To get the external sd card to show up via USB (make sure RP2 isn't connected to your computer) go into settings > apps > go to the top menu and select Show System Apps. Scroll down the list and look for External Storage and Media Storage and clear cache for both of these system apps. Wait a few minutes and plug it in to the computer and from the notification bar choose file transfer for connection instead of charging. You may need to clear data as well instead of just cache for External Storage and Media Storage if it doesn't work the first time. Cache rebuilding does take a while if there are a lot of things in your SD Card. I am currently on 8.1 but I assume this works with 6.0 and 6.1 as well.

Just get my retroid today and updated it with this latest version. Everything went smoothly even tho I thought the "install app" part would take days and it actually took quite a while (a couple hours). But then the installation went just fine so thank you for this step by step tutorial !

I'm going to be doing this via internal storage not sd card so should I remove the sd card, format it, or just leave it in? will all the old files on the sd card affect the system after the update?

I would reccomend taking the sd card out just so the correctly files get pushed through , leaving the sd card in once rebooted the script may read these instead, so keep it removed while you to the new flash sir.

I have an issue. When I plugged switched off RP back after clicking download in Flash Tool, there is no any download progress. On RP screen I see charging battery. I think the problem is that the device by default switched to 'charge only' when you plugging it. Any Ideas? PS: my OS - win 10

so there could be numerous things.. 1. have you download the correct drives needed www.ytechb.com/mt65xx-preloader-driver/ 2. are you using usb2 or usb3 as the rp2 doesnt like usb3 so you may need to run the update on a device pc 3. make sure you have 50percent battery before flashing as this mite cause the problem let me know if this helps :)

I was having trouble with SPFlasher not detecting my device when plugging. I changed the connection options to USB [Fulls Speed and w/battery], then when plugging the retroid I pressed both volume keys and released after connecting. The software was able to flash afterwards

Hey Ari, could you explain what you mean with: USB [Fulls Speed and w/battery]? at least with your trick now the SPflash tool is doing something, only that i goes to a full 100% and then has a 1042 timeout error. Oh well, small steps...

@@jonathandebecker6007 That was happening to me before changing the settings. Inside SPFlasher go to the Options menu (the ones at the top) and select options. On the window that appears, on the left bar pick "Connection". On the USB section pick the options "Full Speed" and "With Battery". Apply/Ok and try again with pressing the buttons.

So I've gotten into a (maybe unwise) battle with a Retroid Pocket (aka Powkiddy/Supretro/Game Pzzy A19)... trying to get it to just use regular Android instead of the horrendous Pandora Game S mini UI it boots to. I've seen talks about the web that I *should* be able to use this guide on my device too. I get to about 1:20 before things go south. The device isn't detected. And no matter what driver I install that doesn't change. I try to install it via device manager and the hardware ID (regardless of whether it's off or on) just reads "USB\CONFIG_DESCRIPTOR_FAILURE"... am I missing something? ... is my problem Windows 11 by chance? I know this is an device that's just adjacent to the device this video is about... but if you've got any insight I'd greatly appreciate it.

@@TheObserver85 I did the flash on my unit last evening. Everything seems to work great. The wifi had improved dramatically, the interface is faster and everything does run more evenly across the various emulators that I have installed. I don't use ANY of the stock emulation software because they're not the pro editions with the various bells and whistles I want in emu so I can't speak to any gains in the stock software. As far as a significant downside, you can no longer format external micro sd storage as internal for device use which IMO represents a significant degradation of device functionality. Call me crazy.

Thanks for the video. Unfortunately, there's no nvdata folder or device_key file on my RP2. ADB return : "adb: error: remote object '/nvdata/device_key' does not exist". There's so little pertinent info on this device. Like for instance what's a device_key on a supposedly open device ? Also nothing seems official, you grab files from random places, the changelog doesn't look like one, there's no announcement. I can't really tell who's working on this update, is this the Retroid Team or some random people from the community ?

This is an offical release, if you havent got a key you need to reach out to the retroid team and they will be able to sort this to register the device. The Folder is more condense to give you what you need.

If it can save someone some time : 1. enter the retroid system. 2. long press home button to the main setting 3. move the cursor to the first option 4. press six times of the zl button 5. It will show the QR code Then... then, wait to spot someone on the livechat cause you can't do anything alone on your side. And that's where me and @David2TheMaX (probably) are waiting for :-) Also, quite important, Retroid Team told me this : We recommend that you continue to use android 6.0 So, in the end, I think I'm not gonna upgrade right now.

So you need to either install the drives which is in the link and then when you plug the device in when its on. make sure its in transfer mode but charging mode .. thjis casn be down from the drop down menu, hope this helps.

This mite be the reason why I would always recommend that you use a new SD card drag all your files over and continue from there. The SD card which comes with the device is locked

I come with a specific problem here, since this morning, when the retroid goes into standby mode and I to try play it againt it's just stuck on a black screen although I can hear that I can navigate through the menus. it may have gone into sleep mode have you pushed the power button to take it out of sleep mode. one way to stop this happening is go into setting and turn sleep mode onto 30minutes by default i think its set to like 1 minute. that should solve the issues and once done this just make sure you have enough battery on the device.

