My real life flying career started with a crosswind landing and ended with a crosswind landing... On my first solo I kinda flipped my tail dragger over, well at least I got the propeller pointing into the grass basically due to being blown of the rwy. And on my very last landing I was very rusty - I had an instructor with me - and started using crossed controls as if the wind was coming from my right instead of from my left. I adjusted and did land safely but was absolutely furioius with myself. I realized either I think of my wife and kids and quit all together, or I start putting in seriously more hours. I stopped flying.

Sorry to hear that, it must be a sad feeling to end your career with a landing like that. I agree though, you need to make a decision when you just don't have the time to maintain the level of proficiency needed and if any doubt exists there can only be one.

Boy, did I need this lesson after 2 hard landings this past week at KMDW where the winds have been non-stop for weeks. Wind vectors of 30 @ 14 or greater with gusts in the 20's. Thanks E, I really needed this as a refresher. Back to FSI Panel for more practice.

There is the sound bug with the touchdown 11:27 onwards... the thrust reduces, and even though all wheels are firmly on the floor by this point the sound for nose-wheel touchdown only kicks in once the N1 reduces to like 34%... maybe a bug worth reporting to PMDG.

Thanks for this. I've been having some cross wind landings and I noticed I've been landing on one wheel then the other. Applying aileron should help with this.

This is good. I always have trouble after the autopilot disconnect. Before I can find the correct placement with my joystick to continue the angle my autopilot was using I get blown off course. I assume a real 737 yoke doesn't remain at center while autopilot is on so a pilot can easily transition to manual flight while keeping the nose pointing in the same direction
@A330Driver
@A330Driver 2 жыл бұрын
There shouldn't be any continuous movement of the yoke with the AP on, it should more or less be centered around the trimmed position. The plane is never perfectly trimmed, but usually doesn't need too much of an input to stay stable.

You make it look a lot easier than it really is. I havent had many opportunities as I usually only fly real world weather. I usually overcompensate on these type landings. I wonder what my controller settings have to do with this? I'm not really that well versed in calibration and null zones. I have fsuipc7 in msfs but I haven't used it to manipulate anything.

@737ng driver Excellent tutorial as always. I find the sensitivity of yoke and rudder is inconsistent. For example stock MSFS aircraft a light touch on elevator puts me into 40 degree pitch, crazy. I've messed around with settings until brain goes numb. To me there's no sensitivity setting which works across all aircraft. I only fly PMDG 737 now and configured settings to work best with that but... That said on the 737 I had crosswind landing at TNCM at 27 knots. Way too early on flare.. then ended up with full right rudder and full left aieron to line it up. Surely that's not right either! Although it was hilarious not sure if anyone else has issues with getting sensitivities correct. Would be interesting if you could share settings? Or do I need to buy some more decent kit?

What is the box on the Navigation display at the landing in LEPA called? It looks like it is displaying the VNAV path and glideslope. It looks cool and wanted to ask how I can use it in the sim.

You mean the Vertical Situation Display (VSD) I guess. Press the CTR button twice (from normal map mode) on the EFIS CP to bring it up.

Thanks so much for the additional context, crosswind landings definitely one of the biggest challenges to your every day simmer. May I ask about rudder sensitivity? I know that rudder pedals are different for every system, but can you tell me approx how much (if at all) you have reduced your rudder sensitivity for the pmdg in msfs? The slightest input on mine seems to send the aircraft off one way verrrryyy abruptly...
@A330Driver
@A330Driver 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Sam, I'm using default sensitivity, no changes done. The rudder is a very strong tool in the 737, you need to treat it carefully. Just like in the real plane.

Thank you for this video, most helpful. When you are manually flying the final approach and are in the crab are you supposed to maintain this with Aileron & rudder inputs or just aileron input ? I always seem to drift when there is a crosswind component. I understand using rudder & opposite aileron input to get yourself lined up with the centre line when touching down, it is the final phase of the approach before de crabbing I struggle a bit with.
@A330Driver
@A330Driver 2 жыл бұрын
For the crab you shouldn't need either aileron or rudder. Only if you need to correct for disturbances (turbulence, etc) you would apply corrections. Use only the aileron for those, the rudder is literally only used to decrab on takeoff/landing and in case of engine failure on any jet airliner.

I guess you could apply "dry technique" on wet runways but it would pointless as it's "easier" to decrab the airplane after touchdown
@A330Driver
@A330Driver 2 жыл бұрын
Your tires will have less grip making it easier to slide of the runway. Not recommended doing so.

I don't fly the PMDG, however, suppose I'm landing into a single Rwy, that is Rwy18. The ATIS reported winds from 090 at 25 gusting to 35, what winds magnitude should I enter into the FMC, 25 or 35? Thanks and best regards Emmanurl.
@A330Driver
@A330Driver 2 жыл бұрын
In the 737 you don't need to put any wind in for landing. For the performance tool on the EFB you'd use the one with the most limiting conditions, so either the least headwind or the strongest tailwind. For determination of the cross wind component use the strongest wind, including gusts.

Thanks for this tutorial. Is there any limit on maximum touchdown rate even in normal conditions?
@A330Driver
@A330Driver 2 жыл бұрын
We don't measure rate, but g loading, in real life. Thus I can't give an answer. If you want some ballpark figures, from 300fpm pax will complain, 500 is no problem for the plane, up to 1000 will take an inspection, more than 1000 and you'll probably buy a new plane. The famous video of the 727 crash in the desert was 1500.

5:33.. at touchdown more than half the crab angle was still there (which is precisely why the airplane lost the centerline).. that’s not the correct de-crab technique (also called “half loser technique”). The “Landing with crab” technique is called the “Full loser technique”. Then there is the “Real pilot technique” but off course the “Children of the Magenta line” factory forbids it .. and wisely so.
