This is the same method we use to teach and show our crew how to install 650 grid for drywall ceilings. We had a comment asking a question about it on another video and thought it would be a good idea to make a video and show how we go about installing it for our own projects. Please let us know if you have any questions or comments!

At 14:00.....Just a quick tip to anyone doing this for the 1st time...to figure out where exactly to cut the new main that will connect...what I do is, with my first main in the whole job what I will do FIRST is measure with a tape measure from the BACK of the wall L where the connecting main will sit to the flange of the main that's suspended.... not the tab but the flange of the suspended main im measuring to here. Make sure your tape it's perpendicular to the wall. Then you cut a full main to that number, making sure your hooking the flange when marking your connecting main, NOT the tab, hook your tape on a new mains flange, pull your measurement, mark and cut.... Keep in mind the tape measures measurement is exactly what the new mains "flange" has to be to be "FULL BEARING" on the wall L....keep in mind that number is tight so give a 8th or so of space so the main will sit nice on the wall L with a 8th or so of space to slide.... not doing could result in the connecting main being too tight and bow the main out which could throw it out of square..and cutting too much off can result in weak support at the wall L...once you cut the piece that will connect, FIRST, BEFORE CONNECTING IT, take the cut piece and butt the tab of the cut piece into the wall L where it will sit just like you did with the tape measure, so the tab of the new cut piece is touching the back of the wall L where it touches the wall, now you can butt up the cut end of the cut main to the main that's suspended and visually check where you have to cut each main from there on out going forward so that every time you finish a main at a wall, it will be full bearing on the wall L...

You’d have to mark it out before drywall.

How did you 27 in for your first main ? Cause you went center of the room and went 2 foot each side and whatever you had from the wall was 27 ?
@mitchellacoustical3119
@mitchellacoustical3119 Жыл бұрын
Yea everything is 2’x4’. So I think the mains laid out at 27” then 48” and then the wall at 27”. It won’t be a normal 2x2 system on the drywall grid. Hope that answers your question.

@@mitchellacoustical3119 okay thank you making sure . Cause Im doing this at my job. My foreman threw me on this 650 grid system so I’m not use to it their system . Cause I always Done it with hard lit studs . I’m still at a high apprentice percentage. Just making sure cause I’m doubting myself a lot

You cut the main wrong you should always have a wire at the end of the main, doesn’t matter what type of grid system.

Bar joists were running perpendicular, and this is just an install video… if I did an 8’ main it wouldn’t show how to connect the mains and that is important for these types of instructionals. Go ahead and make your videos however you like👍

there is one thing I dont get. isnt it logical to run your mains in the shorter dimension? I have noticed it in your other video also (framing 101). you always prefer to run your mains in the longest edge. the only thing I can think of is the mains are supported by tie-hangers and they are attached to the ceiling with no relation to the dimension of edges of the room. but still why do you always prefer to run your mains in the longer dimension?
@mitchellacoustical3119
@mitchellacoustical3119 Жыл бұрын
So there are two thoughts, yes shortest works but also perpendicular to the joists you’re hanging wire from. I also have to take into fact of how to shoot the video and which rooms we can make work. But perpendicular to the joists is the way to go. If that’s the longest run, then that’s what you want to square your mains.
@emredalgic
@emredalgic Жыл бұрын
@@mitchellacoustical3119 okay understood. You are considering to install your mains perpendicular to the joists above so that you will always have a support to attach your tie-hangers. Yes, that makes sense. I have never worked on a structure with joists so I could only figure out now. Thanks for reply.

should have off set your mains just like regular grid so your joints don't in same spot creating a weak spot aren't in the same spot, if this was a bigger room you risk cracking or saging it's a small room but your making this video to teach people that's a mistake

We would have run into the cans and Hvac. We can't cover everything for every scenario - it's a small room so we showed how we would do it for this space specifically

@@mitchellacoustical3119 no wouldn't have ran into HVAC or nothing your mains would still be in same place only difference is where you connect one main to another those joints should always be staggered so if you started from one wall should have started next main from the othere side going opposite way so your main joints don't line up so it interlocks properly not have your joints line up