@@MoreTechSir That's what I've done indeed, thank you for your answer. I am sorry for I explained myself poorly. It's actually when the retroid goes into sleep mode that I am then unable to take it out of sleep mode, it just lets me with a enlightened black screen while I can hear that i'm able to navigate through the menus with the buttons just without seeing it. I must also say that this problem was resolved for a short time then came back again, I am unable to identify the source of this dysfunctionality but I will keep you informed. Again, thanks for your time, really apreciate it !

This is for internal, if you would like to do external the folder is in the link and all you do is drag the folder on to the sd card and launch the sd card prescript.

​@@MoreTechSir I solved it guys, turn on the device, plug in your device. In the home menu screen, go to the top left charging menu, change from "Charge" to "MTP file transfer." Unplug it, Power off again, hit "Download" on the Flash tool, and plug it in. :) Process will start. :)

On the google doc start by going to Stock Firmware > 8.1 folder > 8.1v3 Folder > 1.8.1 v3 Update files > Download "RP2-8.1.v3.zip" then back out of that folder into, 2. Stock Apps > Download "Stock Apps 8.1v2 Internal with guide". Go all the way back into the start of Google Doc again into Stock firmware > "START HERE: Prerequisites and Guide" > download both "RP2 Keybackup tools" and "SPflash". Then just follow this guide exactly. Hopefully this helped!

Google play store is deactived by default so you need to active this in toolbox. for dratic you will have to buy this on the play store.You can download cores from retroarch in the device its self.

So have you downloaded the USB Mt's drive files? This may happen if you have a significant low battery. And when you plug the device in you need to click the drop down menu and fins USB options. It will give you the option to transfer files over 😁 let me know if your still struggling.

So you need to make sure the device is switched off the usb is disconnected press download, then re attach the usb and it should start to download. All my device does is go back into charging mode in which the guys over on the Retroid discord forum think that it’s the fact I’m using Parallels for Mac that’s the issue, meaning I’ll have to buy myself a Windows laptop. I’m having issues using Steam on my Retroid as well in which I don’t know if it’s software related.

Since updating to android 8.1 when I long press the Home button to switch between gamepad mode and touch input, it straight away takes me to the home screen. Anyone encountered this problem, or know a fix?

so you need to go into gamepad mode and customize the shortcut key i would reccomend r1 + l1, works well i use this method all the time.

This was very helpful, thank you! One thing that was different for me was that after flashing and turning the RP2 on, I changed immediately to USB file transfer and it started automatically to reinstall the apps. I didn't press anything nor ran anything. This was before I restored the key. Once it was done I restored the key and I checked the RP2 and it had all the apps I had before updating to 8.1, so I didn't run the preinstall script. Is this normal?

Not a problem at all, this happend to me aswell its nothing to worry about were your apps install on the sdcard before? if so that mite be the reason why as its pulled the apps from this. How are you finding the new update?

Thanks for the Video :) I have small problem, i've lost sound in 'mupen64 plus fz' since the update, sound everywhere else is working... any ideas? edit: when you press the volume keys it changes the 'ringer' vol rather than 'media' vol like other emulators.

Fixed it :D didn't do a full uninstall of the emulator the first time, uninstalled, reinstalled & back working

@@controller-man-dan5676 so have you tried to connect the cable after you press update.. With the firmware it was very hit and miss, with what cable you used and if you were on a pc or Mac. If your going through usb3 it won't pick it up you made need an adaptor to usb2

@@MoreTechSir yep but i think you just found out why as my pc only has usb3.0 ports and have no access to a pc with 2.0 ports. But 3.0 is backwards capable so still should work the joys of tech

@@adv569 it maybe that the device needs to be verifed by retroid again so they can give you access to the markplace and os. if you contact them they will be able to help you out with this, i dont really use there os as i just dont like it.

@@MoreTechSir I asked them directly by email f they recommended moving to 8.1. It is certainly allowed, but not necessarily highly recommended yet. Maybe it's a matter of rounding off corners here and there, I don't know. Anyway, since online chat is never active, I can't get my Device_Key QR-Code validated (we need to be both online to do this apparently), so even if I wanted to update, I won't be able to. No big deal.

When I get to the flash part, I choose all the files, click FORMAT ALL + DOWNLOAD, then I plug my OFF RP2 back into my computer. The computer makes a sound like it has detected a device via USB, then it makes the sound like the device has disconnected. This happens when the charging battery icon appears on the RP2 screen. The flash program does NOTHING at this stage, no progress bar or anything. I have installed the USB Driver (it claims it was already installed when I click the Install button on the driver installer program) What's the fucking deal, I'm so frustrated, I just wanted to play some retro games on my neat little handheld and turns out it's a user experience fucking nightmare.
