential (but much, much greater) as the buffer. Going to have to prove there is a variance to a scientist.

With RTU prep spays like Gyeons or NV, is there any truth to them causing swelling of the pain? If so how long after using the prep should we wait to ensure if any swelling does occur it’s gone? Another excellent vid! Thank you!

Yes… alcohol or solvents in these prep can cause swelling. However… if you wait a few short minutes for the temps to drop to normal.. you will be fine.

Not sure the concern about clearcoat temperature is really justified. Sitting in the sun in even a moderately warm country that panel is going to get way over 200 degrees, too hot to touch many days. And it's just fine. I just don't belive polishing generates a worrysome amount of heat.

Has anyone heard the term "sliding paint"? I've only heard 2 people use that term and I wanna know is it/was it a thing? The one person that mentioned it talked as if the paint could be completely moved over a scratch to COMPLETELY fill it in so no matter the angle or light, the area would PERFECT as if it was repainted. Seems too unbelievable to me. Just wondering if there was any truth to this. Thanks

In a sunny day the temperature rises at the same time , slowly, on the entire car ,and then at evening slowly cooling down again on the entire car, not in a specific 2x2 area as 2-3 minutes of heavy polishing witch can increase the temperature rapidly in seconds . Common sense
