Exactly! I do the same, and I just think to myself: ‘Gosh, I hope these people don’t know the dances!’, but it’s super helpful. Sometimes I do too much of a dance mom’s choreography and don’t really improvise... 😅✨

hi! i focus on contemporary but u take ballet as well, ik it can be hard but try taking a private or learning some jazz or contemporary. combos online

What I like doing for that is turn on a song and put your feet in a wide stance and try to improv without moving your feet it helps you work on little things like arms

Contemporary ballet is my go to for improv! I love it sm! Floor work is something to really focus on though

I suggest you learn other completely different dance styles like hip hop, so that you can learn to move freely and feel the song without using technique. Contemporary uses a lot of ballet movements, making it difficult for you to improvise without ballet. Even if you don't like hip hop, those kinds of less technical styles will help you improvise better, have a greater perspective and ultimately, be a more complete dancer :) Give a try

I absolutely LOVE improv but I am super particular with where I do it and what music is being played. If there are bad vibes in the classroom or not my style or groove of music playing it will completely mess it up for me. I have tried really hard to get out of my comfort zone and just do it, but these things still make it so difficult for me. My teacher also gives us zero pointers and just goes IMPROV! I wish sometimes that she would give us a goal for it instead of just yelling it out such as like giving us like a substance or a character or a story. I feel like those pointers help so much. Im auditioning for a K-Pop company and I have to send in a video of me improv dancing…. But I’ve never danced before. I can sing but I can’t dance. I am not really that bad in improv. What freaks me out is that for my exam day we can not use any sort of instrumental or music which I find sooooooooooooooooooo awkward to do. it's like.....the silence is so deafening. It's hard tryna catch a proper rhythm too
